Of all the natural things in Kentucky, agates and wild mushrooms are my absolute favorites. Mind you, I’m a total novice in both, so when I found out The Mountain Mushroom Fest in Estill County combines enthusiasts of both these natural wonders, I was PUMPED. I spent a glorious day this past weekend chatting up the BEST nature nerds and left with a bag full of herbs and a belly full of funnel cake. I just love mushrooms at a rock show, ya know? 🙃 I guess you could say I’m dead set on somehow becoming a ‘lady of the Estill Springs.’ And while I went there being CONVINCED I would be more hyper-fixated on seeing a real morel in real life (don’t you dare come for me on that, this is the simple dream of a bonafide city girl) I actually ended up being so so so so taken by our state rock, the insanely incredible Kentucky Agate. “Hunting for agates in Estill County has been a long-standing tradition since 1964 when agates were found by accident. Agate hunters, often called ‘rockhounds,’ are a folk group who enjoy traveling into the hill country to be out in nature with the wildlife and escape from the world. They wade in the creeks in hopes of red and black agate, which is among the most beautiful found. No place else in the world has black and red agate ever been found. It’s probably the rarest on earth - rarer than the diamond. A good time to hunt agates is after a spring or summer ‘gully washer.’ The hard rain can cause a flash flood that ‘turns the creeks over,’ moving the agates and exposing them. Rockhounds will spend countless hours in relatively inaccessible areas searching creek beds for agates. Tools of the trade include a good pair of waders, a rock hammer, a rockpole, and a backpack. The hunters are like a fraternity with a common interest in bragging about their latest finds.” Estill County rock hound friends, take me hunting with youuuuuu. How we came to call our farm Creek Bank Homestead. We hadn’t really decided on what products we would have available to our customers at the time but due to getting into registered Boer goats we needed a farm name to put on our papers. We wanted something describing our location, about what we do, be relatable to us as a person and not commonly used. We like to dabble in a little of this, sometimes a lot of that. Our goal is to provide as much of our family needs as we can from the farm which is why we chose Homestead instead of Farm. Our farm is located along a creek that feeds into the Kentucky river. Although I love our location what really makes the farm name meaningful to me is that my husband and I actually met on a creek bank! I got some mullein tincture for my husband from @apothecaryonthecreek, an Appalachian folk herbalist whom I’ve purchased from before and has several different tinctures and teas to choose from. I also devoured a delicious pulled pork sandwich and pasta salad from Whitney Horn who had her Horn Holler Homestead food truck out today serving up $10 brisket meal specials ! I also met a new vendor, Miss Inga’s out of Richmond, Kentucky who had some amazing looking baked goods, breads and jellies. I couldn’t pass up the WINE jelly made with @chenaultvineyards Bovine wine!
