𝘋𝘶𝘦 𝘘𝘶𝘪 / 𝘛𝘰 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳: 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 60𝘵𝘩 𝘝𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘉𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘦 The conception of the Italian pavilion on the occasion of the 60th @labiennale was assigned to one single artist: Massimo Bartolini. On paper, it should’ve been a one-man-show, but 𝘋𝘶𝘦 𝘘𝘶𝘪 / 𝘛𝘰 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳 goes in a completely different direction. On the one hand there’s the collaborative approach that characterized the production phases in which several artists and professionals were involved, and on the other hand there’s the title of the project itself, that by playing on the homophones “two here” (“due qui” in Italian) and “to hear” becomes an invitation to listen and consider the existence of the other. 𝘋𝘶𝘦 𝘘𝘶𝘪 / 𝘛𝘰 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳, masterfully curated by @luca.cerizza with the support of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture, is in fact a deeply introspective journey, but at the same time a collective experience. I’ve been to Venice before and I understand the labyrinth of islands and bridges and alleyways. I was prepared for long walks and heavy GPS usage and running my cellphone from a battery pack due to constant internet searches about art and artists. I spent weeks preparing for this trip- reading blogs and websites, making lists of works and pavilions I wanted to see, and scrolling social media for updates on the event and others’ experiences. Artist spotlight: Vera Molnár The late Hungarian-born artist (Budapest, 1924 – Paris, 2023) is regarded as a pioneer in computer-generated art and her work has won increasing recognition in recent years. In fact, the Centre Pompidou (@centrepompidou) is currently paying tribute to Vera Molnár with a comprehensive solo exhibition titled 𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘺𝘦. On view until August 26, 2024, the exhibition (see image 2) showcases Molnar’s various artistic practices, starting with her first drawings in 1946 through to a 2023 installation created specifically for this exhibition. It features an extensive body of works, including paintings, drawings, photographs as well as selected extracts from her diaries.
