Brought up in his father’s antique restoration and wood carving workshop, Alex Webb started making furniture from an early age. After designing and producing pieces for the high-end interiors market, he used his manufacturing background and artist’s eye to start Three One Four Studio in 2020. His influences include ancient Greek design, Regency, fine art, and architecture. On view! Mathieu Matégot and Victor Vasarely. A rare reunion of two pioneering Hungarian-born French artists, revolutionizing the use of shapes and patterns in the arts. One of the most celebrated French designers of the 1950s, Matégot was born in Hungary in 1910. After taking courses at the University of Fine Arts in Budapest, where he met Victor Vasarely, he undertook a long journey to Italy and America, before finally settling down in Paris in 1931. It was Vasarely who helped Matégot to settle in the new city, where he worked in several fields of the creative arts, including creating set designs for the Folies Bergère. Matégot gained true recognition in the 1950s, by inventing a new technique called “Rigitulle”. He created furniture pieces by using perforated metal sheets with clover patterns and small squares or round holes. Using a self-developed machine, he was capable of bending, folding and shaping metal sheets like soft fabric, giving him an unparalleled freedom of expression.
