Fashionably late (?) for the start of this year’s #thevintagefashionchallenge so I’m combining Day 1: Introductions and Day 2: Creating . My name is Kate (but most people call me Katie)—I love being in nature, sewing vintage patterns, all things Halloween, and San Francisco history. My husband and I are forever renovating our little vintage home that my grandparents built in the 1940s. We live with our kitty fur-baby and have our first baby-baby on the way🤰 . I tend to gravitate to fashion from the 1930s-1950s, but 1939-1945 is my favorite timeframe. I’m hoping this year’s challenge gets me out of my posting slump, but since most of my vintage doesn’t currently fit we’ll see how it goes 😆 . For Creating, I present the dress I made for last weekend’s Art Deco Preservation Ball. I knew I wasn’t going to fit into anything I already had, so luckily I was able to find this vintage Butterick maternity pattern. Sewn with stretch velvet for optimal comfort, it was a fun new challenge. . After spending a wonderful weekend up in the Bay Area for the @artdecoca Preservation Ball, I’m thrilled to announce the @alexmendham Orchestra’s San Francisco debut at the historic Filoli Gardens, for their fabulous Summer Stage Concert Series. We are going to be kicking off the start of their season Sunday 18th August at 6:30pm. “As the sun sets over the Santa Cruz mountains, relax in the Meadow with a drink in hand and enjoy the soundtrack of the glamorous 1930s and the hot jazz of the roaring twenties” We’ll be showcasing the music of the great British dance bands of Ray Noble, Lew Stone, and Al Bowlly, coupled with the hot orchestras of 1920s Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, and Bix Beiderbecke. @sunset_tower hotel- an iconic Art Deco gem of a building in LA. We spent our last night at this hotel because, Art Deco- it’s been on our list for a while and we were not disappointed. It was beautiful and we can’t wait to go back sometime. “Designed in 1929 by architect Leland A. Bryant, the Sunset Tower (as it was originally called) was a trendsetter from the moment it opened. Its dramatic setting on the Sunset Strip and elegant Art Deco styling, together with its proximity to famous restaurants and nightclubs of the 1930s & ’40s, contributed to its landmark status. West Hollywood has always catered to celebrities wishing to draw attention to their star power. The Sunset Tower embodied these aspirations, counting among its former residents Howard Hughes, John Wayne, Billie Burke, Marilyn Monroe, Errol Flynn, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Paulette Goddard, Zasu Pitts, and even gangster Bugsy Siegel. Leland Bryant specialized in luxury apartments, but the Sunset Tower was his crowning achievement. His work was predominantly in Period Revival, but with this building he proved that he was equally adept with the then contemporary Deco style.” - taken from the Sunset Tower Hotel website. We spent this past week down in LA doing some heavy lifting, meeting with a factory and visiting contractors. We also made a tiny bit or time to visit family, some friends and had all of 30 minutes to take a dip in the pool on our last full day. This place is all about the details. Some behind-the-scenes shots from our epic show at the STUNNING @oakparamount for the Art Deco Preservation Ball. I pinch myself that gorgeous theaters like this are my “office.” So incredibly grateful. The truth is - I gave up singing for years - convinced my voice just didn’t fit into the modern aesthetic after giving up opera. Years and years and years went by. Then - in a true Field of Dreams (i.e. bat shit crazy) moment- I decided to create this band expecting it to be a one-off show. A magical chance encounter on a subway car at midnight made it possible (true story!) And now - seven years later….Every day with this band feels like a gift I never expected. There's one place I've been dreaming about since forever and it just won't go away.. but that's just the way it is sometimes, dear Los Angeles. I do know LA has its seedy corners and these weird sewers that run through the city like concrete veins (RIP #SixthStreetViaduct, I missed to shoot you and I will regret it for the rest of my life. Life long in all the movies, commercials and music videos). LA of course is more than the Walk of Fame or the next random studio tour. If you're reading this and you're a wealthy, proud Angeleno – feel free to invite me to your crazy end of the western world. Maybe satisfaction will be the death of desire, but I guess I'll have to find out for myself. This is the famous Union Station in Los Angeles, inaugurated in 1939. Architects: John Parkinson and Frank Donald D. Parkinson. Original postcard caption: The main entrance to the new Los Angeles Union Station is a thing of beauty in its Spanish type of architecture. The front of the station extends for some 850 feet along Alameda Street, and the towering palms, combined with the rest of the beautiful landscaping give it a lovely appearance. From Gloria Swanson to Elizabeth Taylor ,the turban has been the staple hat for glamorous women around the world. Between lounging by the ocean to the red carpet, the turban brings an elevated style to any situation. Join us September 11th for an open studio session to create your own, one of a kind glamorous Hollywood turban. In this open studio you will create a hat inspired by old Hollywood turbans of the 1920’s through the 1960’s. Using a combination of experimentation, draping, and hand sewing you will create your own unique Hollywood style turban. This is an open studio supervised by our fabulous expert hat maker Marcy Frank. Each of the turbans will be hand-draped, sewn into place and elasticated, so it could be taken on and off as you would a hat, still with the illusion that it was wrapped directly onto the head. There is no one way to make a turban, which is what makes them so fun to make! As a bonus, we will also be making a complimentary hat pin to pair with your turban! After all, what's a hat without a hat pin? The Hattery will provide a model head, pins, thread, hat pin base and decoration, buckram base, and more. Students will need to provide their own fabric of choice.
