O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) Directed by Joel Coen • • • It’s been a joy finally catching up on some movies from the Coen Brothers. While I did like this movie, I would personally rank this towards the bottom of my personal list of movies from these two directors. It had a great story with some fun characters. My favorite side character was probably George Nelson (Michael Badalucco). He, like many of the other characters, was quite funny. The cast as a whole were fantastic on portraying their respective characters. I didn’t love the music at first but it grew on me through the runtime. I did really like how they incorporated certain characters and situations so that the Soggy Bottom Boys could form. It was funny seeing them become famous unbeknownst to the members. Another one of my favorite story elements in this movie was how a piece of information at the beginning becomes a climactic moment towards the end. I would explain more but I rather not spoil the scene. The movie also looked great. It was shot well and the digital color correction that gave it the sepia tone was done excellently. This was a fun one that got better as it progressed. Of this new Planet of the Apes series, which I cant believe started in 2011, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the 4th best of the series, but thats not a bad thing, it just has a lot to live up to. This one is set 300 years after the Caesar trilogy and follows young ape Noa, who on his journey to find and rescue his clan from the evil Proximus, learns about the legend of Caesar and also meets a human along the way that may not be what she seems. All in all, quite an engaging movie, with great motion capture and voice performances from the cast. The CGI is very well done, to the point that I forgot the movie is about apes as they seemed even more real than the humans. Phase IV (1974) Directed by Saul Bass • • • I never knew Saul Bass had directed a movie before. Like most, I knew him from his posters and title sequences. I heard about this movie a few months ago because Vinegar Syndrome released it on blu-ray with the rarely seen “preview cut” that featured a different ending than the theatrical release. That is the version I chose to watch and I loved it. It was quite the trippy experience and it frustrates me that some producer saw the ending to this movie and thought it should be edited out. The ending was phenomenal in a surreal and mind-blowing way. I loved how bold and visually stimulating it was to see. The movie as a whole looks great. The insect cinematography looks especially great. I liked seeing the different kinds of ants. I also really liked how most of the time that the ants are on screen, there’s this ambient score that sounded great and added a lot to those scenes. The story and characters are fairly simple but the visuals, score, and the ideas are what really carried this movie. Love Lies Bleeding (2024) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The second feature film from director Rose Glass. Love Lies Bleeding sees Lou (Kristen Stewart), a reclusive gym manager falls hard for Jackie (Katy O’Brian), an ambitious bodybuilder who’s heading to Las Vegas to pursue her dream. Their love soon leads to violence as they get pulled deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family. Saint Maud was one of my favourite films of 2020 (UK release year), so I was eagerly anticipating what Rose Glass brought to the table with this grindhouse, horror tinged, Thelma & Louise/Bonnie & Clyde-like, heated love story. Whilst it may tread familiar ground at times, as well as clipping a couple of jumpy pacing points, this was a gloriously steamy, striking, shocking and brutal feature, with a surprisingly sweet beating (bloodied) heart at the centre. The isolated small town and immersive late 80’s setting radiate off the screen, working as a near-perfect setting for this tale. You have the perpetually snarky, reserved and embittered Lou, who carries the weight of her domestically abused sister (Jena Malone) and creepy, criminal father (Ed Harris), leading to a constant battle with succumbing to her addictions (the quitting smoking motif is a notable character tic). However, it’s her instantaneous infatuation with the driven, outgoing and reckless Jackie who will do (and take) anything to get that no.1 position. This cocktail of gelling and clashing personalities shines through. Glass shoots their intimate scenes (both the tender and rowdier moments) with heated passion and a genuine sense of both romance and lust. The spiralling Coen/Tarantino-esque escalation of the darkly comedic and violent situation that they find themselves wrapped up in is executed effectively. Microcosmos (1996) Directed by Claude Nuridsany & Marie Pérennou • • • I myself am not a big fan of bugs but I was amazed at the footage captured of them. It was incredible to see how detailed these little bugs are. The way they were filmed made it even look like they were giant creatures. It was relaxing to see these bugs live their life and exist in a completely different way. Even the creepier looking bugs had me excited when they popped up on screen. I found this documentary to be a little funny too, especially the part with the beetles fighting. This documentary was a breathtaking watch and a great entry in the category of poetic documentaries that I’ve come to appreciate more. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The fourth entry in the Planet of the Apes reboot series and the 9th Apes cinematic outing overall. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set many years after the reign of Caesar, a young ape (Owen Teague) goes on a journey that will lead him to question everything he’s been taught about the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike. Unfortunately I didn’t get around to revisiting Caeser’s saga before this (I haven’t seen Dawn & War since their initial release) and I haven’t watched any of the original 60’s - 70’s features or the frequently critically maligned Tim Burton remake. This newest entry seemed to slowly emerge from the forest over the past few years (rumblings of a reboot becoming intertwined with Disney’s acquisition of Fox) accompanied with the main question being: “Will it live up to the superb reboot trilogy?”. Thankfully the answer to that question is a strong “Yes.” Clocking in at 145 minutes, this is the longest entry of the franchise so far, for good reason and it is paced impressively. The slower burn first act that transitions into a somewhat road trip structure that arrives at a rivetingly tense and action packed final act flows nicely does a superb job of establishing this new group of lead apes at the forefront. The weight of Caeser’s legacy hangs over the entire film (I loved how his story has become a powerful concoction of myth, gospel and law), but doesn’t hold this entry back from carving out its own distinct story. The focal point of the film is pretty much entirely ape-driven (I would say the only real negative element I have in terms of character work is that the couple of human characters can feel like an afterthought) which effectively immerses us into this world and emphasises that societal change to great levels. The various ape clans, humans referred to as “Echoes” and any trace of human society completely abandoned, closed up, overgrown and forgotten. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Continued in comments

The Graduate (1967) Directed by Mike Nichols • • • This was a good one. The iconic opening scene was just as great as I thought it would be. Despite them using the same two songs by Simon and Garfunkel, I was always into any scene that featured “The Sound of Silence”. As much as that song has been memed out, it worked great every time, especially during the opening scene and the first scene with Ben (Dustin Hoffman) and Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) in the hotel room. It added this feeling of sadness to those scenes that I really enjoyed during the first half of the movie. The story and characters were quite good and for the first half, I was really into it the movie. I think during the last half I started to lose a bit of interest.
