And now for something completely different. Hawthorne and Horowitz are back, this time investigating the fatal shooting with a crossbow of a hedge fund manager who has managed to piss off every neighbour in his upmarket Richmond cul-de-sac. So far so Midsomer Murders and this book absolutely delivers that cosy Sunday-night murder mystery vibe. I can tell I’m becoming middle-aged because I was delighted by the setting and the petty grievances between neighbours. Forget thrillers that show someone defusing a nuclear bomb while dangling off a helicopter, I’ll take a parking dispute any time. It’s typically well-executed - the timelines are complex and the solution to the locked room mystery element is truly original. The only shame about this one is that you don’t get very much of the Horowitz-Hawthorne interaction since the story mostly takes place in the past, using Hawthorne’s case notes. Even the denouement doesn’t bring them both together. I found myself missing that chemistry, or sparks flying at least. I imagine it’s quite hard to keep writing realistic murder scenarios in which Horowitz himself might have been embroiled. I read Dark Matter two years ago and it's still my favorite sci-fi book ever 😍 Blake Crouch in general has such an excellent writing style so I'm excited to read his latest book, Recursion! . . Dark Matter delves into the thought that there exists a multiverse and that we all have versions of ourselves that made different decisions than what we did in our particular universe. With this thought in mind, the main character ends up getting lost amongst the various versions of our world and ultimately has to find his way back to his correct universe! Honestly, for a computer nerd like me this stuff is like candy 🤤. . . Dark Matter gets a 5/5🌟 from me! Turning the page and closing the chapter of office 212. A little over year ago on March 2023 I checked off a big goal of mine for my business and got the keys to my first private office. I was so very proud of this accomplishment and for the last year I have used that office to build my brand, make meaningful connections, as well been able create a safe space and calming environment for my in-person coaching clients to come to during our one-on-one sessions Now it is time to turn the page on this chapter of being in that office and it definitely a bittersweet moment. So on May 19th 2024 I turned in my office keys to make room for what God has in store for me and my brand next. In this season of my life there is so much shifting happening and even though it feels uncomfortable I know that God is setting me up for greater. I have so much more in store for my brand/business and I know that obedience is so necessary to get there. 🤍 . . . #ななの推し活 鎌倉長谷にある古本屋Turn the Page さん(@turnthepage_kamakurahase )へ行ってきました。 投稿を拝見して、絶対にここで川端康成の本を買いたい！と思っていたので、買えて満足です。 家まで待ちきれず、カフェに入ってさっそく読みました。 『眠れる美女』に収録されているどのお話もなかなかのきもちわるさ、鮮烈さで、思わず我を忘れて読み入ってしまいました。 あまり詳しくない私でもなんとなくわかるくらい川端康成だからこそ書ける文章で、いいなぁとうわぁが入り混じったきもちで読み終わりました。 『坊っちゃん』は私にとって特別な思い入れのある本。 以前とある人に自分の考えを正直に話したところ、「見かけによらず『坊っちゃん』みたいな人なんだね」と言われたことがあります。 無鉄砲でなければ喧嘩っ早くもない(と自分では思っている)のですが、その人からは曲がったことが大嫌いなところが似ていると言われました。 それを言われて喜んでいいのやら反省したらいいのやら……ですが、それからモヤモヤしたときや初心を忘れそうなときは読み返すようにしていました。 しばらく読んでいなかったので、久しぶりに読みたいと思い購入しました。 長谷駅には行ったことがあったのですが、お店に気づいていませんでした。 駅を出てすぐ、人がたくさんいる混み合った通りから1歩奥に入ると「古本」と書かれた黄色い看板がありお店があります。 あまり広くはないのですが、素敵な本たちが丁寧に並べられていて、薄暗く静かで、お店に入った瞬間にまるで別の世界に来たかのような気分になります。 現実感がなく、夢のような空間。 お店にいる間だけ慌ただしくて騒々しい現実から逃げ出せるような場所でした。 お店の方もとても優しくて、ニコニコお話していただけるので私も思わず笑顔に☺️ 大好きな場所になりました。 ぜひまた行きたい！ . . .
