The Tube with a Hat (Radu Jude, 2006) I must confess to feeling generally rather disillusioned with the series of short films being screened by MUBI as part of their Radu Jude retrospective, with almost none of them being worth talking about on here in my humble opinion. This very first film, about a father who travels with his son to fix the family television, is a major exception to that. It’s clear that Jude had a talent for harsh and bittersweet neo-realist filmmaking before diversions into failed narrative experiments in his more recent short-form work. Total Recall (Len Wiseman, 2012) No surprise really that the Total Recall remake should absolutely pale in comparison to Verhoeven’s groundbreaking original, but it’s still quite amazing just how utterly uninspired and derivative the final product has turned out to be. This is mainstream Hollywood drivel of the highest order, blatantly stealing thematic and narrative beats out of most Post-Bourne spy fiction, and plagiarising just about every sci-fi visual reference to classics from Blade Runner to the Matrix (And of course it’s own source material). All of which is in service of such a thuddingly po-faced work, totally bereft of the fun, splatter, and high-end VFX work which ensured the longevity of the original. Not even a silly Kate Beckinsale or some semi-decent fight sequences from Underworld director Len Wiseman can salvage this worthless and pointless final product. Fast Hands (Alan Clarke, 1976) Finally managing to wrap up that Alan Clarke retrospective I did years back, with this mournful play for today written by Scum collaborator Roy Minton, about a young boxer who has the chance to earn some quick money in a fight with an experienced opponent. It’s a grimy little takedown of the world of amateur boxing, emphasising its prioritising of profit over the welfare of the naive young men desperate to make money quick at the cost of their physical well-being. It isn’t top-shelf stuff from Clarke, but it’s suitably scuzzy and melancholic, making for a familiar portrait of exploitation and socio-economic decline. Total Recall (Paul Verhoeven, 1990) The middle child of Paul Verhoeven’s classic trilogy of canonised works of hyper-violent and satirical sci-fi. And whilst it isn’t quite as alchemically perfect or thematically layered as RoboCop or Starship Troopers, this adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, is still a ludicrously entertaining piece of pulp entertainment. Staring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a construction worker whose virtual reality experiences unearths buried memories and an interplanetary conspiracy, this is a terrific work of plastic-fantastic action, blisteringly violent and gleefully irreverent in its political commentary. Innerspace (Joe Dante, 1987) Now here’s a terrific showcase of 80s VFX from a director who knows how to build a story around it. Joe Dante of Gremlins and Matinee fame easily made some of the most subversive and entertaining films under the Spielberg umbrella, and this whizzy delight about a test pilot who’s shrunk down to size and injected into a bumbling shopping assistant is no exception. It would be enough to see such amazing CG-work and Looney Tunes slapstick on full display, but Dante also manages to wrap it all up with a rip-roaring underdog story brimming with intrigue and espionage, cantered around a terrific dynamic between dual leads Martin Short and Jack Quaid. Cocoon: The Return (Daniel Petrie, 1988) However did they make a sequel out of Cocoon? I admittedly wasn’t a fan of Ron Howard’s sci-fi comedy about a group of pensioners reenergised by underwater alien pods, but watching this blatant cash grab certainly made me appreciate its initial popularity and critical regard. Whilst virtually the entire cast of its predecessor return, Cocoon: The Return is basically a tired re-hash begging for an excuse to repeat the same comedic scenarios and dilemmas without adding anything new to the mix, except for an early Courteney Cox appearance. Not a terrible film, just a pointless one, which is arguably worse, especially considering the respect Daniel Petrie has as the director of Raisin in the Sun. System Crasher (Nora Fingscheidt, 2019) An appropriately wild and frenetic debut that mixes childhood tragedy with pointed sociopolitical commentary. Nora Fingscheidt’s first feature, about a 8 year old child with anger issues struggling in the German foster system, is social realism cinema at its most purposeful and visceral. One enters into System Crasher enraptured over its critical yet nuanced examination of the systemic failings and individual good intentions of the foster care system, and leaves totally captivated by how it portrays the destructive quest of its protagonist for a permanent home and stable family. Fingscheidt’s capacity for disorienting low-budget filmmaking and her ability to draw out one of the best child acting performances of the century very much make her standout as a director to watch, and System Crasher a powerful work of contemporary German cinema. Cocoon (Ron Howard, 1985) Very much an 80s staple if ever there was one. Ron Howard’s Oscar winning comedy drama about a group of pensioners who find themselves rejuvenated by a series of alien cocoons is an unabashed slice of 80s sentimental sci-fi in the Spielberg and Zemeckis mould. Problem is, if you wanted some of that, why not go watch something by Zemeckis or Spielberg instead? Which isn’t to say Cocoon isn’t a bad film, it’s just that Ron Howard is too much of a modest professional, failing to really pull off the combination of big emotional swings and mesmerising VFX that these films rely on. Anu (Pulkit Arora, 2023) A melancholic meditation on the difficulty of ritual and tradition in a post-COVID world. This short film about an Indian widow whose move to New Zealand is made difficult by a stay in quarantine, captures both a mournful sense of loss and a sense of practical difficulty that comes with both the death of a loved one and a major move from home. Definitely a film by an upcoming director to watch, one whose carefully observed interior perspective makes them an exciting prospect. Young Sherlock Holmes (Barry Levinson, 1985) Very much a quintessential slice of Spielberg 80s entertainment, made when the director and his company Amblin were at the heights of their commercial prowess. His name may not be on the director’s chair (that duty going to Barry Levinson if Rain Man and Good Morning Vietnam fame) but this peppy and lighthearted Sherlock Holmes prequel has Steven’s fingerprints all over it, having more in common with Indiana Jones than Conan Doyle’s consulting detective, not to mention foreshadowing screenwriter Chris Columbus’ work on Harry Potter. Not that that’s a bad thing mind you, because terrific 80s VFX is along for the ride courtesy of some immaculate practical craft from Industrial Light and Magic, who pepper this to bits with oodles of pulpy dark fantasy imagination, including the first ever fully CG film character. I can’t say it makes for a convincing Holmes origin story, but it does admit that upfront, and makes for a fine throwback to the days in which our disposable Young Adult entertainment was this well produced and zany. I've been shooting on film for a while now, but I've grown to love the style and more interestingly, the process itself. #Film photography teaches you to think more seriously about the shot, the light, the camera settings - because you can't just look at a preview on the screen and then shoot it again (like with a digital camera). It's always a lottery with yourself, and that's why it's more interesting and a little bit more exciting. Every time you take a film to the developer, you don't know what's waiting for you there. But it's all the more pleasant when you see good shots and realise that "Mischief Managed! " 🌸 _______________________ Я снимаю на пленку не так давно, но уже успела сильно полюбить стиль и что интереснее, сам процесс. #пленочная фотография учит тебя серьёзнее обдумывать кадр, свет, настойки камеры - потому что посмотреть на экранчике превью и в случае чего ( как с цифровой камерой), тут же переснять, не получится. Это всегда лотерея с самим собой, и тем она интереснее и немного даже азартнее. Каждый раз, когда ты сдаёшь пленку в проявку, ты совершенно не знаешь что тебя там ждёт. Но тем приятнее, когда видишь хорошие кадры и понимаешь, что «шалость удалась» 🌸
