May 21, 1977 Lakeland Civic Center, Lakeland FL Dick’s Picks #29 “This is one of the best shows of May 1977, and contains some of the year’s finest moments. The first set is strong, with nice versions of Bertha, Row Jimmy, and Passenger. But the standout is the transcendent Scarlet>Fire medley, which is a possible best of the year performance. The transition in particular is total magic: note perfect and smooth as smooth can be, while at the same time maintaining an amazing sense of flow and buildup, like only the finest improvisations can. The giant second set medley is spectacular as well, particularly the jam out of He’s Gone (rarely jammed out during this time) which has a very Other One-ish feel before segueing into the song proper. The Other One is very spirited leading up to the verses, rivaling the intensity of the version from 5/18. Fellow deadheads, yesterday I promised a doozy of a show and today I deliver! Grateful Dead are back in Bigfoot country in the Pacific Northwest playing the Hec Edmonds Pavilion in Seattle, Washington on May 21st 1974. This is a true monster of a show featuring the infamous Wall of Sound. The band set a record that day by playing the longest continuous song they’d ever play clocking in at just over 46 minutes in length! What song you ask, none other than Playing in the Band. This song was released as an entire album for Record Store Day back in 2018. Only 7,400 copies were made. They played their 3rd and last ever version of Money Money. May 20, 1973 – the Grateful Dead performed at the Campus Stadium of U.C. Santa Barbara. The concert, which started at noon, was opened by the New Riders of the Purple Sage, now a regular addition to the Dead family. The stage setup at UCSB featured a mini-version of the band’s famous Wall of Sound. This included an array of Hard Trucker speaker cases and McIntosh amplifiers, along with Jerry Garcia’s twin reverb amp and Courtney Pollack’s tie-dyed speaker cabinets. Notably, there were towering columns of speakers on either side of the stage, forming the primary PA system. These speakers came in various sizes and shapes to handle different aspects of the band’s sound. A large canvas shade was suspended between the scaffolding that supported the PA stacks, providing some relief from the sun. Throughout the performance, Jerry Garcia played his Alembic-modified Stratocaster, known as “Alligator,” while Bob Weir used a modified Gibson SG. Late post for 5.19.74 by popular demand May 19, 1974 ~ Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland OR Pacific Northwest Box Set This is the 5th Wall of Sound of Sound show and the band crushes it without any of the usual heavy hitters like PITB, Dark Star, The Other One or Eyes. The first set is highlighted by an exceptional China>Rider that features a spectacular transitional Feelin’ Groovy Jam. Do not miss Billy’s drumming during the a capella segment at the end of I Know You Rider! Other highlights include Black Throated Wind, Sugaree, and Jack Straw. There is also a rare performance of Money Money (performed only 3 times ever). The second set opens with the 1-2-3 punch of Promised Land>Bertha>Greatest Story. Keith is totally on and leads the way especially on Greatest Story. The middle of the set features a beautiful, early version of Peggy-O (only the fourth performance). What follows is an all-time performance of Truckin’. After the lyrics we get an intense buildup that leads to an explosive climax. From there things get interesting as the boys take us on a long, creative and very unique jam that starts in hyperdrive and moves into an extra distorted “Mind Left Body” jam. This post-Truckin’ jam is the epitome of what Phil refers to when he said “when we were at our best, we could turn it on like a faucet.” Boy, do they ever. Don’t let the Truckin’ distract you from how awesome the NFA is. It has a unique, funky breakdown toward the transition into GDTRFB that carries over some of the creativity that defined the jams before. The ensuing GDTRFB absolutely cooks! After Jerry’s solo Keith steps up and gets his own solo time which did not happen very often in this song.
