Almost 30 years after discovering the Dead, we made it to a show together and ran into old friends we met for the first time, one of whom sent me home with a gift for my wife. @epmatlock happened to FaceTime me before the show began, so the crowd yelled hello. Fantastic hot sets! Bobby was feeling it, Oteil was in his hip-shaking pocket, John melted faces during Morning Dew, Jeff’s organ achieved lift off during Fantasy. Have you ever wondered where my studio name came from? Ken Kesey (author) and the Merry Pranksters lived communally at Kesey's homes in California and Oregon, and are noted for the sociological significance of a lengthy road trip they took in the summer of 1964, traveling across the United States in a psychedelic painted school bus called Furthur, organizing parties and giving out LSD. A couple of the many travelers who hopped on board were members of The Grateful Dead. Fast forward to 1994 through 1998 to the campus of Mt. St. Mary’s College. I’m an art student, really loving stained glass, spending most of my time living the college life, and listening to the Grateful Dead. For my Senior Project I of course select staiend glass. I created two large panels (36”x 60”) each, two mannequin heads of glass and copper foil called the Twisted Sisters, and a few large agate slices with copper foil overlay. The project was called “Destination: Further” because of the destination sign on Ken Kessey’s bus. My booth at art shows is frequented by many Deadheads and older hippies who stand outside my booth looking at the sign Further Staiend Glass. Then they come and say “is your studio named for the Grateful Desd and the Bus? So that’s the story…The bus came by and i got on, that's when it all began. I have always been Further Stained Glass since that senior art show. Happy April 26 to all!!! On this day in 1972, the #gratefuldead played Jahrhundert Hall in Frankfurt. In law school on summer abroad, we drove from Amsterdam to Innsbruck and I made sure to stop in Frankfurt to pay homage. I’ve had a recording of this show since I was 15 (25 years ago) and @bnjnz made me a tape! It opens with a smoking Bertha and has the tightest China Cat —> Rider transition I’ve heard. I woke up this morning, discussed some of the finer points of the different releases with Deadheads, and put together a 7 song playlist for an 8 mile run... didn’t come close to finishing the playlist. 7 songs = 95 mins! Of course #pigpen lays it down on Lovelight and The Other One off the complete ‘72 is on fire!
