Earlier this week, we had the pleasure of hearing from Valerie Rice (@eatdrinkgarden) at our latest Medora’s Book Club. The author of “Lush Life”, Valerie shared the story of how her pandemic passion project came to be along with personal stories about her family’s travels and how each one influenced her “California dream of a cookbook”! Guests enjoyed samples of two drinks from the book, Strawberry Mezcal Margarita and Gin Salty Dog, and received autographed (and personalized!) copies of the book to take and enjoy at home. Moderated by Sheraton Kalouria (@kalouria), the discussion and Q&A touched on the vast array of foods and ingredients that are available in Santa Barbara representing cultures from around the world! . . #casadelherrero #georgewashingtonsmith #spanishrevival #spanisharchitecture #architecture #santabarbara #visitsantabarbara #santabarbaraca #visitsb #visitcalifornia #history #historiclandmark #nationalhistoriclandmark

The property includes three sets of elaborate 18th-century English wrought-iron gates, among the most ornate in colonial America. As you continue to circle the house, you'll be able to appreciate many of its boxwood additions. The land on which Westover sits was purchased by William Byrd I, "The Black Swan of Westover," in 1688. Renowned equestrian and businesswoman Frances Dodge was the eldest daughter of John Dodge and Matilda Dodge Wilson, who grew up at Meadow Brook Hall. As a child, Frances styled her bedroom as a way to learn the skills of a housewife - a role many young women were destined for at that time. She chose to decorate her suite in the American Colonial-revival style - which was popular in the 1920s and is the only room in the house with this aesthetic. The spacious room features many beautiful artifacts, a canopied four-poster bed, floral details along her closets and a delightful window seat located in a turret along the front of the house. #meadowbrookhall #meadowbrookestate #meadowbrook #matildadodgewilson #nationalhistoriclandmark #historichousemuseum #museum #puremichigan #rochester #m #visitdetroit #explore #visit #historicmichigan #thingstododetroit #thingstodometrodetroit #puremittigan #detroit #historichomes #thisisou #secretdetroit #travel #michigan #detroitevents See Frances' room and so much more on a tour of the Great Estate! The Jacksonville Jewish Center embodies the dynamic growth and development of the local Jewish community of Jacksonville, Florida in the 1950s and on. It is located in the historic Springfield neighborhood and consists of a community center and educational annex. The center, listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2021, served as a place to educate Jewish children and provided a haven where Jewish culture could be cultivated and shared for the local Jewish community. The center was a home away from home where religion, art, music, literature, and other aspects of Jewish culture could be nurtured and shared. Moreover, the Jacksonville Jewish Center was a melting pot where a diverse group of Jews came together to form a new community. Unlike many northern cities, where synagogues often formed around the country or even village of origin, the Jacksonville community was a diverse mix of persons whose families arrived at different times from many parts of Europe, South America, and the Middle East. By 1954, members of the Jacksonville Jewish community came from 38 states and 27 countries. In 1976, the Jewish Center relocated within Jacksonville. In 1979 it opened as the Jacksonville Job Corps Center. The Job Corps operated at this site for 26 years before moving to a new location in 2005. Recently, a private developer purchased the campus to adapt into apartment buildings. One of Kentucky’s first historic sites to achieve the distinction of National Historic Landmark was the Ashland Estate in 1960 predating its National Register of Historic Places designation in 1966. Home of Henry Clay, (1777-1852) he was an American Lawyer and stateman who represented Kentucky both in the US Senate and House of Representatives. He was the seventh House Speaker as well as the ninth Secretary of State, and ran unsuccessfully for President in 1824, 1832, and 1844. For his role in defusing sectional crises, he earned the appellation of the “Great Compromiser.” The Ashland Plantation began in 1804 when Clay and wife Lucretia eventually acquired some 600 acres to build the mansion named Ashland. Here, some 122 known persons were enslaved maintaining the plantation and growing corn, wheat, and rye, hemp and breeding livestock. The original Federal style mansion was built about 1806 and later additions were designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe. Following Clays’ life his son James Brown Clay inherited the house which had suffered from deterioration and likely impacted by the New Madrid earthquake of 1811-12. In 1854 the house was deconstructed and rebuilt entirely by 1857 with designs from Thomas Lewinski who designed the new structure with features of the original house: the footprint and foundation, floorplan, and massing, but Lewinski modernized the house stylistically. Henry Clay’s granddaughter Anne Clay McDowell and her husband Henry Clay McDowell purchased the estate in 1883. Their eldest daughter Nannette McDowell Bullock continued to occupy Ashland until her death in 1948. She founded the Henry Clay Memorial Foundation, which purchased and preserved Ashland. The historic house museum opened to the public in 1950 and continues to operate as a private foundation to this day sharing the legacy of Henry Clay and the Clay family and ensuring the preservation of the Ashland Estate. #preservekentucky #nationalhistoriclandmark #preservationmonth #historicpreservation #savingplaces #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #kentuckyhistoriclandmark @henryclayestate

