I’ve never been one to fit in. It isn’t always an easy path. It can be lonely too. In the past, desperate to belong and be accepted, I tried to reshape myself, carving away the parts of me judged strange and unacceptable. I always felt a little sympathetic towards the ugly stepsisters in Cinderella, forced to cut off their toes and heels by their mother, cramming their bleeding feet into glass shoes that were never made to fit them. I knew that pain, those wounds, that desperation. And no matter how much I bent and distorted myself, I could never get it right. So in the end, I stopped. Stopped hiding, stopped forcing my body and mind into shapes that other people found most palatable. Stopped caring what my equivalent of Cinderella’s step mother thought or wanted. If people could only love me when I was not myself, did they really love me at all? And on that lonely path of being yourself, courageous and unflinching, you do find other folk who see you and smile, who share your weird ways and celebrate your oddities. Your strangeness is your beauty. Your uniqueness is your strength. Have the courage to embrace them, dear heart, because you are already wonderful just the way you are. Bring her into your creative space with flowers or ornaments to represent her.” My Goddess has always be Blodeuwedd - A Goddess and character from the Mabinogion who was created from the flowers of oak, broom and meadowsweet and turned into an owl. Her devotional is one I keep by my bedside, and her message of struggle, perseverance and beauty is one I hold dear. The weather is so volatile in March here. The predicted blizzard fell short of expectations and today is cold, wet, and grey. The remaining snow from a few days ago is melting steadily but it’s still too soon to tell if this will be the last of the snow. Final frost date is May 15; it’s also far too soon to think about any sort of gardening or soil related activity yet. But… I’m thinking about flowers today. The moon is waning. The earth’s shadow creeps across that pale face, casting darkness over the land. I can feel the coming dark moon, each night moving closer to that point of still black. Full moons are too bright for me, moonbeams shining through the curtains, disturbing my sleep. It is all too light, too busy, too stimulating. I like the darkness. In the city, it is too hard to see the stars. The electric lights are too bright. Light pollution, it is called. Sometimes you need a little darkness to see more clearly, to see things as they really are. As the moon’s white crescent slips away and the shadow grows, the nights become strange and still. These waning nights are time to see odd things abroad. Wandering hares that might be witches wearing a furry skin. Bat winged shapes cut out against the stars. Dreams turn richer, full of jewel colours and otherworldly messages. Enjoy this waning moon, and the coming darkness. May it bring you strange and wondrous delights. There is something about recognizing the world as alive with spirits, recognizing that these spirits are generally benign and just doing their thing, that helps make things click on a deeper level. It is as if a switch gets thrown within your head and suddenly—witchcraft things—just make more sense. You see and feel the energy currents swirling about you more easily. Your magick becomes more potent. Your confidence in your abilities multiplies. The old folk tales begin to speak to you on another level and you hear the whispers on the wind. You hear the moonlight as it passes through the canopy and meets the forest floor. You feel the turning of the seasons within your bones. I heard y'all like books? 👀 In many ways, this book is a handbook for inscendence—for sinking oneself deeper into the land, into physicality, into the wonder that is life and living—and for building deep relationships with the many spirits with whom we share this world. It is a means of support while working to actively peel back the layers of overculture (meaning the dominant culture in a society) influence that keep us searching for connection yet unable to find and hold onto it. It is a source of guidance to discover the layering of spirit world and physical world, how that same layering is present within us, and how embracing the existence of that layering can help us to discover wholeness within the land and ourselves. A path is a perfect metaphor, in my opinion, for life. For witchcraft too- that crooked path that is so often spoken of. My life path certainly hasn’t been a smooth, well lit journey, dipping into strange shadows and turns. I have thought I would move in one direction, only to find myself wandering in the other, further and further into unexpected places. It is nice to have a planned destination, a rough map that points you where you want to go. It just doesn’t always happen, though, and soon you are off the map, off the explored ways and into shadowy tracks. I do like those odd detours, those wandering ways that see few feet. The places that lead you onwards, and somehow inwards, learning, changing, suddenly realising that where that map was taking you isn’t where you even want to go anymore. Life, and the craft, is a path walked, not a journey plotted and planned. It is a path of wonders, and a path that changes as you too change upon it. What do you think trees would tell us, if we stopped and asked their thoughts? They might speak of the beauty and power that comes from being deep rooted, sunk down into the earth, entangled and interwoven with mycelium. Of drinking from waters rich with earth, taking up wisdom older than the very stones. The trees might offer sympathy to humans, having never felt the play of wind through dancing branches, or the sweet satisfaction of flower buds bursting open. Or they might grieve that humans never see the world as trees do, and so destroy and desecrate the land. I would love to sit among the exposed roots of an ancient oak, to hear the tales of a long, arboreal life. The triumph of season after season of acorns. The rhythm of light and dark, summer and winter endlessly unfolding. To press my fragile, flesh and bone hands to the thick, scarred bark and wonder at the wood beneath. To breathe in the air the tree breathes out, and for a moment be connected and be contented to hear the words of a wise, old tree. I’ve never known a November that wasn’t full to bursting. As a child, the shift from vibrant oranges & yellows filling the landscape to deep & dank browns marked the beginning of winter. The fields would lay barren but for a good cover of manure, waiting for the snow. The garden would be canned up, the apple trees & grape vine bare & sleepy. Focus shifted from working the soil to getting through winter. Now time would be spent in the forest, gathering wood for fires & deer meat for freezers. A warm, or at least dry, day would