'The national pavilions offer, more than the Biennale’s main exhibition, the excitement of seeing a cross section of contemporary art, layered in conception and with relevance for what is happening now.' I picked ten pavilions that made a lasting impression, while overt political commentaries are avoided and instead imaginative approaches are presented, tailored to the specific site of the building, the city or the Biennale.  Published on Arterritory.com 'Knowing Where You Are' Selections from the Biennale's national pavilions @arterritory_com Images: 1 Croatia, Vlatka Horvat @vltkhrvt 2 Estonia, Edith Karlson @edith_karlson 3 USA, Jeffrey Gibson @jeffrune 4 Albania, Iva Lulashi @ivalulashi 5 Germany, Yael Bartana @yaelbartana 6 Canada, Kapwani Kiwanga 7 Latvia, Amanda Ziemele @amandaziemele 8 Greece .Kostas Chaikalis, Thanasis Deligiannis, Elia Kalogianni, Yorgos Kyvernitis, Yannis Michalopoulos, Fotis Sagonas 9 Italy, Massimo Bartolino @duequi.tohear 10 Romania, Serban Savu @romanianpavilion2024 #vlatkahorvat #edithkarlson #jeffreygibson #ivalulashi #yaelbartana #kapwanikiwanga #amandaziemele #dryland #massimobartolini #serbansavu #artbiennale #nationalpavilions #venicebiennale2024

By the means at hand by Vlatka Horvat, Horvat asked artist friends based all over the world to exchange works with her. All the artists she has approached live as “foreigners” in different countries, and she asked them to make a drawing that reflects in some way on their experience of diaspora. For every artwork she receives, Vlatka sends each artist a collage from the series she is making while in residence in Venice, using images she has taken of the city. All the works travel to Venice and back via informal transport networks; in bags and suitcases of friends, acquaintances, and sometimes strangers enlisted as couriers for the project. During my 8-month residency at the Croatian Pavilion, I'm making collages that rework images of Venice, which I'm sending to all the contributing artists in exchange for the work they have sent me. The works I have managed to send back at this point have all departed Venice in bags and suitcases of strangers visiting the exhibition, who offered to be couriers. Venice (at Hand), 2024. #venicebiennale2024 #vlatkahorvat

It has taken me a couple of weeks to catch my breath after the install and the opening of By the Means at Hand in Venice and am only now managing to sit down (before the visitors start coming in!) to post some documentation images. It has been an incredibly heartening and humbling experience seeing this project come to life, with the work and efforts of so many. I’m hugely grateful to the amazing team and to all the artists and couriers that have made the realization of this project possible. Thank you to everyone who has joined us at the opening, visited the pavilion in the last 3 weeks, or has sent messages of support. Hugs and love to all. One of my favourite pavilions and projects @labiennale this year was also the very first and last stop of our trip. It was a pleasure and honour to meet and spend time with artist Vlatka Horvat @vltkhrvt and her exhibit - by the means at hand for the Croatian Pavilon. @croatianpavilion2024 In her email sent to artist friends / collaborators / partners on this project Horvat wrote “By the Means of a Hand is a project of friendship and trustfulness. It centres strategies of improvisation and making do, and is built on principles of solidarity and mutual support”. Horvat asked 100 artist friends who were all living as foreigners to send her a piece of work that related to their experience living in the diaspora. In return Horvat would send them a collage she created during her time here in Venice. She asked each of her invited artists to deliver their work to her “by hand” not by traditional modes of shipping or courier service. Meaning that the artist had to find away to get their work to Venice by way of personal networks. Horvat then had to find someone to take her collage and return it to one of the contributing artists. This involving not just the original list of 100 artists@which has grown to 200 - but also the 200 personal couriers who continue to drop@off work to Horvat but also the random individuals who offer their services when visiting the exhibition. #artexhibition #contemporaryart #venice #biennale #biennaledivenezia #vlatkahorvat #processbasedart #friendship #worksonpaper #croatia

