This Art Deco/Moderne mansion stands four stories tall and resembles an old ocean liner, featuring a tower leading to a viewing deck and a spiral staircase on the ground floor. Today is World Art Deco Day (thanks to @artdecouk for bringing that to my attention!) I took this snap of Leaf on Bold Street last summer, I think it’s probably my favourite building in the whole city and reinforces that art deco is probably the most interesting of all architecture styles for me, the colours and the shapes are just unmatched and I wish Liverpool had more of it! 💙🩶

Today is #WorldArtDecoDay and I’m marking it with this beauty of a building in #Torquay. Built as electricity showrooms and offices in 1935, @historicengland states that the original drawings were signed by a W Marsden, with a reference to PW Ladmore, Borough engineer and architects’ offices. The metal windows were supplied by Percy Hope and Sons and had electrically operated sunblinds. Due to it being attached to Torquay’s Town Hall, when the showroom closed it was purchased by the council and is used as its public facing ‘connections’ offices for areas such as council tax and children’s services - the entrance for which was previously the ground floor showroom entrance. The interiors are said to be mainly intact and a quick peek through the door on the left hand side (the original entrance to the offices on the upper floors) revealed two beautiful pillars with original #artdeco up-lighters. This is not Miami. The original Art Deco gem, the Odeon Cinema is located in South London in the borough of Beckenham. The grade II listed building opened on 22nd September 1930 as a Regal Cinema. Among the facilities on offer were a fully equipped stage, a ballroom, a restaurant located on the ground floor and a Wurlitzer Model F 2Manual/8Rank theatre organ. It was operated by County Cinemas and in 1936 was taken over by the Union Cinemas chain. It was later an ABC Cinema for many years and closed in November 1978 for conversion into a triple screen cinema. The balcony remained intact as Screen 1 with a seating capacity of 587 which re-opened on 21st December 1978. Odeon Cinemas Group took control in 2000 and proposed plans to convert the building into six screens. There was some controversy over the conversion of the ballroom into an extra screen, as this contained a great deal of the original Art Deco decoration and stained-glass windows. The conversion went ahead and the six screen Odeon re-opened on 19th September 2001. The former ballroom is now Screen 2 with 207 seats, although a lot of the original decorative details have been retained, they are covered over. Screen 5 is located in the former front stalls area, using the original proscenium opening, and seats 207. Screen 6, also seating 207 is located on the former stage. The former restaurant is now an extension of the foyer and is used as a coffee bar. Esslinger and is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places, on the May 16, 1988. Esslinger Building is a one-story streamline moderne style architecture. Described by the AlA as embodying Art Moderne and hailed as “the finest illustration of the Bauhaus-inspired International Style in Memphis,” the building originally served as the residence of Maxwell McCall Millstead, who was responsible for developing a nearby subdivision and the Cherry Road subdivision in East Memphis. YATES APARTMENTS, 1934, at 801 Nanjing West Road, Shanghai, China 🇨🇳 Designed by the Chinese architect Luke Him Sau (Lu Qian Shou) Originally constructed as the Bank of China, Tong Fu Rd branch on the ground floor, with the Yates Apartments occupying the upper floors, this configuration remains unchanged today. Situated on a narrow plot adjacent to Nanjing Road W., the Yates Apartments is gracefully curved at its southern end. The building, accommodating both apartments and banking facilities, was erected on a slender plot at the intersection of Yates Road, hence its name, Yates Apartments. The architect’s skillful utilization of the limited space is evident, transforming a 100 square meter site into a functional area of 1,000 square meters. Finally I found time to visit the BBC Broadcasting House in Portland Place and Langham Place, London. The first radio broadcast from the iconic building was made on 15 March 1932, and the building was officially opened two months later, on 15 May. The main building is in Art Deco style, with a facing of Portland stone over a steel frame. It is a Grade II* listed building and includes the BBC Radio Theatre, where music and speech programmes are recorded in front of a studio audience. As part of a major consolidation of the BBC’s property portfolio in London, Broadcasting House has been extensively renovated and extended. This involved the demolition of post-war extensions on the eastern side of the building, replaced by a new wing completed in 2005. OCEAN TERMINAL, late 40s, Southampton, Hampshire, UK 🇬🇧 Ocean Terminal was built alongside Ocean Dock as a passenger terminal for liner passengers. It was opened on the 31st of July 1950 by Prime Minister, Clement Atlee, and the first ship to use the terminal was the Queen Elizabeth, the next day, on 1st August 1950. The last liner to use it was its successor the QE2, in December 1980. It was designed by C.B. Dromgoole, who at the time was architect to the British Transport Commission. The Art Deco-style Ocean Terminal, once considered luxurious, boasted a railway platform and 21 lifts connecting various floors. It featured six escalators and a visitors balcony along the roof, offering amenities such as waiting rooms, baggage areas, and shops. With media interest in celebrities adding to its allure, the terminal was a pinnacle of luxury at the time, complete with train services to London and facilities for luggage and ship stores. It measured 1297 feet in length and contained a railway platform on its lower floor. There were six escalators to deal with 4.000 persons per hour in each direction.
