Originally constructed in 1922, the Historic Penn St. Bridge over the Maiden Creek is closed to traffic and is overgrown with weeds. It is still passable on foot. Although there don't seem to be any plans to rehabilitate the bridge, it is eligible for consideration as a historic structure and is considered to be an excellent example of the particular type of construction. Prior to the construction of US 22 (now Old 22), Penn Street in Lenhartsville joined the Hamburg to New Tripoli Road (now PA 143) with Dreibelbis Station Road. An old furnace and rail access as well as the Dreibelbis Mill were near that intersection. This weekend my whole household took a road-trip down to rural Pennsylvania for the twenty-sixth annual all-day Maidencreek Sacred Harp singing in Hamburg, PA!!! The singing was held at an old Quaker Friends Meetinghouse and it was absolutely fantastic!! The sound was incredible! And there were so many lovely humans from a really broad cross section of different walks of life!! It was only my second singing outside of Massachusetts. And also Becky’s “singing of origin” area, so it was wonderful to meet and sing with so many folks I had heard stories about, who are part of the broader shape note singing community! Plus, it was just a really fun Fortnight House (+Sam!) road-trip!!! Last Saturday, Berks Nature returned to Andrew Maier Elementary School in support of their on-going Learning by Nature initiative and campus-wide re-greening. A total of 40 trees were planted along the campus’ perimeter and on the adjacent property owned by the Maiden Creek Water Authority, a frequent partner of Berks Nature on source water protection projects. Together these trees will provide privacy, shade, wildlife habitat, and carbon sequestration. The properties include several farms with rolling hills and forested hollows in the viewshed of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and the Appalachian Trail from State Game Lands 106. The easement now protects agricultural land used for hay, row crops, and pasture in rural Albany Township. . The easement gives highest protection to the forested riparian buffers, wetlands, and floodplains of three unnamed tributaries to Pine Creek, an important tributary to the Maiden Creek. At the beginning of this year we planted ten varieties of heirloom amaranth. January conditions are hardly optimal for amaranth so we started in our @farmshelf units @tendergreens Union Square. The plants sprouted and thrived. Soon growing out of the units we transplanted to organic soil at our Maiden Creek Farm. The Maiden Creek plants exploded with shoots of purple, red and pink blooms reaching 5ft in height. By September the seeds were ready for harvest. We hung them in the barn next to our hemp plants to dry. Today we are serving these seeds popped in hot algae oil like popcorn along with newly picked leaves from the Farmshelf units to make up the body of an amaranth tabouli for tonight’s food forever event in DC.