Designed for the lumber baron and civic patron Aubrey Watzek when John Yeon was just 26 years old, the Watzek House instantly became an icon for bold, new regional interpretations of the Modernist movement. The Museum of Modern Art published the home in its 1939 10th anniversary book, Art of Our Time, with Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Jacobs House. Built from a veritable symphony of regional woods and inventive distillations of historical motifs, Yeon described the design as “a sequence of revelations.” #johnyeon #midcenturymodern #modernism #modernarchitecture #nationaltrust #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #nationalhistoriclandmark #architecturalheritage #historictour #architecture_hunter #architecturaldesign #architecturelover #architexture #architecturaltrip #architecturephotography #portland #oregon #architecturallandscape #garden #spring #pond #modernistarchitecture #modernistmovement #culturalheritage #houseinthewoods

The Santa Barbara County Courthouse Law Library is a jewel of a room, and the only room in the Courthouse designed in English Gothic Style. Among many striking features, the ribbed double-vaulted suspended ceiling filled with glimmering stars stands out. Reminiscent of medieval libraries, the sky and borders, along with the two wall maps, were painted by Giovanni Bautista Smeraldi, who went by John. The magnificent pointed ribbed vaults and starry skies resemble designs in the libraries of great monasteries throughout Europe as well as the Star Chamber of the High Court in London. Smeraldi specialized in Italian Renaissance revival painting and interior design. Born in Palermo, Sicily and apprenticed in Rome, he immigrated to the United States where he worked on Grand Central Station in New York and the Blue Room at the White House. On the West Coast, he painted ceilings in Spanish Revival style at the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel, Bridges Auditorium in Claremont, and Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

Lee Krasner (1908-1984) was an abstract expressionist artist who experimented with a wide range of styles and media in her work. She once told an interviewer that she felt painting was intrinsic to her being. Because she knew she wanted to live, she said, she always continued to paint. Krasner’s vibrant artistry was sometimes overshadowed by the accomplishments of her more-famous husband: Jackson Pollock. However, the Krasner-Pollock Home and Studio in East Hampton, New York, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994, is committed to interpreting both halves of the creative powerhouse couple. Krasner was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents, Chane and Joseph Krassner, were Jewish immigrants who fled what was then western Russia in the wake of war and intensifying antisemitism. Krasner’s Jewish heritage influenced her art, from the way she approached a blank canvas to the shapes and colors she used most frequently. Krasner and Pollock married in 1945. Pollock’s patron, Peggy Guggenheim, loaned them money to purchase their East Hampton farmhouse, away from big-city distractions. Krasner worked out of a bedroom in the house, and Pollock used the barn as his studio. Krasner experimented with mosaics and collage techniques, continually reinventing her artistic style. To learn more about Krasner, how her Jewish heritage shaped her work, and the the Pollock-Krasner Home and Studio, check out the link in our bio. Image 1: Portrait of Lee Krasner. To say I am obsessed with house watching is an understatement. Most of us are and this is evidenced by the tourism that sprouts around little pockets of the country where historic house watching is an entire economy. I hail from one of these particular pleasure pockets and I took it all for granted for some years until I landed in Los Angeles and had to reframe my eye to discern what was also considered important architecture in a slightly new way. As my mind expanded with the relocation and culture, these samples of architectonic harmony expanded in all directions. Now I feel fully formed and a moment in May becomes an important pause to consider all the work and industry it takes to perform these works of art. Happy National Historic Preservation Month to everyone! Come see our samples in the Hudson Valley. We all toil at this in earnest. 🏙️ This #TallBuildingTuesday, we're spotlighting the iconic 19-story Price Tower Art Center, also known as the Inn at Price Tower in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Designed by the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, it was completed in 1956, and is his tallest realized building. A few of our #CTBUH staff recently embarked on a fascinating tour of this architectural marvel and even had the opportunity to experience a stay in its rooms. Originally envisioned as the corporate headquarters for Harold C. Price's pipeline construction company, Wright's visionary design persuaded Price to build upwards instead of outwards. Crafted from copper and concrete, the building's unique form was initially conceptualized in 1929 for New York City but was unrealized due to the Great Depression. Its central core houses elevator shafts and structural walls, enabling cantilevered floors and expansive exterior windows that define its distinctive silhouette. In 1981, the Price Company relocated, and the building saw various ownership and uses afterward, including the start of public tours in 1987. In 2003, the Inn at Price Tower and Copper Restaurant + Bar was established, inviting guests to immerse themselves in its exquisite space, and preserving Wright's enduring legacy. The Price Tower attained National Historic Landmark status in 2007, further cementing its significance in architectural history. A large thank you to @price_tower and @amblerarchitects for the incredible tour! ✨ Images by @aausterm and @flaubert_snafu #PriceTowerArtCenter #FrankLloydWright #ArchitecturalMarvel #NationalHistoricLandmark #InnAtPriceTower

