Everyone loves beautiful handmade baskets, don't they? Meet our basket making artist Nancy Sickau. "Growing up in a winter wonderland near Buffalo NY in a family with 12 children and black & white television, I found that any form of artistic creativity captured me at an early age. Our parents were of German-Polish descent and firmly believed that we can “make anything.” Afterall, “that’s what God gave us a brain for.” From that flowed our individual talents, which developed into skills or lifelong trades. We were educated by Nuns who further promoted discipline and wise use of one’s abilities. I produce a variety of things, but basketmaking surfaced in 2021 following classes at the Appalachian Arts Craft Center where I was thrilled by the outcome of making a useful product in half a day. ARIES ♈️🔥🐦🔥 Aries gave me the perfect excuse to begin the painting with straight-up cadmium red—no mixing or toning down the color, just big, bold, red-hot color washing over the entire canvas with some blending with deeper colors and a pop of light. At this stage, I felt so experimental in my work and love how art acts as a time stamp. Does anyone else look back on work they’ve made and remember what they were going through at that time in life? I finished up my first back piece this evening and I’m super proud of it. We got it done in 14 hours and every second of it was a learning process. Huge thank you to @_douglife_ for his commitment and toughness throughout this whole thing. Every single day while tattooing, I think to myself, “I cannot believe I get to do this for a living”. I’ve been in love with tattoos since I was a kid and although it took me a long time to get in the gate, I’m unspeakably grateful for it every single day. Last week, our students in the Craft in the Community program learned all about glazing! This is the fifth class in our six week introduction to pottery course at the Oak Ridge Senior Center. One of the most important stages in pottery creation is finishing the piece with a colored glaze. Our instructor, Cathy, shared her knowledge of brush-on glazes as students finished their clay baskets. We can’t wait to see how they turn out after their last firing in the kiln! . The Craft in the Community program is a mobile classroom education initiative created and implemented by Appalachian Arts. LM-04 Rof LOREN MYHRE Steel, Wood, Carpet 9 x 17 x 8 Made from a found piece of carpet, some wood, and steel, Ref is a corporeal study in contrasts and contradictions. The black of the metal, against the pink of the carpet, against the neutral wood tone is quite obvious. Less so is how the sculpted steel form’s faceted surfaces, showing silver against the black are subtly incongruous against the painted plush pile of the carpet. The biomorphic form of the metal belies its hardness and the rigidity of its unyielding structure as it sits on the decidedly softer nylon carpet material, itself hardened by the application of the paint, as they both sit on minimally pliable wood. LM-15 Meddlesome LOREN MYHRE Collage 10.5 x 7 Part of “Meddlesome” originated as a foam cup from a gas station, which Loren flattened out to fit into the collage. Can you pick it out? A more evident element is the remnant of a Chinese newspaper. The Chinese characters have a consonant feel with the vaguely Oriental blue graphic on the bottom half of the work. The bold form in black, charcoal and brown floats in stark contrast to the green and red in the background, overlaid with pebbles floating upwards and downwards in the foreground. My Latest mural titled “Wildfire” on Main Street of Petersburg, WV 🎨 This painting was inspired by the wildfires and heroic efforts our volunteer firefighters displayed during March of this year when thousands of acres were set ablaze, jeopardizing multiple properties. I chose to do a wildfire mural to also serve as a metaphor for regrowth and rejuvenation… As devastating as a wildfire is , it is also nature’s way of providing an opportunity for regrowth. Wildfires allow important nutrients to re-enter the soil creating new habits for plants and animals. I was inspired by the juxtaposition devastating events can provide because during the most difficult times I’ve seen our community come together ‘regrowing’ my pride in Petersburg. Thank you to the @tamarackfoundation and Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department for making this possible.

LM-30 Prolonged Dance LOREN MYHRE Oil on Canvas 18 × 11 The sinuous curves painted against an armature of bold black lines in “Prolonged Dance” impress as ephemeral traces of sinuous movements layered on top of each other. While remaining distinct from each other, the lines meld into a compound mass of gesture and motion. Each of the curves being intrinsically layered enhances the complex structure of this work. At once industrial and gracefully elegant, this work invites rumination and contemplation. LM-20 Two Lousy Heels in December LOREN MYHRE Oil on Panel 9 × 12 The lozenge shape makes an appearance in the two found heel inserts that have been incorporated into this composite work, sharing space with the elaborate brushwork in gray green paint. The organic characteristic of the paintwork is gently contrasted by the shapes of the heels which in turn are also contrasted by the grid pattern of the nylon mesh. The similarity in the widths of the ridges in the paintwork and of the thickness of the nylon strand add a barely tangible layer of cohesiveness to the harmony that already exists with the color palette. “Two Lousy Heels in December” is another work that unifies disparate elements into a reconciled, connected whole. LM-06 WMWMWM LOREN MYHRE Steel, Wood, Collage 10 × 14 x 3.5 A wondrous title for a subtly humorous piece that conjures up the TV antennas of yesteryears before cable took over. The fabric, cut to size and painted accordingly on both sides, are hand-stitched in place. The pattern and coloration evokes rabbit ears, the association further strengthened by the text right behind them, borne on a piece of rowdercoated sheet metal whose upper edge has been roughly cut and scorched to compelling visual and textural effect. The opposite face of the sheet metal features the titular text, with the forms of the letters themselves being vaguely echoed in the image above them. LM-16 Obviously Summer LOREN MYHRE Oil on Panel 9 x 12 Orderly columns collide with wildly energetic rows and are bisected by one of Loren’s iconic pyramids in “Obviously Summer.” The palette of soft pastels and vivid, luminous shades of blue, violet, golden yellow and neon green brings to mind the colors of a hot, bright days of summer. The black underpainting provides an effective foil to the colors in this highly textured painting and brings to mind the color of rich, wet loam soil. The earthy quality of his work might be at least partially explained by Loren’s upbringing in Florida where he gardened and farmed with his family (and continues to garden in Kentucky). Students are working hard during our six week introduction to pottery course at the Oak Ridge Senior Center! We just wrapped up Week 4 with instructor Janet who taught participating seniors to hand-build Ikebana vases. Ikebana is the centuries-old Japanese art of arranging flowers. Two more classes to go - what will these awesome students create next? . This Craft in the Community program is being sponsored by the Tennessee Arts Commission. The Craft in the Community program is a mobile classroom education initiative created and implemented by Appalachian Arts. The primary goal of this initiative is to take Appalachian craft education and materials to advanced-age communities in the greater Anderson County area who are unable to travel to our classroom. This includes retirement homes, assisted living facilities, memory care facilities and neighborhood community centers. . .
