Jamaica Blue Mountain® - “A rare and unique coffee with special characteristics that set it apart from the rest.” When we told our taxi driver, Dennis, that we wanted to visit the Blue Mountains to see where the coffee was made, he said he would take us to his friends’ farm - James Dennis Coffee Farm. While we were there David showed us around the farm, explaining how they grow the plants and harvest the cherries. House by the lake with blue mountains Together with Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter discovered the picturesque town of Murnau on lake Staffelsee in Bavaria in 1908. For her, the enchanting town around the “Blue Lake” with the surrounding mountains and the fertile moor had a magical appeal. Her painting style underwent a radical change there. She says goodbye to the impressionistic style of previous years and delves deeper into surfaces, lines and colors, thereby finding her own expressionism. In 1909 Münter purchased a house in Murnau. Today known as the „Münter Haus“, it was then called the „Russian House“ because, in addition to Münter, Kandinsky, Jawlensky and Werefkin were frequently there. This four-person artist community is nourished by lively exchange and through mutual support and inspiration. Months of productive work begin and the environment develops into Münter’s favorite motif, which she returns to again and again throughout her career. Even after separating from Kandinsky, she repeatedly returned to Murnau, where she finally settled down in 1931 with her new partner Johannes Eichner. From the surrounding hills, she repeatedly paints the multifaceted landscape, which shows different color nuances depending on the time of day and the weather. “House by the Lake with Blue Mountains” is a wonderful example of these sophisticated depictions of the landscape around Lake Staffelsee. The landscape in clear, reduced forms lives from the play of strong colours in the evening light. That was tough! 4,378m of vertical gain over the 101km. Ultra-Trail Australia had it all - fire roads, single tracks, tricky technical sections, stunning views, cold temperatures… and relentless descents and ascents! My key goal was sub-20 hours to earn the coveted buckle, with a stretch target of sub-19. I was pretty stoked to finish sub-18 and within the top 45%, well exceeding my expectations. What a privilege to run my first ultramarathon on the trails of the mighty and grand Blue Mountains over the weekend. I’ll never be able to put into words what this race meant to me. The beautiful practice of doing something that scares the absolute shit out of you. Staring self-doubt in the face and doing it anyway. We all run with stories, with different bodies that tell complicated tales, we all carry baggage and beliefs. But when you’re out there, you have two choices. Keep going or give up. There is no where to hide. There are no distractions. There is no escaping. The only way to get to the end, is through it. It’s you against you. Not knowing how you’re going to get through it, but putting one foot after the other and leaning into the pain. Ultras aren’t about speed, they’re about endurance. Hard things take time, they take showing up and they take consistency. Sometimes our fear of failure stops us from moving forward. Sometimes our excuses and stories like to keep us in our comfort zone. But if you fail, you get to try again with a more educated outlook, and if you succeed, you will have done the impossible. Both are incredible. I’m so incredibly proud of the effort I put into this race. At the start of the year I hadn’t run any further than 5kms. And when I ran over the finish line, absolutely broken, I felt so strong. Because being broken, makes you stronger. The spirit and community of this sport is humbling and I would encourage anyone who is thinking about it to absolutely start an endurance sport, the cascading impacts on all areas in your life are phenomenal.
