Yesterday I visited the La Biennale di Venezia, 60. Esposizione d’Arte. Spent the day just going through the section in the Arsenale. Ship graffiti, once solitary etchings in stone, multiplied, transforming into a collective practice across the Maltese Islands and anywhere where maritime activity was abundant. Matthew’s gaze, akin to a mariner’s compass, traces contours of evolution and journeys across time. His eye-tracker in turn follows his gaze. The ship graffiti emerge beyond mere visual expressions but as testimonials of communal practice, intertwining religious devotion and artistic evolution. Their representation symbolises influence and connection, ultimately questioning the separation between humanity and technology. We are proud to present our project I WILL FOLLOW THE SHIP Malta’s Pavilion at The Venice Biennale 2024. Commissioned by @artscouncilmalta Delivered by the youngest team to ever represent Malta at the International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, I WILL FOLLOW THE SHIP incorporates contemporary drawing, historical references and digital technology, originating from Attard’s latest explorations into AI and digital technology as a form of drawing. The project takes its inspiration from Attard’s interest in historical images of ‘ex-voto’ (a votive offering of gratitude or devotion) ship graffiti, vernacular iconographies which speak of ancient local tales of faith and salvation across the Mediterranean. Located on the facades of wayside chapels throughout Malta, it is thought that these ship graffiti, ephemeral etchings in stone, were crafted by seafarers due to the religious significance and political immunity these buildings offered. These maritime graffiti resonate with many cultures whose relationship with the sea has been - and still is - crucial. Ce samedi je suis allé pour la première fois à Rouen afin d'assister en partie au Gaming Rouen et visiter un peu la ville. Ce fût une journée des plus agréables où j'ai eu la chance de croiser quelqu'un que j'admire beaucoup depuis mon adolescence, à savoir @fred_of_the_dead (j'ai jamais été aussi ému de croiser quelqu'un mdrrr) qui est d'une gentillesse sans nom. J'ai, également, enfin pu rencontrer ce très cher @superplayer02 , après tant d'années, qui m'a initié, sur (petite) scène, au speedrun any% de Zelda 3. Avec un temps de 3 min 11 je m'en sors pas trop mal pour une première fois 😁 J'ai ensuite passé l'après-midi à visiter Rouen enneigé, une ville vraiment très belle. Oserais-je dire plus que Caen ? 🤣 Et je ne peux m'empêcher de vous partager quelques trouvailles graffitiques dans la cathédrale Notre-Dame (déformation professionnelle 😅) - Graffiti n°1 : graffiti épigraphique en latin. Malheureusement je ne peux en dire grand chose par manque de temps et d'une photographie de qualité (les statues des saints disposés tout autour du déambulatoire ainsi que le regard circonspect des visiteurs ne m'ont permis de me rapprocher comme il se doit). Il me semble qu'il est inédit (en tout cas je n'ai rien trouvé de publié à son propos alors qu'il est le plus visible des plusieurs dizaines de graffitis épigraphiques médiévaux visible dans la cathédrale). - Graffiti n°2 : graffiti de bateau fantaisiste Celui-ci nous a, tout de suite, sauté aux yeux par sa forme si singulière. En effet, c'est un navire dont la coque serait un serpent ? Celui-ci fut déjà décrit par Michel Daeffler (spécialiste d'archéologie navale et également des graffitis). Il nous dit qu'il pourrait s'agir d'une représentation "plus symbolique que réelle, correspond[ant] à un type assez primitif de "hulk" que l'on retrouve sur les miniatures du 12ème siècle ap. J.-C."
