These 3 lovely dogs have come to the end of their behaviour programmes and all 3 have done brilliantly. Azrael the Rottie was dog to dog reactive but this behaviour had developed as he matured. It was discovered he had elbow displaysia which was causing pain and strain in his back and hips. This was addressed with physio and pain relief as well as some lead skills and heโs now much more relaxed around dogs ๐๐ป Bonnie the Goldie had possession aggression mainly with resources at home . She was also quite anxious . We taught her a set of skills to reduce resource guarding and built her confidence at home and on walks. A big part of her Behaviour issues was her family didnโt really understand her - now they do and sheโs improved a lot ๐ฉท Scout the Parsons Jack Russell was anxious around dogs and had nipped a few. We worked on her lead skills , improved her tolerance of dogs and introduced muzzle training . She will now pass most dogs with minimal fuss and loves going out on the bike with her dad . I love watching how dogs and their families grow in confidence and life skills with a bit of understanding and a sprinkle of โVictorias Magicโ! Dogs and Children ๐ถ๐ถ Here you will see a big part of successful children and dog relationships: ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ Separation is important for: ๐Safety๐ If not under direct supervision, separation means neither the dog nor the child can make any mistakes that might lead to unwanted behaviours. It can also be important to ensure no toxic food items are given to your canine companion. ๐Behavioural Regulation and Learning๐ Both your dog and child can have space away to decompress and learn within safe environments. This can mean active learning without distraction or independent learning/play without others around. ๐Expectations๐ Both dogs and children need consistency and expectations set. This can mean your child can't have access 24/7 to the dog, but we shouldn't have expectations that a dog should cope with all child interactions. Your dog should always have a choice to opt in but importantly opt out. In addition, there can be times when we need 1:1 time with children and thus we need our dogs to be able to cope with being separated temporarily. ๐Healthy Relationships๐ Having more separation and supervision, WIll increase the chances of a healthy and communitive relationship between your dog and child. If your dog can trust your child by knowing the option to move away is always available, their confidence in them will grow. In addition, being able to directly supervise your child learning how to interact suitably with your dog, means they will respect your dog's wishes, learning important skills with compassion. It is hard, but so important for any family dog and children growing up with dogs. Our personal road hasn't been completely smooth, but at all times there has been a plan as to what we want/need as a family. Saxon (our dog) has taken months to be able to fully relax when separated from the family. I met up with Nala and her owners today to see her progress. Nalas owners did a 12-hour training package that has been done over a year. Nala is a different dog. Her owners never thought they would be able to walk her due to her being reactive to everything outside of the home. Well, look at her now. The key to success comes from the owners putting in the work using the tools I give them on a regular basis, which needs to be done daily. Well done, Nala and her owners. In just a few weeks he is now able to be outside on his driveway and be calm ๐คฉ๐ฅณ Olly has been re-starting his socialisation after being rescued by his dedicated owners ๐๐ The outside world can be very overwhelming for a lot of dogs who have missed out on normal life interactions. This can mean extreme fear or extreme excitement, both affecting arousal control and rationality ๐๐คฉ๐คฏ This means re-setting with gentle and calm exposures is often required, to re-learn and importantly keep them under their emotional threshold ๐ค๐ Olly has been doing extremely well and so far, smashing his targets. Sadly Iโm seeing more and more dogs who have been subjected to punishment based training techniques. And owners who find me for help after another trainer has abused their dog. Especially Iโm seeing a rise in the use of aversive collars such as prong collars and grot collars both of which create pain on the dogs neck. Yesterday outside a cafe I saw a beautiful Vizsla wearing a grot collar. The grot was right against the dogs windpipe and up high behind his ears pressing on the carotid nerve . The lad holding the dog jerked the lead vertically upwards several times to prompt the dog into a sit and then shoved on the dogs rump to push it down. This action would have caused pain on the dogs fragile windpipe and pressed on his carotid nerve In other words the dog was forced to sit using pain and pressure to comply This is just lazy ignorant handling - I wouldnโt even call it training. Itโs a form of abuse . The dog complied with its tail tucked tight under its body . There was no joy cooperation or willingness in the dogs body language - he complied because it hurt his throat . It is SO easy to teach a dog to sit with a hand signal . I was saddened to see this beautiful dog being bullied and manhandled with no thought to his comfort or welfare. Punishment tools are designed to hurt or inflict fear on your dog. They suppress behaviour- they donโt teach or change underlying emotions. If a trainer starts bullying your dog or putting aversive equipment in your dog - run a mile !! Do you know what to look for in a #behaviourist? Looking for someone to help your pet and not sure where to go? Thereโs a plethora of people offering advice but how qualified are they? Unfortunately behaviourist is not a protected term, so anyone can charge you whatever amount they like for giving advice with literally no qualifications. It breaks my heart when taking a history to hear how much time and money some clients have previously spent with either unqualified at best, or harmful at worst people prior to seeing me. When looking for help, please make sure you look for someone accredited with the @abtcouncil as people listed on their website will have had qualifications checked and should be using only force free techniques. I wear many hats! Iโm a #veterinarybehaviourist. That means I spent 6 years studying at @bristol_veterinary_school, graduating in 2009 with a Veterinary Degree and a 1st in Animal Behaviour and Welfare. In 2014 I passed my exams with the @anzcvs and became a Vet Behaviourist. This means I can advise on behaviour as well as holistically assessing for anything physical that may be affecting how the dog or cat feels.