“By The Means at Hand” in many ways works against all odds. As one attentive visitor has put it - it is a quiet project that cuts through the noise of the biennial megastructure. It is not that the Croatian pavilion turned its back on the Biennial, the national representation and the art spectacle plummeting into the fragile Venetian lagoon. Rather, it is simply “doing its own thing”, by other means, based on friendship and solidarity, and does it, as Vlatka has put it in our dialogue for the project’s publication, by intentionally misunderstanding the task. Instead of shipping artworks from across the world, artworks by artists friends arrive carried by other friends and friends of friends, in pockets and suitcases. Instead of national representation, Croatian pavilion is an assembly of strangers, and a gathering of artworks that reflect the conditions of being a stranger, of being estranged. It is also a collection of the material remainders of encounters between strangers across the world. Instead of a grand opening, “By The Means at Hand” unfolds unspectacularly, as a collective process over the entire duration of the biennial; instead of being one thing it is many things at different times, instead of one artists it is many, many artists in dialogue and multilogue; instead of settling in one form, it is shapeshifting and fluid. In short, its identity is uncapturable. #croatianpavilion2024 #vlatkahorvat #antoniamajaca #bythemeansathand #biennalearte2024 @vltkhrvt @croatianpavilion2024 @username_m_m_ photos by @hugoglendinning

We have been completely overwhelmed by the amount of incredibly enthusiastic responses from artists wanting to contribute to the project, fellow curators, writers and art lovers visiting our tranquil space in Cannaregio, sitting down with us in the garden, and sharing precious thoughts about the multi-directional process of artistic exchange as it unfolds in front of our eyes. I have to say that this amazing response is completely unsurprising to me, as it perfectly mirrors Vlatka Horvat’s commitment, energy and brilliance that went into devising “By The Means at Hand”. One rarely encounters such a combination of emotional intelligence and unique artistic vision. The amount of love and attention we have been receiving from far and wide is also a precious recognition of the efforts of our small, all-women team that managed, with limited means and in a short period of time - to create a space of trustfulness, care, and genuine connection across many divides, and, in times of permanent war, raging nationalisms and neoliberal enclosures that never bypass the art world. #croatianpavilion2024 #vlatkahorvat #bythemeansathand #antoniamajaca #biennalearte2024 @vltkhrvt @croatianpavilion2024 @username_m_m_ photos by @hugoglendinning

It's already been a week since our opening! We wanted to express our gratitude to all our artists, writers, couriers, team members, collaborators, and supporters who have helped us realize By the Means at Hand. We would like to give special recognition to Luma Foundation for their generous support, Centrala for offering Vlatka a research residency to develop this project, and GAEP gallery and Unstable Object for assistance. This exhibition wouldn't be possible without support from Epson and Prostoria. We also want to give a shout-out to the great team of ReBiennale / R3B for their expertise in production. Additionally, we are very grateful to Medea Winery for keeping the wine flowing during our opening. And, of course, special thanks to Kerschoffset and Igepa Plana for working with us on our beautiful reader. Lastly, big thanks to everyone who has joined us at our official opening last Friday and during the preview week. We feel truly heartened by the warm response, and are excited to see how these connections carry the next few months as works continue to arrive, and Vlatka's collages make their way out into the world. We would like to like to congratulate our dear @vltkhrvt Vlatka Horvat for her project “By the Means at Hand” for the Croatian Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale. We are proud to share that it has been listed among the must-see pavilions of this Biennale by the most renowned art newspapers and magazines! For her project Vlatka Horvat has devised a structure of exchange between her and a large group of artist friends, who, like Vlatka, are “foreigners” in the places where they live. She asked each of them to contribute a small-scale artwork that reflects in some way on their experience of living in diaspora. In exchange, Vlatka sends them a new work made while in residence at the Croatian Pavilion, which doubles as the artist’s temporary studio in Venice for the duration of the biennale. What nuances this exchange is that all the artworks travel via informal transport networks; instead of relying on official postal or shipping services, the contributing artists ask friends and acquaintances (and sometimes even strangers or social media contacts) to become informal couriers for the project. The artworks travel to and from Venice by piggybacking on existing journeys. They might arrive packed in someone’s hand luggage, folded into suitcases, or carried in someone’s hand.

If you are in Venice, you can’t miss it!

