~ Patina Collection Inspiration ~ One of America’s most photographed houses: Historic Dawnridge Estate in Beverly Hills built by Tony and Elizabeth Duquette “Dawnridge” in 1949. After the Tony Duquette’s death in 1999, Hutton and Ruth Wilkinson purchased the house to preserve it. Most of the Duquette’s collections of 17th, 18th, and 19th century antiques and works of art were sold after their deaths in the Duquette Collection Sale with Christie’s. Hutton Wilkinson re-decorated the house using mostly furniture, sculpture and works of art created by Tony and Elizabeth Duquette. Today, Dawnridge serves as the headquarters for Tony Duquette Studios where Hutton Wilkinson serves as President and Creative Director. Clock made for the 1939 New York World's Fair. This fair was themed "World of Tomorrow" with a focus on futuristic cities and technology. Immediately this clock reminded me of the one in Metropolis, a German film depicting a dystopian industrial future released in 1927. Though the film is heralded as a time capsule of art deco design, its vision of the future is distinctly more pessimistic than the rest of the art deco movement, contrasting strongly with that on display at World's Fair.
Project| The Glasshouse Garden at 80 Strand is a unique flexible space located in a former light well. Double-height glass-framed spaces flank upper and lower corridors with vaulted ceilings, lit by warm custom spherical pendants. With natural light unable to reach ground level, highlights to plants and uplighting to the facades and green walls create a soft surrounding glow. As I discovered this past December while visiting Phoenix, the city's downtown is quite a diverse collection of architecture. The historic Art Deco-style Luhrs Tower was designed by Trost and Trost, and built in 1929 for George Luhrs, being one of the many grand early 20th Century buildings constructed during the second major period of population growth in Phoenix. The 14-story building, like many skyscrapers of its era, tapers in size, being smaller at the top than at the bottom, with symmetrical setbacks at the first floor, 8th floor, and 11th floor, giving the building a distinct appearance reminiscent of a ziggurat. While setbacks were a requirement in other cities, most famously in New York City due to the 1916 Zoning Resolution, the trend established by skyscrapers in those cities influenced skyscrapers in other places, partially due to the way that the forced perspective effect of the increasingly smaller floors made the towers seem taller than they actually were. The building is reminiscent of the unbuilt design for the Chicago Tribune Tower that was created by Eliel and Eero Saarinen, which was placed second to the realized design in the competition for building, but became influential in the design of Art Deco skyscrapers across the United States starting in the mid-1920s. The building remains in use today as an office tower, having been superseded in height by more modern skyscrapers in Downtown Phoenix.

One of the historic landmarks that I got to see in Phoenix this past December! This Art Deco-style building was constructed in 1928-1929 to serve as the Maricopa County Courthouse and Phoenix City Hall, and was known as the County-City Administration Building. The building was designed by Edward Neild and Lescher & Mahoney. The building incorporates Spanish Colonial elements into the Art Deco design, including a red terra cotta tile roof, Spanish-inspired reliefs, and Spanish Renaissance-inspired classically derived ornament and cladding. It is an example of a regional variant of the Art Deco style that was predominant in California and other parts of the Southwest, which mixed traditional Spanish influences, inspired by the region's history as part of the Spanish colony of New Spain, with the decidedly nontraditional style. The building replaced an earlier courthouse and an earlier city hall, which were both built in the 1880s and had become too small for the growing needs of both governments, a theme that would play out with this building not too long after its construction. By the end of World War II, the growth of Phoenix had reached such a point where the building was no longer adequately sized for Maricopa County or the City of Phoenix, and plans began to be made to build new, separate facilities for each. In 1963-1964, the new Phoenix Municipal Building and Maricopa County Government Complex were completed. However, the building remained in use for the Maricopa County Superior Court, as well as some governmental offices. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Today, it remains the home for the Maricopa County Superior Court, as well as the Maricopa County Justice Museum.

@sandboxfilms Office by @civilianprojects • @chrismottalini 📷 Civilian has overseen the interior design for the offices of Oscar-nominated documentary production company Sandbox Films. Housed in a 1920’s Neo-Gothic skyscraper in the Flatiron District, the studio's design references the grandeur of early European movie houses and Art Deco cinema architecture. The 4,200 sq ft space features a central reception area and bar, a conference space, private and open offices, production and editing suites, a mix of carefully-sourced vintage and custom-designed furniture as well as a state-of-the-art 22-seat private screening room. Inspired by their clients’ love for the craft of storytelling, Civilian has created a thoughtful interior layout and infused the project with a rich material and colour palette, reimagining the potential of a modern workplace into an inviting environment that supports a sense of community and promotes cultural exchange. Joseph Vance Building, 1929 Another Art Deco building in downtown Seattle to be fully clad in terra cotta tiles, this one has a warmer tan-color terra cotta accented with polychrome red and blue terra cotta trim. There is another Art Deco building behind the Vance on this block (1411 Fourth), but this is built of the more conventional brick and cast stone materials. The Art Deco design of the Vance Building is a more subdued and modest example of the style, but it is still easily distinguishable from buildings designed in more traditional styles. Note the fluted spandrel panels, floral friezes, stylized leaf motifs, and pier caps culminating in fiddlehead fern motif motifs and checkerboard patterns. The roofline has a more distinct Art Deco design, with a subtly stepped parapet. This 14-story highrise commercial building was constructed for Joseph Vance, a highly successful lumberman and railway builder who turned to real estate development during this era. Vance developed a few other buildings around downtown, all of which were designed by local architect Victor W. Voorhees. If you notice the spandrel panels between the third and fourth floors with central rose-color “V” medallions, these are in recognition of the developer, but could just as easily represent the architect.
