It feels so good to be posting this ☄️! I’ll be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Bluegrass, Old time, and Roots Music Studies, ( with an Audio concentration ), and a Minor in Appalachian Studies next week! 💥 This past week has been a whirlwind! Just like this whole semester has been.. Found out I get to walk on May 4th! I was at the Down Home every night this week either playing with a band or running sound, or both. It was so awesome getting to hear everyone in the program perform! And such a bittersweet last ETSU show! Tomorrow will be my last intern shift at The Martin Center for the Arts…12 hour day 🫠 lol… Then a few papers/finals.. Then done! Ive had a rough few years and an extra rough last one .. being able to come back to Tennessee and finish my degree was a goal I set for my self around this time last year... I did it in one semester 🔥. Now, watch me make the rest of them come to fruition. 🌞🌻 .. #etsubluegrass #bluegrass #appalachianstudies #audioengineer #graduation #graduate #goalachieved

Diddly decided to find a spot to relax, enjoy some good tunes and educate himself on Appalachian ballet history. Last week you could find Diddly in the “Ballet in Appalachia: 75 Years with Bristol Ballet” exhibit. He was placed in a display case that contained artifacts from the Bristol Ballet. The Bristol Ballet was started in 1948 by Constance Hardinge as a school for the training of young people in the art of dance. In 1959, Miss Hardinge founded a performing company, this company grew in stature and became one of the leading regional ballet companies in the nation. In 1966 Bristol Ballet produced the area’s first “Nutcracker” ballet, which some of the artifacts in the case originate from. For the month of April, we invite you to visit the Reece Museum and challenge you to #FindDiddly (a 3D print based off of a taxidermized opossum in our collection that has grown to be affectionately known as “Diddly.”) hidden in the museum! In order to win, you must… 👉Take a picture of Diddly where you found him 👉Post it to your story and tag us @etsureecemuseum 👉Come receive your prize at the front desk The prize this week is 2 Reece Museum buttons. In a moment of reflection, Diddly thought about his past decisions and put trust in himself to find the best hiding spot possible. Last week, Diddly was found in the “Column of Diversity”, which was the result of a workshop led by color therapy educator and artist Nija Woods. The abstracted tree stands as a vibrant symbol of diversity, unity and resilience. It is adorned with layers of colors embodying the richness of our backgrounds, just as these hues intertwine so do our stories and journeys creating a dynamic tapestry of community strength. Nija woods invites you to add your own creative experience to the tree, if you would like to do so materials to create are located at the front desk. Diddly took a look at the man in the mirror and asked him to make a change. So, he did. Last week Diddly was found by the artifact “Pier Glass”, a Victorian trumeau mirror that was created by French convicts c.1870. The mirror was bequeathed to the Reece Museum by Jessie Ackerman, a friend of University President Charles C. Sherrod in the mid 1920’s. Ohioan Farmer Diaries (AC-935) is a newly-added collection to the Special Collections Research Center. The collection contains 19 diaries by William Stymmes. Daily entries date from January 1, 1872 to December 31, 1891. Each day briefly records the weather, Symmes’s activities, the level of the river, events, such as deaths, visitors, hearing preachers, etc. and more. The diaries have hand sewn bindings and the covers are a mix of handmade and commercially-produced papers varying in color. William Symmes (1817-1892) was born in Jackson County, West Virginia, and married Eliza Matthews of Cheshire, Gallia County, Ohio, in 1820. Symmes settled in Gallia County with his wife. He opened a general store in 1854 and held various town offices throughout his life. In 1875, he sold his store and goods to Sanford & Maddy and focused on farming and maintaining his homestead. #specialcollections #archives #diaries #ohioanfarmer #farmerdiaries #cheshireohio #appalachianstudies #appalachia #ohiohistory #appalachianhistory

The Special Collections Research Center recently added a new collection — the Charles “Chuck” Miller papers. The collection includes the personal collection of Charles “Chuck” Allen Miller (1937-2019), a notable professor and author.  Miller studied music as a child and took lessons from the folk music specialist Ruth Crawford Seeger. He was also a former camper and counselor at Camp Catawba, a camp for Jewish boys that opened in the 1940s. Miller played an active role in compiling the camp’s papers and wrote the book, A Catawba Assembly. Image 1 - Chuck Miller is at the forefront at Grandfather Mountain in 1956 Image 2 - A sniper from a composition likely written by Miller entitled “OH Mrs. Seeger,” dated July 5 when he took music lessons with Ruth Crawford Seeger from 1945-1947 #archives #ruthcrawfordseeger #ruthseeger #campcatawba #appalachia #appalachianstudies #appstudies #grandfathermountain