Vlatka Horvat connected foreigners around the world to develop her exhibition for Croatia’s pavilion in the 60th Venice Biennale, curated by Antonia Majaca. I love how her ambitious approach challenges the notion of a national pavilion. It was such a pleasure speaking with her about her work. “Vlatka Horvat has asked artist friends based all over the world to exchange works with her. All the artists she has approached live as “foreigners” in different countries, and she asked them to make a drawing that reflects in some way on their experience of diaspora. Congratulations to Vlatka Horvat for her project ‘By the Means at Hand’, for the Croatian Pavilion at 60th La Biennale di Venezia 2024! Engaging with the theme of Adriano Pedrosa’s main exhibition for La Biennale di Venezia, “Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere,” Horvat’s project, curated by Antonia Majaca, will exist as an accumulative exhibition of artworks by a wide-ranging group of international artists living “as foreigners,” reflecting on questions and urgencies of the diasporic experience. Contributing artists to the project include the work of London-born, Zürich-based artist Sam Porritt.

As someone who came to the UK as a political asylum seeker and a refugee, escaping the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, it feels particularly poignant to reflect on what my experience means now, thirty years on. My drawing titled ‘Dijasporik Misćif’ began as a letter to Vlatka, then language(s) and words melted into lines evoking borders, maps, a heart-beat, maybe even a stock exchange graph, further melting into something far more unruly, uncontainable, unrepresentable, made with heat and not a small amount of mischief. ‘Dijasporik Misćif’ - heat on Electrocardiogram/ECG paper, 9x9cm x 18 meters, Margareta Kern (2024). Thank you dear Vlatka @vltkhrvt for opening this space for reflection and exchange so generously. And a special thanks to Jelena Sofronijević @empirelinespodcast for taking my work to Venice! Please join the official opening today/April 19, 2024, 3pm at the Croatian Pavilion 2024. Location: Fàbrica 33, Cannaregio 5063. I sent my friend Vlatka Horvat @vltkhrvt a photograph of the remaining bones of my grandmother after her body was cremated for her wonderful project at this year’s Croatian Pavilion in the Venice Biennale. Thank you @haeju__kim for carrying the work from Singapore to Venice! Dear dear Heman, I think you might have seen from my posts on social media: I’m working on a project for the Croatian Pavilion at Venice Biennale 2024. In a nutshell, I’m asking artist friends who are all foreigners in the place where they live – as am I – to contribute a drawing to the project. In exchange I will send you a drawing of mine. Basically: The project – titled By the Means at Hand – activates the kinds of informal networks that characterize diasporic experience. I’m inviting artists from many different countries based in different places around the world to exchange drawings with me. A key aspect of the project is that we don’t use any transport or shipping to realize the exchange. Instead, participating artists will ask friends and acquaintances – curators, other artists, writers, technicians, etc. – who are already going to Venice for their own reasons to become informal “couriers’ and bring drawings to me there, where I’ll be in residence for the duration of the biennale. In this way drawings will travel by piggybacking on existing journeys – packed in hand luggage, folded into people’s suitcases, flattened in books they are carrying. At its heart, By the Means at Hand is a project about friendship and trustfulness. It centres strategies of improvisation and making do, and is built on principles of solidarity and mutual support. The project also explores alternative logistics, spontaneous production of social relations, barter and gift economies. As well as being interested in the actual artworks that invited artists will send to Venice – a growing archive of works reflecting on diasporic experience – the project is also concerned with the processes of how these works got there: in the journeys, improvisatory strategies, systems of exchange and encounter, etc. #VlatkaHorvat #CroatianPavilion #VeniceBiennale2024 #HemanChong

