Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933) added the Daffodil Terrace at Laurelton Hall, his Long Island country estate, in about 1915. The 18-by-32-foot outdoor room exemplified Tiffany's unique and dramatic style. Each of the column capitals is decorated with a bouquet of glass daffodil blossoms. Each flower was created from twelve different molds using individual petals and corona to achieve the most life-like appearance possible. The stems are glass mosaics. Last week in our core module, Mediating Objects, we visited @the_keep_archives to look at some of the fascinating material held in the @massobsarchive Mass Observation is “an archive of everyday life, thought and feeling in Britain” that was established in 1937. We examined photographs of street scenes from interwar Bolton, reflections on thrift and waste from the 1980s, and opinions about personal appearance from the late 1930s. Let’s explore the timeless elegance of the Arts & Crafts Movement! This remarkable period of design originated in late 19th-century Britain, rebelling against the impersonal industrial mass production to honor the values of craftsmanship infused with medieval and folk influences. As historian H. Allen Brooks eloquently said, “Arts and crafts was a movement and not a style. It was an attitude, an approach to a problem that advocated no specific vocabulary of forms. It pleaded for simplicity, elimination, and respect for materials. Its most salutary effect, in retrospect, was the purification of public taste.” This movement profoundly influenced architecture, giving rise to charming Craftsman-style homes with their cozy woodwork and welcoming porches.
