Yesterday I visited the La Biennale di Venezia, 60. Esposizione d’Arte. Spent the day just going through the section in the Arsenale. Ship graffiti, once solitary etchings in stone, multiplied, transforming into a collective practice across the Maltese Islands and anywhere where maritime activity was abundant. Matthew’s gaze, akin to a mariner’s compass, traces contours of evolution and journeys across time. His eye-tracker in turn follows his gaze. The ship graffiti emerge beyond mere visual expressions but as testimonials of communal practice, intertwining religious devotion and artistic evolution. Their representation symbolises influence and connection, ultimately questioning the separation between humanity and technology. We are proud to present our project I WILL FOLLOW THE SHIP Malta’s Pavilion at The Venice Biennale 2024. Commissioned by @artscouncilmalta Delivered by the youngest team to ever represent Malta at the International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, I WILL FOLLOW THE SHIP incorporates contemporary drawing, historical references and digital technology, originating from Attard’s latest explorations into AI and digital technology as a form of drawing. The project takes its inspiration from Attard’s interest in historical images of ‘ex-voto’ (a votive offering of gratitude or devotion) ship graffiti, vernacular iconographies which speak of ancient local tales of faith and salvation across the Mediterranean. Located on the facades of wayside chapels throughout Malta, it is thought that these ship graffiti, ephemeral etchings in stone, were crafted by seafarers due to the religious significance and political immunity these buildings offered. These maritime graffiti resonate with many cultures whose relationship with the sea has been - and still is - crucial. Maria is passionate about cultivating the art ecosystem, fostering cohesion between society and public/private entities through events, creative partnerships, and projects of national/international dissemination. She founded @mariegallery5 (2015-2024) and @artz_id Malta’s visual arts network (2018-2024). Currently, she serves as the President of Malta’s Entertainment and Arts Association @meiamalta. Maria has exhibited internationally in the US, Dubai, India and Thailand (2015-2018). She is currently collaborating with @omenaartfoundation and is a Cultural Innovator @salzburgglobal fellow. Yesterday, we officially launched I WILL FOLLOW THE SHIP - Malta’s National Participation during next year’s 60th edition of La Biennale di Venezia @labiennale and commissioned by @artscouncilmalta It is an immense honour to have been selected for this opportunity, and as I stated during my speech, I am deeply grateful to be working together with such a fantastic, talented and dedicated team. The project departs from the practice of eye-tracking drawing specific ship graffiti found on some wayside chapels across our islands - a practice that I had initiated together with curator @elysetonna during the exhibition #rajtmarajtxnaflirajt @vallettacontemporary__malta in 2021. This will converge with interactive notions of data and contemporary drawing that I had started to explore together with curator @saradolfiagostini during the digital residency hosted by @blitzvalletta in 2022. I am beyond excited to have such an insightful and powerful co-curation. Dear friends, I am honoured to share that I will co-curate the Malta Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, in team with Maltese curator Elyse Tonna and, for the first time in the history of the pavilion, it will be a solo show by a Maltese artist, Matthew Attard (1987). I have worked with Attard on several occasions since I met him in 2014, recently on a digital art commission for contemporary art centre @blitzvalletta.
