Gropius firmly believed that the modern New England home had to reflect modernity, so he used materials such as glass blocks which were not available to colonial New Englanders. Yesterday I returned to Gropius House for the first time since the pandemic! It was so good to be back in this treasure trove (we even got to sit in Walter Gropius’ Eero Saarinen Womb Chair!). There are so many original Bauhaus pieces and gifts from amazing artists and designers like Frida and Diego, Joan Miro, and Marcel Breuer. Domestic moments from the Gropius House. — It’s been fascinating this year to have had the privilege of visiting both Gropius’ house in the Massachusetts countryside and the Bauhaus itself in Dessau. I’ve felt my understanding of Modernism become not only distinctly historical (that is, to feel myself drift from the contemporaneity of these works) but more empathetic to the social and political conditions through which it emerged. In its place, I wonder what architecture responds to today. We have few of the material transformations (concrete, glass, iron and steel) that prefigured the refashioning of architecture from the 19th to 20th centuries, and yet our world is alike in the intensity of its constant change. How does architecture speak to a cultural moment at which power has become more invisible than ever, and in which the fundamental postwar organization of the global order seems precariously at the edge of something wholly new? I've been thinking about all of the things I wasn't able to see this past year. Recouping from arthritis and a torn meniscus in my knee derailed some of my travel plans for my sabbatical. I thought it was high time to remind myself of all of the amazing things I did manage to see this year, much of it with some of my favorite people too. Seeing André Leon Tally's personal collection at Christies was without doubt the top highlight of the year for me. It was a real pilgrimage and I was so glad to see it with @debbieslittlesister. The Jim Henson exhibition at the Maryland Center for History and Culture was also really special because I got to meet Bonnie Erickson (who designed Miss Piggy and many other Muppets), and watch her install the Muppets in the show. I loved the Ann Lowe show at Winterthur and was so glad that @christinapday and I could bring some of our MICA students to see it. Visiting Walter and Ise Gropius' house in Massachusetts with @pasigraphy and @brocketthorne was magical, particularly with the beautiful blanket of snow. I also got to visit several museums I have never been to before, The Getty, The Huntington, and the Delaware Art Museum where I found this dreamy Paul Cadmus painting of his sister Fidelma. Of course rounding out my faves was the Dorothy Leibes show at Cooper Hewitt, the terrific Making Her Mark show at the Baltimore Museum of Art (go get yourself there Baltimore, it closes at the end of January), and the wonderful Bark Cloth show also at the BMA which I'm so glad I caught because I learned so much! One last cheeky shot fom the great ALT. Casa familiar Gropius. Walter Gropius, arquitecte. Lincoln, Massachusetts, 1938. Selecciono unes paraules de testimoni del text que Ise Frank Gropius, esposa de l’arquitecte, va preparar en llegar la casa com a patrimoni visitable. ISE (1977): El meu marit es va posar en contacte amb aquest constructor, Casper J. Jenny, de Concord, Massachusetts, i van decidir que farien servir l’estructura de fusta més abundant localment, recoberta amb plafons laterals de sequoia pintada de blanc i una llar de foc amb murs de maó pintats de gris. La idea d’haver de construir una coberta plana el va alarmar, senzillament perquè això no es feia mai al camp. Però ell (Gropius) va prendre la precaució de decantar la coberta lleugerament cap al centre, on un punt de drenatge, que baixava pel mig de la casa (…). També es va decidir que tots els elements estructurals i aspectes interiors, com portes, manetes, aplics de llum, lleixes, maons de vidre, etc. se seleccionarien de catàlegs a disposició. CASPER (1976): Tenia una limitació pel que fa als diners que podia gastar, ja que la casa era finançada per la Sra. Storrow i el Dr. Gropius li llogaria després a ella. Les seves idees eren d’allò més inusuals. Encara que feia servir elements en estoc, els feia servir de maneres diferents a com ho havia fet mai jo. Quasi cada tarda, uns quants dels nois de Harvard venien fins a Lincoln per fer un cop d’ull al progrés de la casa. Tots dos pensàvem que seria bona idea que a Harvard es demanés als alumnes de tenir almenys un parell d’anys d’experiència en la pràctica de la construcció abans que dissenyessin cases i edificis. Vaig estar d'acord a agafar almenys tres alumnes de Harvard cada estiu i ell va estar d’acord a donar valor a aquesta feina. WALTER (1938): Ara que és acabada la casa de Lincoln, sento que us he de dir com valoro altament la mena de treball que heu fet. Tot i que la vostra aposta per la casa era de llarg la més baixa, l’execució del treball ha estat excel·lent i la casa s’ha construït segons els terminis. M’agradaria lloar especialment el mètode de cooperació fluid, sense friccions, que hi va haver entre vos, com a constructor, i la meva empresa, com a arquitecte.
