(It's fine now and I'm out of excuses.) Round 6, Day 5 Pain. I don't have a pic for these aches and pains, so here is a gnarly old tree that I like, and that looks like I feel right now. The new chemo drug (Paclitaxol) gives me pain in my back, hips, knees, and sometimes other places. It feels like after going on a really long, arduous hike when you've pushed yourself too far, but without the endorphin rush. I also have numbness in my toes and fingertips because it causes temporary (hopefully) nerve damage. These side effects set in around day 3 and last for 4 or 5 days. Pain killers don't work very well on it, and this time, the Claritin isn't stopping it either. Sleep is difficult; no position is comfortable. Hopefully, it will ease by the end of the weekend like last time. We will see. #chemo #sideeffects #feelingoldandgnarly #breastcancer #getyourmammogram

If you are 40-49, did you know you're entitled to have a mammogram if you want it. Absolutely! According to the Canadian breast screening guidelines given to your health care provider, it is your decision to screen. If you live in a province where you need a requisition, it is your right to get that requisition. We know there are women who have been refused a requisition but that is flat out wrong and unethical. We want to make sure this does not happen again to any Canadian woman. Please check out our conversation tips (Link in bio) if you would like a requisition and live in the other provinces. One of the greatest gifts I received this Mother’s Day was seeing our son honored with the Roland Maye Student of the Year Award from the Junior Kappa League organization. This days for you momma, to honor the fight you bravely fought ❤️ My mom “Tammy” was first diagnosed with Breast Cancer at the age of 40. She was cancer free for 19 years before her Breast Cancer returned with a vengeance at the age of 59. She fought bravely for a year until she succumbed to the disease on October 2, 2023. My mom was always so proactive with her health and her getting screened for Breast Cancer at the age of 40 is how our family had another 19 healthy years with her. As the Director for Population Health and Quality Improvement at Family Health Centers, my mom’s death motivated me to get more mothers their breast cancer screening, so no other children have to go through losing their mother to such a horrible disease. Immense gratitude to all who prayed and kept me in their thoughts. I felt your love and energy all around me yesterday. Yes, the news is good. The blip was an error. It seems the girls are just fine. Nothing wrong with them, no masses, no calcifications, just 51 year old breasts that were apparently placed on the plate in a manner that gave the appearance of a problem. Let's not be the first appointment of the day on a Monday. I need my tata smasher to be fully awake 😉 mistakes are scary. While I'm breathing a huge sigh of relief and grateful for this news. For many women, though, breast cancer is real. A number of you reached out and shared your journeys. I'm honored to have been given the privilege to hear your stories and honor you as survivors. My prayers are with all who are navigating the world of breast cancer. Yes, I'm happy and okay, but truthfully, I'm not okay. This experience and the past three weeks opened up all the trauma and pain of losing both my parents because their medical concerns were not taken seriously early enough. The health-care systems inability to hear people often leads to Black folks disproportionately dying early. Even having the mistake explained to me by the radiologist has filled me with fear and rage and only served to heighten my mistrust of health-care professionals. Because now, I must trust that what they thought was an issue, but are now saying was never there is the truth. Lastly, yes, as women, we may have these blips, but when a friend is dealing with a possible cancer scare, please hear them. Please. Many well-intentioned people were dismissive, and honestly, it hurt. I just love my completed sampler! I used words from “Oh What a Beautiful Morning” from the musical Oklahoma for the personalization. (Lyrics by Oscar Hannetstein II). I left out one digit in the “n” in sounds and it fit perfectly. The right side by the barn looked a little bare, so I added my initials and date - though the over one was a bit of a bear! And what did I do to celebrate? Well, friends, I got a mammogram! It was good to cross that off my todo list. My husband and I love musicals, so a quote from a musical was a perfect fit. Had my mammogram last week and it almost didn’t go well. I got a call back for 3 new spots…after a second scan and 4 additional scans and a looong ultrasound,all in one morning, it turned out to be just fine. I was really getting scared about half way through as they kept consulting the dr. and coming in and out for 1 more scan over and over, BUT the girls are good! Thank heavens. I have a family history of BC and I never miss mine~but this one got real. So, ladies, and to whomever may see this~ GET CHECKED! Today I am one year cancer free…again! After three years cancer free, mine came back. It is rare but it does happen. I had been working out and thought I pulled something. The ridge-like lump didn’t go away and continued to hurt. After a few weeks I got it checked out and thank goodness I did! Don’t discredit your gut ladies. You know yourself better than anyone. I go see my breast surgeon for my 6-month checkup later this month so…fingers crossed all is well. Get your mammograms, do monthly self checks to recognize changes, and most of all advocate for yourself. You’ve got this. On a side note, this is still my best selling card. I hate that but I am also so grateful I can provide a laugh or a smile when someone really needs it!