be spent culling the flock of chickens, harvesting the beefer fattened all year long. There’s an inescapable busyness that fills this time of year. And while this year saw me unable to hunt, due to health junk & small children, there has been no shortage of activities that require my attention yet bring benefit to more than just myself. I’m getting extra rambly with what is supposed to be a “hey, long time no post” type post, a quick post to drop some updates & an excuse to get yet another cup of caffeinated magic onto my grid. Sooo… updates: ●final edits on my upcoming book get turned in this week. But holding to the idea that we can be wild—that we can compare our lifestyles and declare similarity to the very real and very wild animals and spirits that roam the land—while sitting comfortably in our climate controlled homes wearing mass produced clothing and living off of food that we have no idea what it’s made of nor where it came from only serves to reinforce the severe disconnection between us and the natural world. In claiming our right to be feral, we must first own this disconnection, seeing how prevalent it is in our lives and the way it influences our actions even when we are trying to act with the utmost sincerity in matters that hold sacredness to us. From there, we can allow the Land to show us firsthand what it means to belong within its borders and how to move freely across that boundary between it and civilization. Some different style captures of last night’s full harvest moon in Aries and the last super moon this year 🌕 I did not manage to catch her in that super close state and orangey glow because I got carried away in discussion with a friend about an upcoming project I will be spilling on this Monday 😏 Yesterday was an average day full of the chaos that comes with a large household and is the one day to run my kids around. So today I will be doing what I feel pulled to instead of forcing it yesterday and I INVITE you to do the same if you didn’t get to be intentional last night or simply want to keep working with this energy 🔥 I was however doing EXACTLY what made sense for rounding out the intention put into motion about 6 months ago during our last new moon in Aries aaaaand my nodal return kicked off over the summer! It rained hard in the night, knocking all but a few of the acorns from the oaks surrounding my house. It's the autumnal equinox, when the acorns usually start falling but this year... is different. I'm pulling rooting acorns out of my garden and raised beds, tossing them into the forest, wishing them luck, and wondering about the coming winter. This whole year has been strange, unusual, different. I chased a deer from the garden this morning. There's plenty for them to browse in the forest, and while the acorns have fallen early (and are smaller), they have been holding closer to the gardens, nibbling away at plants they avoided when there was less to eat. They didn't do this last year. This, too, is different. Bare feet sinking through rain battered, acorn seeded, mole churned soil, I walk through the quiet forest, thoughts wandering in that way where your head would feel full were it not for the way the thoughts never settle, arising and moving on again like the wind. As much as witchcraft springs forth from the land, it behaves as if it is some sort of creature, half-feral, sentient, & roaming across the landscape. Sharp of tooth & claw, in exchange for it teaching us how to reclaim our power, how to wield power to create real & lasting change, witchcraft demands that we become effective in wielding that power. This becomes evident as situations arise in our lives, fraught with synchronicity & foreboding, that require us to turn our eyes inward, to confront shadow & do the work of personal growth. It’s as if witchcraft turns to face us, chewing & scratching at us to tear away all the nonsense with which we burden and preoccupy ourselves. And in doing so, we are made to be better witches. The consequence of wielding power to create change is to be changed by that power. The vessel is made stronger so it can hold more & so it can pass on those contents with less contamination & loss. This strengthening is not always pleasant & can, in fact, be quite uncomfortable. Encountering these demands of change, of personal growth and improvement, for the first time frequently comes as a sort of rite of passage: an ordeal all witches must face yet not all pass through. For the witch who passes through this rite, the depths of witchcraft are revealed for they can only be reached through the depths of ourselves. And for the witch who is forced to confront themselves & turns back, resisting the call to dig in, dig deep, & chew out the rot? These are the witches who, despite years of practice, believe there is nothing more to witchcraft than correspondences & candles, archetypes & affirmations… Been talking about this quite a bit in The Winding Way the last few days so thought I’d share it here. Unpacking my groceries today, I found myself thinking that everything seems smaller. Food shrinking, and yet somehow more expensive. The world starts to feel like that, smaller and meaner, as though just existing is like leaning into a grudge. I don’t like feeling like that. And as that sensation overcame me, like a sudden shadow cast over the day, I felt smaller, colder and frightened. Sometimes it feels as if modernity is just that- a shrinking away, portions for each person being carved smaller and smaller until one’s belly is never full. There is only one antidote to it, or I know of only one. I put away the groceries, shelving oats, chickpeas and spices. I appreciated that my pantry was full enough to feed our household for a week. And then I went to look outside. While winter is still meant to be here, its grasp has loosened on the land. Spring streams in with golden sunlight. The birds are certain that the season is turning, the local magpies singing and showing off, seeking mates and preparing for nests and eggs and new baby birds. There is a discontent in many people’s hearts, I think, and I feel it myself at times. That the promises we were made for the future disintegrated, unrealised, and that the world is hard concrete and traffic, and that bed never brings true rest. It makes me sad. And it makes me seek out that connection and contentment elsewhere, in the songs of local birds and the sound of their wings spreading in flight. You can hear that, you know, if you listen. I turn to the simple happiness of my cat, sleeping satisfied nearby, and the nights spent in my home, listening to stories with my dearest witch, my needles clicking as I knit. It is the small things, the slow things, the time spent with people and animals I love. It is these things that are the bastion against discontent and disconnection. I know no other cure.
