Never did I expect to read an enthralling mix of Murukami, the uncanny, and urban folk horror (it's possible I've just invented this term), but that's exactly what I read. I can't reveal too much, as the book is full of surprises, but if you want to fall down a mesmerising rabbit-hole, The Changeling will hook you from page one. Our protagonist Apollo, abandoned by his own father in mysterious circumstances, never expects to find such joy in his own fatherhood. But when he meets his wife, Emma, and they have baby Brian, this is exactly how he feels. Emma's experience of motherhood, however, is quite different. Ground down by the sleepless early days, Emma starts receiving disappearing, anonymous messages from someone photographing Brian. Later, as she starts to decline, she claims that Brian isn't Brian at all. Apollo, of course, doesn't believe her. He thinks she's breaking down from the strain. And then one day, he wakes up chained in the kitchen an experiences something unthinkable... Set in a sprawling, magical New York City, the novel follows Apollo on his quest - one which I can't quite reveal! What I CAN reveal is that the setting is enthralling, a version of New York at once familiar and strange, entwined with the themes and plot. I can also reveal that the characters are nuanced, that each one is deftly drawn and sometimes horribly real. This is a very MODERN horror and the anxieties the characters explore hit home. BOOK (+ SERIES) REVIEW The Changeling by Victor LaValle Apollo’s father disappeared when he was just a toddler, but the dreams he has had most of his life imply that there’s more to the story. Later, when Apollo grows up to marry and have a child of his own, his wife’s erratic behaviour might lead him to his own dark experience with parenthood. This was my third LaValle book and it cements him as an author whose work I will continue to explore. Lone Women is still my favourite of his works, but I enjoyed this one too! I can safely say that I never knew what weird and wacky directions the story was going to go, but I was continually engaged by all of the text’s strange plot choices. It often read like an odd, modern, Brothers Grimm-style fairy tale. However, it sometimes lacked a bit of cohesion, occasionally feeling like three different stories that were sewn together. With that being said, I wouldn’t recommend this book widely as its strangeness isn’t for everyone, but it was for me! 4⭐️/5 TV SERIES This was remarkably faithful in its adaptation of the novel. It only ever strays from its source material to show more of the perspectives of the characters of Emma and Lillian. Lakeith Stanfield is well-cast and carries the emotional weight of the story well. The ending surprised me initially, but less now that I know there will be a second season. I think the series works well in tandem with the book. It is better understood after having read it and offers up imagery that might have been hard to visualize while reading. Ultimately, if you liked the book, you will like the series. • #001 Second Sight Films • Ich denke viele Sammler haben ihre favorisierten Labels. Wicked Vision, Capelight oder Turbine gehören dabei wahrscheinlich zu den häufigsten Nennungen. Es gibt aber auch die schwarzen Schafe, wo einem die Veröffentlichungen aus irgendeinem Grund gar nicht zusagen. Nach und nach möchte ich hier über einige Labels schreiben und diese nach meinen Möglichkeiten bewerten. Beginnen möchte ich mit dem britischen Label Second Sight Films. Da ich nur Limited Editions in der Sammlung habe, kann ich mich bezüglich der Qualität nur darauf beziehen. Interessant sind bei den Veröffentlichungen die großartig gestalteten und prall gefüllten Booklets. Zwischen 40 und 178 Seiten sind diese lang und bei beispielsweise It Follows mit einem Hardcover ausgeführt. Die Specials auf den Discs reichen von Audiokommentaren über Interviews bis zu unveröffentlichten Szenen. Hinsichtlich der physischen und digitalen Extras bekommt man also einen großen Mehrwert gegenüber vielen anderen Editionen. Die Verarbeitung der Schuber ist ebenfalls sehr hochwertig, wenn auch teilweise etwas eng, so dass der Inhalt schwierig zu entnehmen ist. Trotzdem bevorzuge ich dies gegenüber einem zu großen Schuber. Die Artworks der Editionen sind häufig eher minimalistisch, was mir in der Regel gut gefällt. Trotzdem sehe ich an dieser Stelle die Möglichkeit die Veröffentlichungen noch zu verbessern. Die Auswahl der Filme von Second Sight Films ist sehr variantenreich. Neben Klassikern wie Mean Streets und The Changeling gibt es viele aktuelle Filme. Mir sagt das Programm sehr zu, auch wenn ich hoffe dass die Bandbreite sich noch erweitert. 