Oto Mister Warszawy 1978 Służew nad Dolinką, totalna balkonoza wśród soczystej zieleni. Słońce pracuje tutaj cały dzień na to, aby o każdej porze dnia te fasady wyglądały inaczej. Nie jest to wielka płyta, a warszawski patent zwany 'ramą H'. Pozwalało to na swobodniejsze aranżowanie mieszkań, ponieważ funkcję nośną pełniły żelbetowe słupy, natomiast wypełnienie z cegły można było wyburzyć otwierając przestrzeń. Rozwiązanie ciekawe, ale bardziej problematyczne w produkcji niż standardowa wielka płyta, dlatego nie przyjęło się na aż tak wielką skalę. Początkowe problemy z brakiem usług czy słabą komunikacją zażegnano po latach i dziś wydaje się to bardzo atrakcyjną lokalizacją do mieszkania, przez niektórych uważaną pod tym względem za jedną z najlepszych w Warszawie. maison la roche was designed by le corbusier and his cousin, pierre jeanneret, in the suburbs of paris for a swiss banker with an extensive cubist art collection. the building consists of two residences - white cubes forming an L-shaped plan: one for le corbusier’s brother, albert jeanneret, and the other for their friend, raul la roche. the villa was built between 1923-1925 and represents one of the earliest and most significant examples of cubist concrete avant garde construction. it was also a precursor to the development of much larger and more complex projects that would fully incorporate le corbusier’s 1927 manifesto, “5 points toward a new architecture”: 1. Pilotis—narrow columns made of reinforced concrete—for structural support; 2. An open floor plan; 3. A free façade; 4. A roof garden, designed to incorporate the house more thoroughly into the landscape; and 5. Long rows of horizontal windows for the best uninterrupted view and natural light. the site was designated a UNESCO heritage site in 2016. today, maison jeanneret houses le corbusier foundation offices and maison la roche is a museum open to the public. i spent most of my time surveying the incredibly inventive details of the light-filled service kitchen on the lower level - a beautiful space that is rarely covered in the history books. thank you family for bearing with me.

Acland Burghley School is an outstanding example of a community school designed by Howell, Killick, Partridge and Amis (HKPA), one of the country’s foremost post-war architectural practices and built between 1963 and 1967. Its design ethos is based on historic trends of educational practices brought to life by its visionaries and architects with wings radiating out as clusters of teaching accommodation, each of which housed year groups rather than the more conventional houses which were prevalent at the time. The external façade of the building was imagined as a protective shell (from noise and pollution) but inside the buildings are open, connected permeable and transparent. In many ways this protective exterior makes the inner part of the school feel more like an oasis for learning. This sense of openness encourages social interaction, and this was very much at the heart of the design solution. At the centre of the playground is the Hexagonal Assembly Hall which was originally conceived and still is the focal point for school life and the wider community. Its emphasis is on music, drama and performance and is also the home of the @orchestraoftheageenlightenment as well as the home of the @museumofbrutalistarchitecture _ MoBA and the @acland_burghley_school_hall arts, culture and heritage venue. Thank you, @owenthomashatherley for this one: Craston House in Denmark Hill by Arthur Korn, a German-Jewish Modernist architect and urban planner, who taught at the Architectural Association in London from 1945 for over 20 years. Craston House was built in 1935-8, during Korn’s short association with FRS Yorke: it is, Owen says, Korn’s only remaining building in the UK - but, with its expressed concrete frame and brick infill, about 20 years ahead of very similar brutalist blocks, very often maisonettes, dotted around London not only by the LCC and GLC but also various boroughs, for instance Lambeth. Korn lived in one of the flats and was also arrested there in 1939: he was interned in the Isle of Man for 18 months, on account of his German citizenship and perceived Communist sympathies.
