A day in Venice…. And what a magical place it is. We got to break up our trip to Milan design week with one jam packed day in Venice to soak up the magic, the culture and the art. The best part for me was getting into step inside another space of @vdecotiis for his launch of @vincenzodecotiisfoundation . His work for me is like none other, it genuinely takes you to another world. I also got to meet the man himself and the talented @fionalynchoffice which was a real treat. Venice itself, like Italy overall, never fails to enchant and captivate, design details and brimming history at every corner. By the means at hand by Vlatka Horvat, Horvat asked artist friends based all over the world to exchange works with her. All the artists she has approached live as “foreigners” in different countries, and she asked them to make a drawing that reflects in some way on their experience of diaspora. For every artwork she receives, Vlatka sends each artist a collage from the series she is making while in residence in Venice, using images she has taken of the city. All the works travel to Venice and back via informal transport networks; in bags and suitcases of friends, acquaintances, and sometimes strangers enlisted as couriers for the project. Now on view at the @denverartmuseum in our Modern and Contemporary art galleries: Jeffrey Gibson’s “Freedom” (2013). “Freedom” is a sculpture that explores the lines formed by tipi poles as they appear in the historic utilitarian tool called a travois. Used particularly by nomadic people, poles were lashed together into a triangle form so they could be pulled by a horse, person, or dog in order to carry a heavy payload. In this sculpture Gibson has fitted an oversized travois with a large parfleche trunk. Each panel of the trunk is painted in his brightly colored geometric patterning, referencing both the geometry used in beadwork and ribbon work as well as abstract painters such as Sol LeWitt and Frank Stella. The trunk is so large that if filled it would be far too heavy to be used. As an empty vessel it stands as a metaphor for the things both physical and psychological that we carry with us and contribute to a sense of home. The title “Freedom” is poignant as you consider how the travois was later used during forced migrations of Native communities. Sharing here couple of many things that have touched and made an impression: a) Daniel Otero Torres’ installation (first two items on the post), engages with the ecological crises that affects the lives of Colombians. The work refers to how people of Embera community collect rainwater and provide themselves with unpolluted water. Affective, well-made, hypnotising installation that doesn’t require to spend hours of watching the art piece to understand it’s message and context. b) Aleksandar Denic exhibition at Serbia’s pavilion (3rd and 4th items on the post) – it extremely resembles ‘Origin of species. DNA of the 90s’ exhibition that took place in 2019, in The MO Museum, Lithuania, and that became absolutely cultic on a local level. It contained all the household pieces, all the contexts that were inevitable part of life in Lithuania in the 90s, that mainly came from other cultures. Very similarly, Serbia’s pavilion consists of different spaces that resembles the similar period, however, it looks to the similar topic from less positive perspective. It highlights the negative impact of these foreign cultural contexts and has a negative colonialist taste. Despite the oppressing mood - here as well I could observe how excited the visitors are about this exhibition, bringing them to their 90s experiences. c) Finally, Massimo Bartolini and Luca Cerizza who are representing Italy’s pavilion this year (5th item on the post) – for me one of the most enjoyable activities in this life is walking. It helps me to do the self-reflections of the highest quality.
