Up the ladder to the roof: I don’t often lead with someone else’s photograph, but the Albert Embankment is full of ghosts. This is WH Smith’s Bridge House, built on the Surrey side of Lambeth Bridge. Of course, it’s long gone, as is the Doulton HQ we looked at on Tuesday. Decca Records, another commercial giant of the interwar years, also had its head office here, and the building survives, stuffed with apartments and wearing a tacky new suit. In the midst of it all still stands the no-nonsense magnificence of the former headquarters of the London Fire Brigade, vacated in 2007 and apparently uncertain what to do with itself. This vast complex combined active operational management with training and staff accommodation. When it opened in 1937, weekly displays were given to the public showing rescues from the ten-storey training tower and other acts of derring-do. Three years later, it was one of the most important and consequential buildings in London. So I’m afraid my photos are a bit scanty today, but there was a brief time when this road was one of London’s most modern. All the buildings (and I’ve omitted Lambeth Bridge House) were built on land originally owned by Doulton. The Oyster Bay Post Office in Oyster Bay, New York was completed in 1936. New York architect William Bottomley designed this colonial revival structure to mirror the Oyster Bay Town Hall across the street. Inside are murals by the prominent American artist, illustrator and author Ernest Peixotto, depicting scenes in Oyster Bay from 1653 to 1936 when the Post Office was built. H.C. Ørsteds vej 54 Denne særegne bygning stod færdig i 1939 og er tegnet af Edvard Thomsen til dennes far, malermester Thomsen. Det markante funktionalistiske udtryk giver associationer til en af modernismens stormænd, Le Corbusier. I bygningens stueetage lå i mange år et postkontor, og de øvrige 3 etager rummede i alt otte et-og toværelses lejligheder. I eftertiden er pulterrum og vaskerum i bygningens tagetage blevet omdannet til en penthouselejlighed. Arkitekten siger: Med denne supermodernistiske bygning har Thomsen virkelig givet den gas! H.C. Ørsteds vej 54 må siges at være en fremmed fugl i nabolaget, med en super cool æstetik med glassten i facaden, elegante skrå altaner og trappetårnet som skiller sig ud både i form og farve. Spor fra brædderne, som har formet væggene, ses støbt ind i betonen, en detalje, som senere blev populær under den brutalistiske epoke. Farverne er dog typiske for den tidlige modernisme: hvid, blå, gul og sorte vinduesrammer. Rød er den eneste farve, der mangler for at fuldføre paletten fra De Stijl. Måske Thomsen her har været mere inspireret af de avantgardistiske strømninger fra Europa, med Bauhaus etc., end den mere beskedne nordiske funktionalisme der tager udgangspunkt i Stockholmsudstillingen 1930, som ellers var populær for tiden for opførelsen? Og måske vovede han at give den lidt ekstra gas fordi bygherren var hans egen far? LOPEZ BOATHOUSE, 1936, Iloilo city, Philippines 🇵🇭 Architect: Fernando Ocampo Eugenio Lopez Sr. constructed his lavish estate, known as the Lopez Boat House, in 1936 in La Paz, Iloilo. This Art Deco/Moderne mansion stands four stories tall and resembles an old ocean liner, featuring a tower leading to a viewing deck and a spiral staircase on the ground floor. Inside, the decor showcases 1930s-style furniture. From 1992 to 1997, the PAREF Westbridge School for boys leased the Boat House. In 2002, it was declared a Heritage House by the National Historical Commission. Brockman Memorial Hall, Snaefel Avenue off West Derby Road, #Liverpool. This was built in 1931 and named in memory of Rev. Ralph T. Brockman (1861-1925), vicar of the neighbouring St John the Baptist church for 30 years, as explained in image 3 from the Daily Post on 16th September 1931. The Hall was designed by Alfred Ernest Shennan (1887-1959) who was more well known for his cinemas, including the Carlton around the corner from here (demolished in the past few years). The Hall was badly damaged during WWII but the facade survived and the rest was rebuilt, reopening in 1950. Shennan, by then in his 60s, seems to have overseen the rebuilding as he’s pictured at the opening in the Daily Post article from 16th January 1950 (images 4 and 5). The Beatles played at Brockman Memorial Hall eleven times in 1961, promoted by Mona Best whose son Pete was still the band’s drummer at that time. The Echo advert for one of these shows (image 6) is from 8th September, giving the name of the building as St John’s Hall after the church. Images 7 and 8 show the band at the Hall. I believe the front of the building is now the vicarage but the hall is still in use behind.

