Ir tik šiandien, gegužės 7 d., minime 105-ąsias pirmojo kariuomenės vado paskyrimo metines. Tikriausiai puikiai žinomas faktas, kas buvo paskirtas pirmuoju vadu. Tiesą pasakius, žinant šio kandidato patirtį, pasiekimus ir gebėjimą vadovauti, daug svarstyti dėl tinkamiausio žmogaus šiai pozicijai neteko. Be abejo, kalbame apie generolą Silvestrą Žukauską. Rusų-japonų ir Pirmajame pasauliniame karuose sukaupęs gausią kovinę patirtį, užsitarnavęs generolo laipsnį ir net vadovavęs korpusui, 1918 m. gruodžio viduryje grįžo į Lietuvą. Iš karto buvo numatyta generolą paskirti Krašto apsaugos ministru, bet dėl ligos pastarasis turėjo išvykti gydytis į Gardiną ir Lenkiją. Galbūt šią ligą galime laikyti viena iš aplinkybių, kodėl, vykstant aršioms kovoms už nepriklausomybę, vis dar neturėta kariuomenės vado. 1919 m. balandžio 26 d. įveikęs užklupusius negalavimus ir sugrįžęs atgal į Lietuvą, S. Žukauskas paskiriamas generalinio štabo viršininku ir netrukus, gegužės 7 d., tampa pirmuoju Lietuvos kariuomenės vadu. Šiose pareigose patyręs specialistas iškart imasi veiksmingų darbų. Gegužės 18 d. intensyviai puolami bolševikai, kurie rugpjūčio mėnesį jau išstumiami iš Lietuvos teritorijos. Interwar Poland (Obverse and Reverse) 1,000-Marka banknote from the former Second Polish Republic. Since the dissolution of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795, an independent Polish state had been absent from Europe. The rebirth of Poland can be traced to efforts by the Central Powers in World War I to establish a puppet Polish state in the previously Russian-ruled area of modern Poland. With the defeat of the Central Powers and withdrawal of Russia from the war, local authorities declared the intention to restore Polish independence in October 1918. The young nation engaged in conflicts with Ukraine, Czechoslovakia, Lithuania, and the Soviet Union in its bid to secure its boundaries and status as an independent republic. With independence recognized by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, Poland’s international borders were settled in 1922. After a few years of divisive partisan politics, Marshal Józef Piłsudski overthrew the government in 1926, bringing about an authoritarian system. Economic development was moderate, although the introduction of the Złoty as the national currency replacing the Marka enabled Poland to stave off the hyperinflation that gripped other European countries in the 1920s. Mass economic development plans helped Poland recover gradually from the Great Depression, although unemployment and inequality caused frequent social unrest. Unfortunately, the young republic fell victim to the simmering tensions of the 1930s. Hitler’s territorial ambitions, coupled with cunning diplomacy, culminated in the September 1939 invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, and the Slovak Republic, which split the defeated Poland’s territory among themselves. The fall of the Polish republic marked the start of the Second World War, leaving a Polish state absent from Europe once more for the next six years. Būtent 1919 m. gegužės 4 d. karininkui Pranui Liatukui pavesta Raseiniuose pradėti formuoti trečiąjį pėstininkų pulką. Peržvelgiant likusį pulko gyvenimą Pirmosios Lietuvos Respublikos laikotarpiu, svarbiausia paminėt, kad tas gyvenimas buvo nutrūkęs. 1926 m. pulkas buvo išformuotas, bet 1935 m. vėl atkurtas. Deja, bet antrą kartą pulko gyvavimą nutraukė ne prisitaikymas prie taikos sąlygų, o būtent karas ir sovietinė okupacija. German travel poster from the 1930s featuring Neuschwanstein Castle, a 19th-century historicist palace located on a hill in the Bavarian Alps. The poster was issued by the Reichsbahnzentrale für den Deutschen Reiseverkehr (RDV), a company founded in 1920 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn to promote rail travel in Germany. Initially, the RDV focused on encouraging travel from abroad, but later also encouraged domestic travel. Neuschwanstein Castle was commissioned by the Bavarian King Ludwig II. He built it as a monument to medieval culture, which he held in high regard and sought to imitate. The castle was furnished in a medieval style but incorporated the latest technology, and stands today as one of the most famous monuments in Germany and as a representation of German idealism. Ludwig II became king of Bavaria in 1864, and two years later was forced to accept domination of his country by Prussia. Today is #WorldArtDecoDay and I’m marking it with this beauty of a building in #Torquay. Built as electricity showrooms and offices in 1935, @historicengland states that the original drawings were signed by a W Marsden, with a reference to PW Ladmore, Borough engineer and architects’ offices. The metal windows were supplied by Percy Hope and Sons and had electrically operated sunblinds. Due to it being attached to Torquay’s Town Hall, when the showroom closed it was purchased by the council and is used as its public facing ‘connections’ offices for areas such as council tax and children’s services - the entrance for which was previously the ground floor showroom entrance. The interiors are said to be mainly intact and a quick peek through the door on the left hand side (the original entrance to the offices on the upper floors) revealed two beautiful pillars with original #artdeco up-lighters. Couldn’t let #worldartdecoday2024 pass without showcasing the Iron Duke. This stunning interwar public house was designed by AW Ecclestone for the Lacons Brewery. Saved from demolition by @pub_ironduke who as a group have campaigned for the pub’s restoration for the last 7 years. Sadly the pub is not going to be faithfully restored but carved up into an American chop shop/holiday let/escape room. Ignoring the pub’s true assets which are its heritage,architectural value and meaning to Great Yarmouth. Costing 2.5 million of public funds. The scheme does not reflect the pub’s heritage or have any connection to the art deco pub dedicated to HMS Iron Duke or Great Yarmouth.