National Historic Landmarks (NHLs) are nationally significant historic places that possess exceptional value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States. Kentucky boasts some 32 of these sites. Today we turn out attention to Liberty Hall. Built in 1796–1800 by American statesman and first US Senator from Kentucky, Mr. John Brown and wife Margaretta, Liberty Hall is a transitional Georgian-Federal style located along the riverbanks of Frankfort, Kentucky. The house descended in the Brown family until 1934 when Mary Mason Scott, John Brown’s great-granddaughter and the last resident of Liberty Hall, died. She left the house to her brother, John Matthew Scott who sold Liberty Hall to a group of concerned citizens who formed Liberty Hall, Inc., a nonprofit organization to preserve the historic site. They opened the house as a museum in 1937 to share the history of the Brown family and this historic landmark. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was also designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark on November 11, 1971. The adjacent Orlando Brown House built in 1835 by John for his son, was occupied until 1955 when Anne Hord Brown, Orlando Brown’s last remaining descendant, left the house to the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Kentucky @nscda (NSCDA-KY). Today, the group operate both houses and the grounds as a museum. #preservekentucky #nationalhistoriclandmark #preservationmonth #historicpreservation #savingplaces #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #kentuckyhistoriclandmark

Majestic, isn't it? The building, not me. Although this double shot vanilla latte had me feeling majestic. Description of images: a #PublicHistorian enjoys an #ExtraShotOfHistory near the 1929-built Majestic Theater. It is #SanAntonioTX oldest and largest atmospheric theater. It is housed within a 14-story skyscraper (complete with a penthouse!). The inside blends Spanish Mission, Baroque, and Mediterranean architectural styles to create a feeling of being outdoors (cue irony). Examples include a starlit sky, floating clouds, hanging birds, and vines winding up columns (I didn't go inside, so Google it if you want to see the inside). The theater received renovations in the 80s, 90s, and 00s that allowed it to continue supporting large productions of shows, plays, and musicals. It is listed in the #NationalRegisterOfHistoricPlaces and is a #NationalHistoricLandmark. 📸: @freya66 #HistorianInRepose #SanAntonioHistory #SATX #PublicHistory #HistoricPreservation #Preservation #LocalHistory #CoffeePlease #MovieTheater

In Milwaukee this past fall, I saw one of the tallest load-bearing masonry buildings in the United States, which was the one of the world's tallest buildings when it was completed. Milwaukee City Hall was built between 1891 and 1895, and was designed by Henry C. Koch and Company in the Flemish Renaissance Revival style. The building features a 393 foot (108 meter) tall clocktower, and was the tallest building in Milwaukee and Wisconsin until 1973, when it was surpassed in height by the First Wisconsin Center, now known as US Bank Center. The building was constructed during the early years of the steel-framed high-rise building, utilizing a more conventional method of exterior load-bearing masonry walls, which get thicker near the base of the building. Given the logistical and operational challenges of such construction methods, it fell out of favor for large-scale buildings within a decade of the completion of Milwaukee City Hall. The building is clad in orange brick with a sandstone base, carved sandstone trim, one-over-one double-hung windows, a vaulted entrance porch at the base of the tower, masonry gabled wall dormers, and an eight-story atrium inside the building. The building today remains the seat of the Milwaukee city government, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2005.

