Virginia: America’s First Frontier Pt 2 More photos from yesterday’s trip. The man in the first photo was a doctor who ran a hospital in Louisville. He has several birch canoes. He also told us that this coming September he was celebrating his 20th anniversary of climbing Mt Kilimanjaro. I loved listening to the musician. He played a handmade Navajo flute, he also had a tin flute and a lute. The song he played on the lute was too long to post, but it was a beautiful ballad of a young woman whose true love went to war and hadn’t returned after seven years. The documents posted were from an older gentleman’s personal collection. The man said this was his last year traveling. He was 81 years old and has had malaria twice, been shot and stab once each, traveled to 76 countries, served under 3 presidents. He spent his childhood reading from his family’s library that contained some of Sir Walter Scott’s personal collection. He also had several items in his home that belonged to Abraham Lincoln. Someone of the papers he had were about the State of Franklin. This was a subject I knew very little about until I read The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn by @lorilbenton I immediately thought of her when I saw these. Happy little moment after a lonnngg drive for work this AM but at the delivery site I got a chance to do a little #foraging. Found some #WildLettuce a great #MedicinalPlant for pain relief and sedation. This variety had a purple flower which I am so far unfamiliar with so I’ll do some researching on that soon! The majority of the #medicinal compounds are found in the sticky, milky sap, a type of natural latex I believe (so CAUTION IF YOU HAVE A LATEX ALLERGY or one to the MARIGOLD FAMILY) Another name due to its effects and alkaloid compounds which interact on our body’s #opioid receptors is #Opium Lettuce but.. I assure you, like all plants in the lettuce family, it is a VERY MILD opioid ( more potent alkaloid levels have been bred out of our common garden lettuces, but they still have them) wild lettuce is a bit weaker even than the popular tea esque #Kratom tree which still is a very mild opiod (which typically takes several grams to equal even the weak prescription opioid pills, but interestingly in spite of some states banning it and an effort on the #Federal level to do the same, remains a vital medicine for individuals seeking to get off prescription pain pills and street #drugs like #heroin and #fentanyl , many attributing it to saving their lives). Wild Lettuce has been used as a #FolkMedicine for a long, long time, both by North American #Indians and #AmericanSettlers alike and still used today, I’ve even found it for sale in a #medicine shop near me. The stems and leaves are often smoked when dried but arguably the most effective way to prepare it is to extract the sap via water soaking and once the #plant material is filtered to a tar like substance which can then be used as is, smoked, or made into a #tincture. Many people use it for things like #arthritis , #anxiety , and #insomnia . While some folks in #Appalachia continue to use it as a social #smoking #herb much like #tobacco. The Departure of the Pilgrim Fathers. Depicted here is the start of the voyage to the ‘New World’ of the Pilgrim Fathers. In 1608, a group of about a hundred deeply religious Calvinists, refusing to subordinate themselves to the ordinance of the Anglican church, set sail from Nottinghamshire to escape persecution under James I. They set course to the Dutch Republic, known for its religious tolerance. Even though they were allowed to live life according to their principals, the group was weighed down by poverty. Besides, their leaders feared assimilation with lesser orthodox puritans within the Leiden community. From 1617 the idea emerged to emigrate to the ‘New World’. The intention for the here depicted ‘Speedwell’ had been to join the ship ‘Mayflower’ off the coast of Southampton, from where the two ships with pilgrims would continue in convoy. Unfortunately, the ‘Speedwell’ proved unfit for the transatlantic journey as it leaked. Therefore, the crew of the Dutch ship went on board of the ‘Mayflower’. After some detours the puritans arrived in Massachusetts where they established Plymouth Colony. At the very beginning the inexperienced settlers met with the friendliness of the local native Americans, who supported them in their basic needs. Later this would be the foundation for ‘Thanksgiving’. Nowadays its debated whether the festive day should not be a day of commemorating the subduing of the Native Americans too. One can argue there is nothing to be thankful for from an indigenous perspective. This painting is by Cornelis Liefrinck (c. 1581- after 1652), a fellow student of Willaerts. Willaerts painted the now famous painting of the Mayflower’s departure which can now be found in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. ⛲️Self Care Saturday⛲️ Throwing back to the time I had a special treat and made an escape to a beloved place in Northern California: a wine-country getaway located on natural hot springs. 😌 One of my favorite kinds of self-care—unfortunately not affordable very often—is alone time to read in a different environment, with some good food and spa treatments thrown in! How about you? 🚂 SMALL WORLD🚊 I had Jonathan Evison’s Small World with me on that trip, but just got to reading it this past week. I loved his Lawn Boy (a frequent target of the “let’s ban all the books!” folks) and have another, Legends of the North Cascades, waiting on my #tbrshelf. Small World is an old-fashioned epic, ambitious and sweeping, covering multiple generations of families across time periods and locations in America. The connecting element is a modern-day train ride, with its engineer and an assortment of passengers whose ancestors we also meet as the plot moves back and forth in time. There’s a page-turning, suspenseful element to the story as we jump time periods and characters in short, punchy chapters. I loved visiting the Gold Rush era, witnessing the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, spending time with Irish and Chinese immigrants, journeying with escaped slaves, and walking the path of Miwok Indians, while also being dropped into the present day concerns of their descendants: impending basketball games and college scholarships, retirement, abusive relationships, high-powered careers and affluence and child rearing. Present here is certainly criticism of the promise of the American dream and how we have historically failed our immigrants, but this book also offers hope about our interconnectedness across location, time, race and class. I closed the pages feeling contented with such great storytelling, allowing me to bear witness to the melting pot of 19th century nation-building and its effects today. Highly recommend! I also loved the experience of riding trains in Europe as a backpacker, and now as I read about the great promise of the Transcontinental Railroad back in the day, I wish we currently found ourselves relying on trains more in the US!

A few months ago when I moved here one of my first stops was the library and I took a few pictures of articles and things I found on the house history. Looking back now, I realize this photo also shows a house called the Isaac Goodrich house, also built in the 1700s on the same street! Because of the post I made a while back about the plaque on the bridge near my street saying “Goodrich Square” I came in touch with @johngoodrich950 who is a descendant! I was excited to get to share this find with him as well. It’s highly likely the descendants of the Goodrich brothers who were around during the settling of Wethersfield and lived in that home associated with Roger Butler (my home) just a few doors away!

Most of the colonies required able-bodied males to provide their own arms and participate in the militia, and at times required persons to carry arms to church and other places. . . ." While true in some instances, especially in highly populated cities where sewage contaminated water supplies, many Colonists did consume water. In fact, “bottled” water—water drawn from wells outside of cities and brought into town by “tea-water men”—was quite popular in cities. Had a kick ass afternoon metal detecting with my buddy Dan today. This site only showed up on the 1859 map and was gone by 1876. It was all the way out in the middle of the field, it was awesome. It took us a while to find but we eventually found it. Dan had some pretty amazing finds as well, including a New York State militia button, 1811 Large cent and a 1864 IHP, he had 9 buttons total.
