I just love when the historic details not only remain in a pretty reno, but are celebrated! This Spanish bungalow in a pretty pocket of Eagle Rock is a beautifully done retreat, but these are my favorite bits: 1/ Front porch with classic stepped arch details 2/ Stained glass LR picture window 3/ Calling the fireplace original, but is likely enhanced or redone. However it grounds the room. Frank Lloyd Wright had a prolific architecture career. Among his many notable designs in the Los Angeles area is the Ennis house. The house is one of four “textile block” homes in LA constructed with patterned concrete blocks that give a unique texture to the exterior façade. The house consists of an estimated 27,000 to 40,000 of these concrete blocks. Visitors may recognize the house and these unique blocks in films such as Blade Runner (1982). By 2005, the house rapidly began to deteriorate from earthquake and rain damage. The condition of the house became so poor that the National Trust for Historic Preservation listed it on America’s 11 most Endangered Places. Restoration work was completed in 2007 which included structural upgrades, materials restoration and new roofing. Spectra contributed to the restoration of the house by completing conservation of the textile blocks, window and door restoration, exterior cleaning, hardware restoration, and much more. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church •1948• Carleton M. Winslow Some information from the church’s website www.SaintMarksarks.la- Saint Mark’s Church was one of the pioneer churches of Glendale, founded in the late 1880s. When the Second World War ended, Saint Mark’s acquired a prime location at the southeast corner of Brand Boulevard and Dryden Street. On this spot in 1948 it built its present church building, designed by the prominent ecclesiastical architect Carleton M. Winslow. The first service in the church was the Midnight Mass, December 24, 1948. The chapel to the right of the nave was dedicated to those who gave their lives in defense of the country in World War II, including six servicemen connected to Saint Mark’s. The chapel altar is the altar of the old church first given to Saint Mark’s by the Women’s Auxiliary of the Diocese in 1903. Also brought from the old church was the marble baptismal font given that same year by James and Laura McIntyre in memory of their two infant sons. The furnishing and decoration of the interior of the church as it appears today were mostly completed by the mid-1950s. Over the years, there have been several additions to the interior decor, most notable being the painted triptych above the altar created by artist Rhett Judice and installed in the church in 2002. To provide a temporary parish hall, a former Red Cross building that had stood in Pershing Square during the War was purchased and moved to the site in 1948. It has been refurbished in the last several years and it currently houses the Yellow and Purple rooms of Saint Mark’s Preschool. The current parish hall was built in 1954 and subsequently named in honor of Dr. Parlour. The front cloisters were completed in 1962, finally enclosing the courtyard according to the original Carleton Winslow master plan.The courtyard was redesigned and dedicated as a memorial garden in 2004.” #Glendale

Here is its original location, which now houses the Go For Broke Education Center dedicated to “the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a segregated Japanese American unit, which is remembered today for its brave actions in World War II. When it’s thanksgiving and you have no family in LA, so you feed your soul with a personal project on a rare day without traffic. IWas able to get roam around the 6th street viaduct without worrying about becoming a pancake. This is the type of project that fills my cup. Architecture is for people and that’s how I like photographing it, within the context it’s intended use. Bridgets, parks, museums, plazas, etc. The old viaduct was a stable in the LA scene appearing in countless films, shows, and music videos over the last century or so. It’s always been eerily quiet and lifeless, though much of this section of Wilshire BLvd between Ktown and Miracle Mile is pretty quiet. Until this afternoon, I didn’t have a clue what it was built for. I lifted this from SkyscraperCity.com. It simply sums up most of everything else I read online about the temple.- “The Japanese style house of worship is the Los Angeles area temple for the Honmichi, a religious group headquartered in Osaka, Japan.
