This patient’s journey is truly inspiring. At 39, she faced a BRCA2 mutation, a diagnosis that loomed large due to the breast cancer history in her family. With both her maternal grandmother and great aunt having battled breast cancer, her mother’s discovery of the mutation urged her to undergo testing. Opting for nipple-sparing mastectomies, she aimed to preserve her natural appearance while also desiring a slight increase in size from her B cup. Her journey began with nipple-sparing mastectomies and pre-pectoral reconstruction using tissue expanders in November. Over the following weeks, she underwent a gradual expansion process to prepare for her final reconstruction. In January, she moved forward with the second stage of her reconstruction journey, exchanging the expanders for Natrelle SoftTouch 605 cc silicone implants. Additionally, she underwent fat grafting to enhance the upper aspects of both breasts, ensuring a natural and balanced appearance. She is pictured here at 8 weeks post-surgery and she is delighted with the size and shape of her reconstructed breasts. One of the most annoying things about cancer is all the logistics. In particular, I hate the blood test. Every three weeks, before my chemo, I have to have blood tests. Without them I'm not allowed to proceed. I could come 2 hours before chemo but I'm not keen on the early morning and long day. The day before is best, because if you come too early, your blood levels might not be strong enough for treatment meaning you'll be back at the lab the next day anyway. My blood tests are at the hospital. I chose this over the private blood labs around because it's actually easier where I live... With one exception parking. Every week I play a little game: how much will parking cost? Now, here's a hospital frequent flyer tip for you - they often have parking passes available which are cheaper with in and out privileges. My parking pass averages to $7 per day of use. I have to insert it at entry and then again to leave. Now, it happens rarely that I wait long enough for my blood draw that I'm gifted an $8.50 parking fee, so I don't use my pass to enter, but once I'm in, the time clock starts. Will I get my blood drawn fast enough for the ultimate free parking 15 minutes? Possible, but it's only happened twice. Most likely, I'll pay the $4.50 parking fee, justifying my decision to not use the passes... After establishing with a new oncologist down here in NM and after another mammogram and round of blood work, everything looks normal and clear and I can stop taking hormone therapy. So my treatment's finally over. As cancers go, mine was pretty minor. And my greatest fear is not for me, but for Ray. My hope is that he won't have to deal with it at all. But I'll definitely be on him to start screening early, as early detection is definitely the best strategy. So ladies, don't put off those mammograms. #breastcancerawareness #breastcancersurvivor