CAIRO MANSIONS (c.1930) 🛕📍Bondi Beach. The expeditions that eventually led to the discovery in 1922 of the treasure of Tutankhamun’s’s tomb by archaeologist Howard Carter resulted in the Egyptian Revival decorative arts style, and was present in furniture and other household objects, as well as in architecture. The revival during the 1920s is sometimes considered to be part of the Art Deco style. The Cairo Mansions on Campbell Pde Bondi is a fine example of the Egyptian Revival style, despite some loss of integrity. It is one of the few original buildings on Campbell Parade to retain its original character and streetscape appeal. The three storey residential building, with shopfronts on the ground floor, features pilastered columns above awning, with elaborately moulded capitals. The bracketed cornice on the parapet is of special note. Some good leadlight survives in some windows. • Roxton • Is demolition looming for these art deco flats? The block of four was built in the late 1930s, and from the outside, appear in their original state, complete with double sash windows. From 1941 the building was owned by Joseph Dalton, who lived in flat 4 and presumably rented out the other flats. The building remained in his ownership until 1987. In 2013, a development application was lodged with Willoughby Council for the demolition of the building. It was proposed to construct a new five storey building with 16 units and approval from the council was granted. The building was then sold in 2016, but the development application appears to have lapsed. So what’s the future for these stylish apartments? There’s no heritage protection in place and Willoughby Council seem comfortable with their demolition. World Art Deco Day ushers in May as Preservation Month. Each time we send out an eblast and ask what Art Deco is in your neighborhood, this building comes up. Located at 2121 San Fernando Road in Glassell Park, this Art Deco/Streamline Moderne industrial building is still a showstopper - especially since tenants Ravenhill Studios spruced it up. The property started life as a lumber shed in 1923, but it was the man who started the Hemphill Diesel Engineering school that occupied the building in the early 1930s and 40s, who turned it Deco when he expanded the building in 1936 (using architecture firm Norstom and Anderson). Adorned with reliefs of modes of transportation, the building has served as a record pressing plant, gallery space, artists lofts and now a high end lighting business. We couldn’t be happier that it is in use and being loved. Hotel Astoria Det karakteristiske smalle jernbanehotel i fire etager, Hotel Astoria, er beliggende ved Københavns Hovedbanegård. Tegnet af arkitekt Ole Falkentorp og opført i årene 1934-35. Arkitekten siger: Facadens farve er en smule dyster, men formen er sjov. Hele hotellet er formet som et lokomotiv, et jernbanehotel i bogstaveligste forstand. Trapperne er tydeligt markeret som egne kroppe, der understreger funktionen. Det markante DSB-logo, står på toppen som en kølerfigur i stærk kontrast til den ellers så minimalistiske bygning. Til højre for hotellets hovedindgang ses desuden relieffet “Den flyvende kuffert” af billedhugger Svend Rathsack. Historikeren siger: Falkentorp tegnede Hotel Astoria for De Danske Statsbaner, hvor han på daværende tidspunkt var ansat på tegnestuen under overarkitekt Knud T. Seest. Sidstnævnte er en anden indflydelsesrig dansk modernist, hvis værker vi i fremtiden vil dykke ned i. At hotellet opførtes som en slags “in-house” opgave udført af Statsbanernes Tegnestue er både interessant og meget typisk for perioden. Det vidner om en anden tid, hvor planlægningen og udformningen af eksempelvis infrastruktur ikke blev sendt i offentligt udbud, som i dag, men derimod blev tegnet af en overarkitekt og dennes stab. • Vernon Hall • A large plot of land with a single home was bought by Coogee man James Sanderson in 1915. He subdivided it into small lots in 1925. Local Randwick builders Frederick Smith and Fred Pearson purchased this portion in 1928, taking out a private mortgage to fund the building of these flats. The address first appears in the Sands Directory of 1930. Smith and Pearson owned the property until 1941. Katholische Kirche St. Josef zu Lingen-Laxten. 1935-1937. Architekt: Dominikus Böhm (1880-1955). Baudenkmal. Nach schweren Kriegsschäden wurde die Kirche leicht verändert wiederherstelt. This is not Miami. The original Art Deco gem, the Odeon Cinema is located in South London in the borough of Beckenham. The grade II listed building opened on 22nd September 1930 as a Regal Cinema. Among the facilities on offer were a fully equipped stage, a ballroom, a restaurant located on the ground floor and a Wurlitzer Model F 2Manual/8Rank theatre organ. It was operated by County Cinemas and in 1936 was taken over by the Union Cinemas chain. It was later an ABC Cinema for many years and closed in November 1978 for conversion into a triple screen cinema. The balcony remained intact as Screen 1 with a seating capacity of 587 which re-opened on 21st December 1978. Odeon Cinemas Group took control in 2000 and proposed plans to convert the building into six screens. There was some controversy over the conversion of the ballroom into an extra screen, as this contained a great deal of the original Art Deco decoration and stained-glass windows. The conversion went ahead and the six screen Odeon re-opened on 19th September 2001. The former ballroom is now Screen 2 with 207 seats, although a lot of the original decorative details have been retained, they are covered over. Screen 5 is located in the former front stalls area, using the original proscenium opening, and seats 207. Screen 6, also seating 207 is located on the former stage. The former restaurant is now an extension of the foyer and is used as a coffee bar. This a metal art work from the entryway of the Hall of State in Fair Park Dallas. The Hallo of State is a historical Texas Landmark built in 1936 to commemorate the Texas Centennial and considered the “crown jewel” of the Centennial.