It warms my heart to participate at La Biennale di Venezia 2024, “Foreigners Everywhere”. I am honored to be invited by Vlatka Horvat to contribute a drawing to her project: “By the Means at Hand”, curated by Antonia Majaca in the Croatian Pavilion. “For the exhibition, Horvat is inviting artists living in diaspora all over the world to engage in a series of reciprocal exchanges of artworks and other materials, all of which are sent between Venice and other places by improvised means, with the help of various friends, acquaintances and even strangers travelling to Venice, who are enlisted as informal couriers for the project. The title of the project—By the Means at Hand—refers to the improvised transport systems whereby individuals activate informal networks to deliver letters, parcels, documents, money, and other material goods to family members and others who live far away. While such practices are born out of social dispersal, migration, and displacement, the networks they give rise to build effectively on wider principles of solidarity, shared struggle, mutual support, and friendship—factors that the project emphasizes as prerequisites for co-existing with others, and as key elements in the toolkit for those living “in foreign lands.” Special thanks to Enes Quien for carrying my drawing from San Francisco over Zurich and Prague to Zagreb, Hrvoje Franjic who brought it to Venice, and Iva Gobic for coordinating it. https://www.croatianpavilion2024.com/ Anita Sulimanovic, “Home (veins), pen on photopolymer etching monotype, 2024 @croatianpavilion2024 @labiennale @vltkhrvt @antoniamajaca #croatianpavilion2024 #labiennaledivenezia #vlatkahorvat #antoniamajaca

Happy to contribute to this beautiful project "By the Means at Hand" by @vltkhrvt for the @croatianpavilion2024 for this year's Bienalle in Venice, curated by @antoniamajaca For her project for the Croatian Pavilion, Vlatka has invited over a hundred artist friends based all over the world to exchange drawings with her. All the works will travel back or forth via informal transport networks; in bags and suitcases of friends, acquaintances, and sometimes strangers enlisted as couriers for the project.

What all the contributing artists have in common is that they are all “foreigners” in the places where they live. For each drawing received, Vlatka will send back one of her works made while in Venice, via the same informal network.

The installation in the Croatian Pavilion will include a changing display of works by the contributing artists and Vlatka’s new collages, alongside various traces produced by processes of encounter and exchange.
Thank you @johannacharlottetrede for bringing my drawing in your suitcase! <3

Ahead of the opening of the Venice Biennale, Vlatka Horvat talks to ArtReview about representing Croatia with a project that is structured as a framework into which she is inviting other people. “Our exhibition quietly pushes against the organizing principle of national pavilion representation – it’s a deeply collaborative project that includes a large number of artists from different countries, living in different countries (…) The project activates collective energy to make something happen, rather than serving a single-author position. It gives centre stage to solidarity, friendship, and mutual support as principles that bring and keep people together.” — Vlatka Horvat (@vltkhrvt) 🔗 Read in full at the link in bio. 📍 Find the @croatianpavilion2024 in Cannaregio, Fabrica 33. — Photo: Hugo Glendinnning #gaepgallery #VlatkaHorvat #CroatianPavilion #VeniceBiennale

MEET THE TEAM Rebiennale | R3B Production Rebiennale | R3B Reuse, Recycle, Rebuild is a society of highly skilled and professional craftsmen, capable of intervening in each phase of the assembling and dismantling of artistic and architectural installations within all types of exhibition spaces. Founded in 2008 as the social initiative Rebiennale, by 2017 the project had developed into the company R3B, whose core objective is supporting the construction, disassembly and reuse of Venice Biennale pavilions. The team takes special care to safeguard and preserve materials, thus extending their life cycle so they can continue to be reused, avoiding the senseless generation of a huge amount of waste (not to mention the various expenses associated with its disposal.) For the 60th Venice Biennale, R3B has joined forces with the Croatian Pavilion to further minimize the ecological footprint of the exhibition. They keep pouring in! Everyday new artworks are arriving at the Croatian Pavilion at Fàbrica 33 in Venice. Carefully packed in bubblewrap, rolled in a tube, or tucked in a folder, these works have made the trip from all over the world using all manner of transport and prompting encounters and exchanges (and occasionally a pint or two) along the way. As the project grows, Vlatka Horvat will continue to document each handover and itinerary for every work that finds its way to Venice. These stories will be on view as part of By the Means at Hand. We look forward to welcoming you to the pavilion next week to see these works and follow their journeys. @vltkhrvt @antoniamajaca #croatianpavilion2024 #bythemeansathand #vlatkahorvat #antoniamajaca #BiennaleArte2024 #StranieriOvunque #ForeignersEverywhere