05-01 Remembering John Meredyth Lucas, born May 1, 1919 and passed away October 19, 2002. John Meredyth Lucas was a director, writer and producer. He produced the second season of Star Trek: The Original Series from "Journey to Babel" to "The Omega Glory". Lucas was born into a Hollywood family, being the son of actor Wilfred Lucas and screenwriter Bess Meredyth. His parents divorced when he was 8 years old, and two years later director Michael Curtiz married his mother and adopted John. Curtiz got Lucas his first job in the film industry. Prior to Star Trek, Lucas had been the co-producer of Ben Casey and The Fugitive, two of the most popular television programs of the 1960's. Later, he served as producer, writer and director on many television series, including Insight, for which he received two Emmy Award nominations in 1972 and 1973, and The Six Million Dollar Man (produced by Harve Bennett). Lucas also worked as writer and director on Mannix, produced by Desilu at the same time as Star Trek. Producer Gene Coon, having a smoke at his office window, often spotted Lucas going to his car, and engaged in small talk with him. After several such accidental conversations, Coon simply asked Lucas if he would like to write an episode for Star Trek. Lucas, a life-long sci-fi fan, was thrilled by the offer, resulting in "The Changeling". (These Are the Voyages: TOS Season Two) Incidentally, Lucas replaced Coon as producer when the latter left the series mid-season 2. Lucas directed the final episode of the short-lived Planet of the Apes TV series, which featured Mark Lenard and cinematography by Jerry Finnerman. He also directed several episodes of Night Gallery, also occasionally photographed by Finnerman. That sets the tone and we get really eerie/creepy vibes for the remainder of the story. I thought it was okay overall, I enjoyed it once things started happening partway through but the build up was a little slow. I love Changeling folklore so I kinda stuck around for that reason. It wasn't the most exciting read for me though if I'm being honest. Nonostante il tema trattato, il film si Peter Medak non utilizza i trucchetti facili e soliti del cinema dei coccoloni a buon mercato, ma riesce a creare un'atmosfera veramente malinconica, accrescendo comunque la tensione fino al picco del violento epilogo. Raffinato nella messa in scena, composto nella regia e concreto nell'intreccio narrativo, "Changeling" è un bel esemplare di cinema sovrannaturale che racconta anche altro senza buttarla in becera caciara (che ci sta pure, eh!) Day off, so it’s time for a movie or two. I hadn’t big expectations but THE CHANGELING was actually really good. Solid ghost story, well filmed and well played. Wondering why it’s not more known, perhaps because it’s a Canadian movie? THE FOG. I love the atmosphere of this movie, John Carpenter is a genius. Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, and an excellent soundtrack! And in case you wonder, these are CED videodiscs, and yes, I have a player and that’s how I sometimes watch movies. QOTD: What else would you add to this list? I'm 34 I am still very ambivalent about parenthood. I know I need to hurry up and get certain, but it's something which fascinates and terrifies me in equal measure! As such, it really compells me as a focus of novels. "The Push", "The Changeling" and "Nestlings", psychological and supernatural horror respectively, do an amazing job at exploring taboo maternal fears in a fearless, thoughtful way. They both cut close to the bone in a universal sense that "We Need To Talk About Kevin" doesn't. "Kevin" is horrible and excellent in its own right, but at its heart - with its bleak grand finale - it is a very American novel. Meanwhile, "Everything I Never Told You" is a drama which explores parental love, and ultimately pressure, in an intricate, honest way. It examines the fraught resentment, hopes, and miscommunication at risk in any family dynamic in a way much more personal than "The Women's Room", which reads like a 1960s feminist manifesto! Spája sa Vám s New Yorkom nejaká kniha? . . Ja si v prvom monente spomeniem len na Kto chytá v žite, Žihadlá a moju srdcovku zo súdka historických romancí od Meagan McKinneyovej Levy a čipka. Román Podvrženec, ktorý sa v tomto veľkomeste odohráva tiež, sa mi teraz ešte drží v pamäti, avšak obávam sa, že nepotrvá dlho, kým tam zapadne prachom. . Je to totiž veľmi zvláštna kniha, o ktorej ani neviem, čo si mám myslieť. Prvej polke by som dala pokojne 5/5⭐️, tej druhej však možno sotva 2. . Príbeh rozpráva muž-tridsiatnik, ktorý v New Yorku hľadá svoju ženu. Tá je na úteku po tom, čo ho pripútala reťazami k rozžeravenému radiátoru a zabila ich spoločné dieta. . Román je kombináciou rodinnej drámy, temnej rozprávky, horroru a toho najpodivnejšieho podivna. . Sprvu je skvelý, rozprávanie o rozvíjajúcom sa vzťahu Apolla a Emmy, spoločnom živote a narodení syna, má iskru, je emotívne, úsmevné a hlavne pútavo napísané. Zároveň dáva tušiť, že tento zdanlivo obyčajný príbeh dvoch ľudí, je len začiatkom: sem-tam na stránkach prebleskne náznak akéhosi temného tajomstva z Apollovho detstva. V okamihu, keď Emma začne dostávať znepokojivé správy, ktoré vzápätí zmiznú, napätie stúpa a zhruba v tom okamihu román získa úplne nový smer. Kupodivu však čím hlbšie sa prepadáva do podivna a nadprirodzena, tým celý príbeh funguje menej a menej a aj konanie postáv tomu nepomáha. Hlavne antagonista a jeho jednanie je akoby postavené na hlavu... . Poslednú tretinu som sa len premáhala a po dočítaní ostala v rozpakoch. Nemám zvyčajne problém s podivnom, ale pri tejto knihe som zistila, že asi aj v ňom hľadám nejaký zmysel alebo logiku, aj keď sa to asi vzájomne vylučuje. . Táto kniha vo mne, žial, nenašla svojho čitateľa, ale ak má niekto v obľube temné príbehy a nevadí mu zabŕdnuť do nadprirodzena, možno mu tento konkrétny román ponúkne viac ako mne. Keď si odomňa však niekto najbližsie vypýta tip na čítanie, Podvrženec s najväčsou pravdepodobnosťou nebude na zozname mojich odporúčaní. .
