Happy Birthday to Daphne du Maurier who was #BornOnThisDay, 13 May 1907. She wrote 17 novels, a number of short stories, three plays, and a lot of non-fiction too. I came to her writing through Hitchcock’s film adaptation of her book Rebecca. Rebecca remains my favourite book of hers and one of my favourite books of all time. And that’s coming someone who can’t commit to a favourite colour. Daphne du Maurier’s writing shows great range with no one book being like another. Coinciding with the Venice Art Biennial opening days, we will open with a site-specific installation by the Amsterdam-based graphic design collective Experimental Jetset. — Experimental Jetset Beyond the Space of Fragile Geometry 18.04-30.06.2024 Opening Today 18.04, 6 pm! The work of Experimental Jetset focuses primarily on printed matter and site-specific installations and is unique in the way it seeks to “transform language into objects.” A key theme in their research is the relationship between sign and city, viewing the city as a platform and infrastructure for language and information. For Ca’Buccari, Experimental Jetset developed a series of outdoor banners as a large-scale spatial installation with an accompanying documentation that builds on a close reading of Régis Debray’s Manifesto Against Venice (1995), Nicolas Roeg’s 1973 psychological thriller Don’t Look Now, and the brick-wall motif used by Provo—the Amsterdam anarchist movement of the mid-1960s. As the installation extends from Ca’Buccari into the surrounding arcades, it plays with notions around public and private—in the city, in infrastructure, and in language.
