A selection of finds from recent larks: a tudor button, a bead and a half, some pottery sherds (my favourite being the small, horizontal loop, border ware handle, probably from a porringer or a chafing dish), a small bottle base, two pipe bowls, a thorn from a thornback ray and a mystery bone. If anyone knows which part of which animal’s skull, the bone on the right is, please let me know. The foreshore consensus was frog or toad but what we figured would be the eye sockets wouldn’t really work as they are not open, so not so sure anymore. Scroll for close ups
Beginings of an idea. I used a found piece of bark from the wood pile. There will also be fiber and possibly beads. Maybe a brooch, maybe a necklace, maybe a whole series that fills a wall. Who knows! All of the elements are scary and can be massively destructive, as we have daily proof of, but necessary in our lives. Fire is one that I have come to know well. I have several family members who are firefighters, including at one time my husband as a volunteer in his youth. We also use a woodstove for heat, but even though we have this symbiotic relationship with fire, we fully understand that you have to respect and never underestimate Fire. You can never turn your back on it, not for so much as a candle, because all Fire has the potential to end in disaster. Hence the multitude of detectors and extinguishers we have around our home. And now, due to hot flashes, I have an intimate relationship with uncontrollable internal heat. In an exhibition in an old department store, we created sculptures by finding matching pairs of items left behind. A carpet with a cut-out corner, a pedestal that fit the corner, and a glass plate that fit the pedestal became a work of serendipity. LM-07 Waking Up to the Sound LOREN MYHRE Steel, Wood, Fabric 13 x 16 x 11 An assemblage of steel, wood and fabric, “Waking Up to the Sound” combines the geometric and the organic, the hard and the soft, the pliant and the unyielding, the found and the fabricated. The square of white fabric, block printed and collaged, is suspended from wire threaded through a dowel - a wood handle for a tool? remnant from a broomstick? - that is attached by an elegant metal neck to a welded metal assembly. The off-kler angle of the neck gives this sculpture an intriguingly animated feel. CW References to Suicide Another installation from a bit over a month ago that I was debating putting a tw in front but that kinda… defeats the purpose of why I made it in the first place 😅 I wanted the people who saw the installation in person to be forced to interact with the topic of suicide. Viewers were invited to sit in the chair which was a whole different experience from just glancing from afar. My main goal was to force interaction and conversation with a huge issue amongst our communities, and acknowledge that the fact that we shun suicide awareness and label it as taboo is a major societal failure. I’m glad it was received well by my peers and I hope people online get what I’m going for. LM-18 Blue Triangles LOREN MYHRE Oil on Panel 12 x 12 Both the color blue and the triangle are rife with meaning. Blue symbolizes spirituality, intuition, inspiration and inner peace. It also represents sadness and depression (the “blues”). In healing blue is used for cooling and calming, both physically and mentally. In the aura blue indicates serenity, contentment and spiritual development. It is the color of the ocean and the sky; it often symbolizes serenity, stability, inspiration, or wisdom. As a calming color, it can also symbolize reliability. The triangle is the polygon with the least number of sides, and is said to symbolize the three aspects of the self - the mind, body, and spirit - coming together in harmony and balance. When it is sitting squarely on its base, it is thought by some to represent perfection, and signifies power, religion, purpose and strength. Some also associate triangles with groups of 3, like: A father, mother, and child. The past, the present, and the future. Tilt a triangle on its side and it shows movement, drive, innovation, and passion. Balance it on its tip and it takes on a whole other level of meaning: daring, precision, edgy, and bold. Layering the symbolisms between the different shades of the color blue and the different orientations and combinations of the triangles in “Blue Triangles” makes for an interesting contemplation on context, color and shape. LM-01 Ibi LOREN MYRE Steel, Wood, Bamboo 25 × 10 × 7 A highly abstract construction, “Ibi” is made from steel, found wood, and bamboo. The random collection of materials have been combined in a rhythm that lets their respective proportions work together. Their shapes and forms are rudimentary, and the way they are held fast to each other appears sublimely simple. But as the eye wanders around “Ibi”, it presents as a pleasingly completed puzzle in how the steel folds around and encases the wood pieces in a quiet geometry, and how the textures are a visual and tactile harmony between raw, natural and rough-hewn. This is a piece that demands to be seen in the round.
