From the Academy Museum I walked next door to LACMA. Still messy over there but the new David Geffen Galleries (which will house the permanent collection) is taking shape; I am still not crazy about the idea of stretching across over Wilshire Blvd, and it looks small, but I will wait and see when it should open toward the end of the year. Two exhibitions had my particular interest today, I knew I would love Ed Ruscha Now Then (A Retrospective) (thru Oct. 6) - the big wonderful surprise was Vincent Valdez and Ry Cooder El Chavez Ravine (thru August 11). Before there was Dodgers Stadium, there was El Chavez Ravine, a colorful neighborhood of misfits, immigrants and other “questionable” characters who owned their houses and went about their lives - until the day they were forced from their homes, to make room for low income housing, which they would be invited back to live in, NOT. The projects never were built and eventually, through trickery and high courts, the land was traded to the newly arrived Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers. This darker history of this historic team has inspired quite a few artists, writers, photographers, painters and musicians - the artwork on view now at LACMA by Vincent Valdez with ideas and music from Ry Cooder is mindblowingly beautiful, touching, shocking and simply amazing, can’t recommend a visit highly enough. Upstairs from El Chavez, there is more history, explored differently. This retrospective of Ed Ruscha’s work shouldn’t be missed either; few captures America, seemingly (but only seemingly) so simple, as he does. Retrospectives are always interesting, seeing how an artist develop , borrow, return; find inspiration and techniques- is always inspiring. Yesterday I spent most time with his later work, as for most of us, some worry for the future begin to appear. Continuing my Welton Becket dive, say hello the Equitable Life Assurance Society Building. This absolute unit appeared on the horizon in 1969. Built on the site of the former Chapman Park Hotel, the building was operated by Equitable (oddly enough). The company also purchased the impressive 1962 Lee Tower high-rise on Wilshire that same year, for around $6M. In addition, the New York-based firm owned the JW Robinson store in Beverly Hills, as well as a few Sears locations, and the Barbara Ann bakery in Pasadena. --- The new LA office of Equitable included Schrafft's first West Coast eatery on the lower-level plaza. Designed by Welton Becket, the 417-seat restaurant featured an African safari motif. In later years, the eatery was replaced by Boston Half Shell, where live Maine lobster arrived on a silver platter. --- Listed as the tallest structure on Wilshire Blvd., the $30M, 34-story building was lighted nightly. --- In 1977, Equitable purchased the bulk of Tishman Realty, a veteran of Los Angeles construction (with Tishman buildings lining the same corridor). --- In 1980, the building was purchased for $46M by a private equity group, and purchased by overseas investors in the mid-1990s.
