As a result you can find ancient Mayan artifacts hidden within many of the caves here in Belize and elsewhere. . The character is from the Mayan hummingbird myth /Sun and Moon myth, where a red-headed vulture named Malka'an had convinced the moon goddess at the riverside to become the wife of the vulture king and carries her to the nation of vultures. In my personal story, Malka'an is a cunning, insidious and tactic female red-headed vulture spirit—precisely, A hybrid of a red headed vulture (her father) and a black vulture (her mother) but she inherit more features from red- headed vultures—appear with an intimidating yet elegant demeanor. she’s a member of the Nation of Vultures (a hegemonic lineage in Xibalba), unlike deers, owls and other creatures who needs to be convert into human-like form by gods or elves, vultures are the evil spirits who can transform themselves into humanoid form by utilising black sorcery yet preserved wings, talons and some feathers scattered on their body. I have the intention of adding more character connections to Maus Ajcuink (the vulture king! The true male protagonist alongside Xquic) in order to make different figures more holistic, therefore I made her the mother of Maus Ajcuink and the twin sister of Xic (originated from a lord of Xibalba mentioned in Popol Vuh, name translate as “Wings” especially wings of falcons). And, well, YES she killed her husband who‘s named Xyuvail So‘sol in the story. Considering the name Malka‘an means “widow”. Day 9 was full of exploration in the old city of Merida. We began with a trip to the local city market. Which was HUGE. Easily the biggest market I've ever seen. Bigger then anything in Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines, Croatia and Canada. Massive. 3 floors in 2 buildings that seemed to go on forever. Got some tasty pastor tacos for 20 pesos and had to take a picture of the giant stack a meat the cook was tending. Again bigger then anything I've seen in the past. Amazing really. After the market we went to a museum thst contained much of the artifacts from one of the temple site we had recently visited, Ek Balam. Was really cool to see pictures of the excavation and restoration of the site. Along with some beautiful crafted jewelry, architectural stonework and pottery. This trip has been nothing short of amazing when it comes to learning more about the Mayan and what has been left behind from thier ancestors. Even the old churches here are a thing of amazing beauty and testament the craftsmanship held here. Our day ended with an other round of delicious pastors tacos from the local hunt. I have been participating in the #yaleuniversity #peabody #museum teacher leadership program for two years. I wanted to share the last artifact we reviewed together. The program is on break during summers. The program highlights a variety of teaching methods, but what is most important is 'looking'. It's been absolutely amazing, and we work with the #peabody collection. The piece here was presented to us who are comprised of arts administrators, artists, teaching artists, and current Yale students. We look at items together. This particular practice is Look, Learn, Wonder. This is a #mayan #artifact, and it was my first time seeing the color #mayablue. Maya blue is a unique bright #azure #blue #pigment . As you see here it has been dated so the color is faint. I study these objects and then try to recreate the tones and textures in my studio. This is how we learn by looking, observing, and wondering and doing a lot of research. For those of you who graduated this year, it's only the beginning. La legendaria ciudad maya de Chichén Itzá, Patrimonio de la Humanidad declarada por la UNESCO desde 1988 y Maravilla del Mundo desde 2007, sobresalió como centro cultural y político de la vieja civilización maya y fue uno de los asentamientos más extensos del centro-norte de la península de Yucatán. En su época de mayor esplendor, fue la ciudad más poderosa de la península de Yucatán. . 2021. Entramos a la ciudad y decidimos no contratar a un guía. Quisimos estar "solos" [entre cientos de guías y turistas]. Caminamos hacia la pirámide principal, contemplamos su belleza, su magnificencia, su esplendor. Después de unos momentos, encontramos sombra bajo un árbol justo en frente de la pirámide, "de aquí somos". Nos plantamos bajo la sombra y observamos. . Observamos desde la infraestructura prehispánica y la vegetación que la rodea, hasta los cientos de diversos turistas y guías que se paseaban y hacían su trabajo. Nosotros, por otro lado, no teníamos prisa. Cuando quisimos, nos paramos y seguimos caminando, platicando, divagando e imaginando esos tiempos.