Last Friday, we officially celebrated the commencement of the Gatehouse rehabilitation! We welcomed State Rep. Roni Green, Laurel Hill Board Members, members of our local community, as well as the architects and engineers working on this historic project. Over the next year, the exterior of the iconic Gatehouse will be rehabilitated, which represents another milestone in the stewardship of Laurel Hill as a resource for generations to come. This venture has been years in the making to preserve what is the last remaining building at Laurel Hill East, designed in 1835 by John Notman, and would not be possible without support from the Historic Preservation Fund of the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program Grant, and the William B. Dietrich Foundation. . . . . . #LaurelHillPHL #LaurelHillCemetery #CemeteryHistory #HistoricCemeteries #CemeteriesOfInstagram #WhyILovePhilly #NationalHistoricLandmark #HistoricArchitecture #PhillyArchitecture

WESTOVER PLANTATION - Charles City, Virginia, 3 of 3 - Architecture Westover, a colonial Georgian mansion, was built between 1730 and 1750 and is an outstanding example of this architectural style. The classic building features are the steep roof and paired tall chimneys. Included is the much-copied "Westover doorway." It has been designated as a National Historic Landmark in the United States. It was owned by the Byrd family until the sale in 1817, which helped cover the gambling debts of William Byrd III. In 1899, Clarise Sears Ramsey modernized it by adding hyphens and constructing a new library. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Crane II acquired the mansion in 1921 and carefully restored it to its original form. Today, Westover remains under the stewardship of the Crane family and is also a functioning farm. 7000 Westover Rd, Charles City, VA 23030 #georgianarchitecture #jamesriver #charlescityva #historicgardenweekofva #restoration #photowalk #historicpreservation #archaeological #westoverplantation #nationalhistoriclandmark #byrdfamily #stately #gardens #westoverdoor

Originally named Idlewild, the Belle of Louisville was built by James Rees & Sons Company in 1914. In 1931 she came to Louisville to ferry trips and later went into service for the war. Then, in 1962 Jefferson County purchased the steamboat for $34,000 in hopes of reconnecting the city’s people to the river. Soon, she was re-christened the Belle of Louisville. The steamboat’s purchase played a crucial role in restoring the Waterfront Park and Louisville’s relationship to the Ohio River. On April 30, 1963, Belle of Louisville made her first cruise in a race against the steamboat Delta Queen. That race was the beginning of a river tradition that continues to this day, every year on the Wednesday before the Kentucky Derby. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 the Belle was made a National Historic Landmark in 1989 as Kentuckys only landmarked boat. #preservekentucky #nationalhistoriclandmark #savingplaces #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #preservationmonth #historickentuckylandmark #historicpreservation @thebelleoflouisville

Today is the last day of our Celebration of National Textiles Day! Don't miss your chance to see samples from our historic textiles collection, exhibited in the rooms for which they were created. These delicate objects will be returning to their climate-controlled storage room after this weekend. The window treatments, furniture upholstery, carpets, and embellishments not only provide us with a window into textile craftsmanship and upper-class interior design tastes at their height in the mid-19th century, but also provide us a helpful roadmap as we endeavor to recreate these pieces to fully restore the Mansion's rooms to their intended design. Thank you to everyone who has visited this exhibition so far! We hope to offer opportunities to exhibit samples of the textile collection again in the future. At 12:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, the Fisher brothers would meet for their daily informal meetings in their 26th-floor reception room where Persian rugs, massive hand-carved desks, walnut paneling, bronze chandeliers and scrolled plaster ceilings lavishly decorated their suite. Today, the same suite is home to The Christman Company, which builds, manages, and preserves buildings like the Fisher Building, Michigan Central Station, the US Capitol, and other great masterpieces throughout the country. #thechristmanco #michigancentral #artdeco #artdecoarchitecture #fisherbuildingdet #fisherbuildinglobby #uscapitol #fisherbuildingdetroit #thenorthend #detroitevent #thefisherbrothers #thingstodoindetroitthisweekend #thingstodoindetroitwithkids #newcenter #fisherbuilding #detroitlove #detroithistory #historyofdetroit #detroithistorytours #nationalhistoriclandmarks #historiclandmark #nationalhistoriclandmark #detroitcity #bestinthecity #detroit #detroitmichigan #historicaldetroit #historicdetroit #historicdetroitbuilding #historicdetroitarchitecture