Black Mesa to Appalachia 🏜️🌿🏔️ • Last week, Tó Nizhóní Ání team members traveled to Southwest Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, and Western North Carolina for a cross-culture exchange from the Black Mesa region here in the Navajo Nation to the Central Appalachian Region. • Our team spent the week from March 5th to March 10th traveling with Willie Dodson, the Central Appalachian Field Coordinator with Appalachian Voices, to learn more about central Appalachia and its history and impacts of coal mining and to meet grassroots organizers fighting for environmental justice in the region. • Tó Nizhóní Ání would like to thank the Sierra Club and the Alliance for Appalachia for making this trip possible. We appreciate your support! We’d also like to thank our long-time partner organization, Appalachian Voices, for organizing this trip for those of us from Black Mesa. We had a great time this past weekend attending the Appalachian Studies Association Conference at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC! This was our first opportunity to take our new tabling setup out to represent the museum. We saw tons of old friends, made some new ones, and got to see presentations from some folks we've been working with throughout the year. We may have inspired some visits to Matewan too! 😉 #appstudies2024 #belovedcommunity #appalachianstudies #asa #mountainheritage @appalachstudies Our regular hours start March 27. We’re glad to have had even a small part in the event last week. It was great to be introduced to new artists and voices, and to see the work of our contributors shared and honored over the weekend. We have some exciting news to share later in the week! Stay tuned.

Home from @appalachstudies conference, exhausted in the best way, and having all the feels. So much gratitude to be part of this kind, fierce community; to be of a place as complex and rich as Appalachia; to witness the important work happening all across our region. I didn’t get enough pictures or sleep, but I sure left with an abundance of beautiful memories and new ideas. #appalachianstudies #asaconference2024 #appalachianstudiesassociation #appalachianstudiesconference #appalachia

We’re grateful and humbled to announce that O Pioneer has received the Appalachian Studies Association’s Jack Spadaro Documentary Award.  The judges commented that O Pioneer is a “…beautiful and inspiring film. Well-paced with rewarding endings. I appreciated the clear messaging about pioneers, rather than vague signals to it.” The Jack Spadaro Documentary Award is given annually to recognize the best documentary film on Appalachia or its people. The award, established in 2005, honors the activist and whistleblower Jack Spadaro, who spent his career working within the coal mining industry for the betterment of the Appalachian community. Thank you to the Appalachian Studies Association! Dr. Melissa D. Birkhofer and Dr. Paul M. Worley will present a paper about Indigenous-Spanish relations in Appalachia at the Appalachian Studies Association’s Conference in March 2024. Their scholarly work “She Said That Saint Augustine Is Worth Nothing Compared To Her Homeland,” discusses the testimony of an Indigenous woman, Teresa Martín, whose testimony about her homeland in what became known as Appalachia sheds light about the Spanish colonial state called “La Florida.” Their work, which was published in the North Carolina Literary Review and won the 2023 John Ehle Prize, contributes to filling in historiographic gaps in this period in US history. Birkhofer and Worley will be part of the panel “Beloved Communities: Language and Resistance for Cherokee/Catawba Indigenous Women” on Friday, March 8, from 9:00 am to 10:15 am. Session 1.11. The convener will be Mae Miller Claxton, and the other presenters are Victoria Allen of Western Carolina University with “Power and Resistance: Cherokee Language Traditions and Communication in Robert Conley’s War Woman,” and Michael Deckardwith of Lenoir-Rhyne University “Irony and Narrative in Robert J. Conley’s War Woman.” Birkhofer is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the English Department and was the Founding Director of WCU’s Program in Latinx Studies, and Worley is the Chair of the Department of Languages, Literatures, & Cultures. #Appstate #2024ASAConference #Appalachia #AppalachianStudies #NCLiteraryReview #faculty #paulworley #melissabirkhofer #paneldiscussion #indigenouswomen #appalachianindigenouswomen #johnehleprize #joara #whitesettlersscholars #spaniardsinappalachia #cherokeeindigenouswomen #catawbaindigenouswomen #languagesliteraturesandcultures @appalachstudies @tsikbal_ich_maya @appstatelanguages @melissabirkhofer @appstatecas Photo: Appalachian State University Department of Communication
