Y como con cualquier otro ser querido, quiero entender a estos lugares, su crecimientos, su cambio, sus sentimientos y actitudes. Y a nivel visual, hay un lenguaje de patrones, pero es mucho mas que un ensamblaje símbolico de significativos. Son seres soberanas que se experimentan con todos los sentidos, tanto los reconocidos por la ciencia y los no reconocidos. Y además, nos experimentan a nosotros. Entonces nos situamos nosotros en el fondo de su experiencia o estamos en primer plano el uno para el otro? Entonces, mas allá de ser terrescenarios para nuestros encuentros, son caras enormes cuyos cuerpos se extienden por dimensiones del inframundo que no siempre somos capaces de percatar. Y cuando me miran estas caras, aún no se que nombre darles, solo se que me están mirando de vuelta a mí. Y que ese diálogo entre nosotros nos puede despertar partes inusuales, partes latentes. Partes que sirven para historias incipientes que de nuevas formas culturas que quieren nacer. Esas voces, si las oímos, nos pueden provocar respuestas que conllevan valores y perspectivas que la modernidad nos suele ocultar y dejar en el olvido. ¿Como mirar de otra forma, como expresar de otra manera? ¿Como tomar otros tipos de decisiones, como se mueven nuestros valores cuando compartimos en estos escenarios? 1970 - Scottish Ambulance Service building, Glasgow, Scotland, UK - Skinner, Bailey & Lubetkin. Category A listed. Originally home to the St Andrews Ambulance Association and Red Cross Scottish Ambulance Service. The two services were linked by an integrated lower block. The door between the two orgs has since been blocked up. Vacant since April 2011, ‘managed workspaces’ have been mooted. Skinner, Bailey & Lubetkin were originally part of The Tecton Group, a radical architectural group co-founded by Berthold Lubetkin, Francis Skinner, Denys Lasdun, Michael Dugdale, Anthony Chitty, Val Harding, Godfrey Samuel, and Lindsay Drake in 1932 and disbanded in 1939. The group was one of the leaders in bringing continental modernism to Britain. Lubetkin is one of the outstanding figures of pre-war British architecture – penguin pool at London Zoo, the Cranbrook Estate, and The Finsbury Health Centre, London. Awarded the RIBA Gold Medal for Architecture in 1982. He was behind the design of the prominent St Andrew’s Cross, part of the Scottish Ambulance Service building, which lights up at night. The figure of St Andrew on the façade was resited from the previous building which was demolished to make way for the M8 motorway. For me, this miso making setup is a perfect mix between tradition and modernity. When I see the umami rich paste and the rocks I think of huge cedar barrels in a small miso factory in Japan. On the other hand I see the practical food grade buckets that make weighing down and fermenting under household conditions way more practical and reliable. This way, the phrases could either depict the image they represent or convey the image itself. 1977 - 30 Cannon Street, London - Whinney Son & Austen Hall (later Whinney McKay-Lewis Partnership). Grade II listed. Designed as an office building for Crédit Lyonnais. One of my favourite buildings in London. To be fair I have quite a few, but it’s definitely one of them. Always looked to me like a ship that had surfed up from the Thames and settled on Cannon Street. The location was formerly the site of the city church of St Mildred, Bread Street, designed by Christopher Wren after the medieval church was destroyed in the Great Fire of London; the Wren church was bombed and destroyed in the Second World War. The site was one of the last bomb sites in London to be redeveloped. Six storeys with a raised basement. Its height was limited due to its proximity to St Paul’s Cathedral, and the high water table meant no sub-basement. Its shape was dictated by the triangular island site. Not dissimilar to the building opposite - The City of London Magistrates Court, 1 Queen Victoria Street. It could be construed as a modernist interpretation, or reflection of the opposite building. It was the first building in the world to be entirely clad with GRC (glass fibre reinforced cement), using a mixture of Portland cement with 5% alkali-resistant glass fibre as reinforcement. 1958 - Hotel Imperial, Copenhagen, Denmark - Otto Frankild. Originally the hotel had 190 rooms, today there are 304. It has a floor of rooms dedicated to classic furniture and design by the Danish designer Børge Mogensen. It’s home to the Imperial cinema, opened in 1961. This is the most famous of Frankild‘s buildings, which was also his last. Due to a disagreement with the client, he left the project before completion and disappeared and left Jorgen Buschardt to finish the interior of the hotel. He apparently settled in Mallorca, where he has had a secluded life and worked as a draftsman and painter. If he is still going, he will be 105 years old. In 1962, Buschardt opened his own design studio in the Imperial building, and among his assignments was the 20-storey Hotel Sheraton, now Scandic Copenhagen Hotel ( 1967 - 71).
