Val D’Amour Apartment Building •1928• C.W. Powers From www.WaterAndPower.org- “The six-story apartment building, designed by C.W. Powers, was built in 1928. In 2007, the Val D’Amour Apartment Building was dedicated as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 875 This example of the Zigzag (Art Deco) Moderne, exhibits a wide array of characteristic cast ornament. At each side of the entrance two kneeling male figures (in relief) hold the heavy and elaborate ornament entablature on their shoulders and back. Other cast concrete decorative works occur in the recessed spandrels and upon the principal parapet. The vertical row of open fire escape balconies provide additional areas of sculpture and the major vertical piers terminate above the roof in stylized male figures.” #Koreatown #WilshireCenter . . . . . #oldhollywood #historicbuilding #artdecobuilding #apartment #losangeles #lostinla #cityofangels #oldhollywoodglamour #deserve2preserve #chasing_facades #discoverla #apartmentdecor #architecture #visitcalifornia #apartmentliving #architecturephotograhy #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #artdecoarchitecture #deco #artdeco #artdecostyle #artdéco #accidentallywesanderson #zigzag

If you’re at all familiar with Forest Lawn Cemetery Glendale, you probably already know or won’t be surprised to learn that there is a replica of Edvard Eriksen’s famous 1913 Little Mermaid sculpture in Copenhagen. There are a lot of great replicas within Forest Lawn Glendale’s 300 acre grounds. The plaque on the statue reads “ In memory of Nina S .Garason from her daughter Greer. From MermaidsOnEarth.com- “British actress Greer Garson placed a copy of Denmark’s statue of The Little Mermaid at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, in memory of her mother.” Back at home, my own Little Mermaid paperweight now has a Ryōan-ji kare-sansui (dry landscape) zen garden paperweight to view. #ForestLawn . . . . . . #Glendale #parks #disney #lahistory #lostinla #cityofangels #cemetery #mortuary #discoverla #gravesite #architecture #visitcalifornia #losangeles #mermaids #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #lovela #statue #chasing_facades #littemermaid #oldhollywood #Copenhagen #fountains #statues

* Reírte a carcajadas, despeina. A few shots from a springtime, evening walk I decided to take instead of riding the bus. The sequence beings in Ocean View Blvd in downtown Montrose and includes a few images of Verdugo Park and its surrounding neighborhood. The walk actually began in Downtown Glendale where I was doing few things in the late afternoon, and then continued north to Montrose. It was foot torture but at the same time, it lifted my spirits. Thankfully, a ride and a friendly face were waiting for me at the end of it. the #Pink trees are #Handroanthus heptaphyllus, AKA pink trumpet #Tree. CALIFORNIA! CALIFORNIA! At her age, sleep is her constant companion. She frequently falls into deep sleep where she enters REM. Lately, her dreams have become increasingly vivid. They are portraying her life at five when she entertained herself in her grandparent's soiled backyard. She jumps from place to place and from incident to incident, but her most recent dream this past dusk, played in slow motion. During her REM phase, she saw two important-looking men with neatly combed hair in fawn-colored suits knock at her door. Their personalities and attire reminded her of the friendly ushers who greeted her with big smiles at the lord's house on Sundays. Then, the California fan palms in the backyard began to drip thick black water that was darker than her skin. Her brown English Cocker Spaniel couldn't advance as it was stuck in what seemed like a black flash flood that took over the surrounding beauty. The important-looking men then ran across the street in their stained guilty suits. As their faces transformed into vicious creatures, they both screamed, "California! California!" St. Mark’s Episcopal Church •1948• Carleton M. Winslow Some information from the church’s website www.SaintMarksarks.la- Saint Mark’s Church was one of the pioneer churches of Glendale, founded in the late 1880s. When the Second World War ended, Saint Mark’s acquired a prime location at the southeast corner of Brand Boulevard and Dryden Street. On this spot in 1948 it built its present church building, designed by the prominent ecclesiastical architect Carleton M. Winslow. The first service in the church was the Midnight Mass, December 24, 1948. The chapel to the right of the nave was dedicated to those who gave their lives in defense of the country in World War II, including six servicemen connected to Saint Mark’s. The chapel altar is the altar of the old church first given to Saint Mark’s by the Women’s Auxiliary of the Diocese in 1903. Also brought from the old church was the marble baptismal font given that same year by James and Laura McIntyre in memory of their two infant sons. The furnishing and decoration of the interior of the church as it appears today were mostly completed by the mid-1950s. Over the years, there have been several additions to the interior decor, most notable being the painted triptych above the altar created by artist Rhett Judice and installed in the church in 2002. To provide a temporary parish hall, a former Red Cross building that had stood in Pershing Square during the War was purchased and moved to the site in 1948. It has been refurbished in the last several years and it currently houses the Yellow and Purple rooms of Saint Mark’s Preschool. The current parish hall was built in 1954 and subsequently named in honor of Dr. Parlour. The front cloisters were completed in 1962, finally enclosing the courtyard according to the original Carleton Winslow master plan. The courtyard was redesigned and dedicated as a memorial garden in 2004.” #Glendale

Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple (Nishi Betsuin) •1925 Earlier this week I posted about the Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple ‘s current location at East First and Vignes Streets. Here is its original location, which now houses the Go For Broke Education Center dedicated to “the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a segregated Japanese American unit, which is remembered today for its brave actions in World War II. Despite the odds, the 442nd’s actions distinguished them as the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in the history of the US military.”-from www.NationalWW2museum.org The Betsuin closed during World War II. Its facilities were used for storage by some Japanese American evacuees. In 1945 it was offered as a hostel for evacuees returning from internment camps. Religious organizational activities resumed at this time . More about the original temple from www.NishiHongwanji-LA.org “Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple (LAHHBT or “Nishi”) has been serving Southern California since 1905. It belongs to the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha, one of the largest denominations of the Pure Land stream of Mahayana Buddhism. Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple (Nishi Betsuin) •1969 From the temple’s website www.NishiHongwanji-LA.org “Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple (LAHHBT or “Nishi”) has been serving Southern California since 1905. It belongs to the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha, one of the largest denominations of the Pure Land stream of Mahayana Buddhism. As a betsuin 別院, our temple is a direct branch of Nishi Hongwanji-ha in Kyoto, Japan. The temple’s main hall is called Hondo. It is the place which we gather to listen to the Teachings of the Buddha. Providing guidance and instruction in the Buddha-Dharma at the temple are ministers.   The temple provides the venue and the opportunity to listen to the Dharma and study the teachings in depth through such religious activities as Dharma services, seminars, workshops, special observances, and special events. Another objective of the temple is to provide assistance, through various means, for the welfare of the community, extending beyond the circle of the sangha.” Some additional information: The temple was located from 1925-1969 at First St and Central, in the building which I believe now houses the Go For Broke Education Center. Wisteria is the symbol of Nishi Hongwanji The Betsuin closed during World War II. Betsuin facilities were used for storage by some Japanese American evacuees. Koyasan Buddhist Temple• 1940 From Wikipedia- “In 1909, the Shutai Aoyama, native and former chief priest of Kakuganji Temple in Toyama- ken, left Japan for the United States with the blessings of his superiors, “to observe the religious situation in North America, as well as propagate Shingon Buddhism. In 1912, with support and encouragement from some of the Los Angeles Japanese community’s leading citizens, he opened the first Shingon temple in the United States called Koyasan Daishi Kyōkai of Los Angeles or just Daishi Church. The first established site was a storefront in 1912 near Elysian Park. In 1920, the temple was moved to a larger building on Central Avenue. In 1935, the Temple was elevated to the status of Koyasan Beikoku Betsuin, meaning it became the North American regional headquarters, recognized by the Koyasan Headquarters of Japan. In 1940, the Temple moved to its current location on East 1st Street. The current building consists of a main hall, which measures 60x120 feet, and an annex that measures 40x50 feet. The main hall has a seating capacity of 600 people, and a grand scale altar where the traditional esoteric rituals are performed. The main Buddha in the main hall is Dainichi Nyorai of the Vajradhatu Mandala. There are several other esoteric deities enshrined in the main hall of the temple . The second floor of the annex is a shrine to Kobo Daishi, designed for the purpose of religious gatherings and study classes especially for small groups, and accommodates a seating capacity of 100 people. It is known as the “Daishi-Do”, or the “Hall of Daishi”.” #LittleTokyo #LosAngeles . . . . . #buddhisttemple #temple # # #golittletokyo #japaneseBuddhism #Japanese #Shingon #dtla #downtowla #lostinla #cityofangels #socal #architecturaldetails #discoverla #architecture #visitcalifornia #architecturephotograhy #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #Ilovela #losangeles #historicdistrict #chasing_facades #buddhistarchitecture

Japanese House•1904 I’m currently traveling around Japan and thought it would be a nice time to share some Japanese sites around the Southland. Here’s a place I see very often. The Japan House at the heart of the Japanese Gardens within the Huntington. Ive also included some flowering bonsai trees also located within the gardens. Some history from LAConservancy- “The Japanese House is the centerpiece of the Japanese Garden at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens. Originally commissioned in 1903 by George T. Marsh, an influential promoter of Japanese art and culture, the Japanese House was moved from its original location in Pasadena to Henry Huntington’s San Marino estate after he purchased it in 1911. With a design blending Japanese and American architecture, the Japanese House is truly a product of turn-of-the-twentieth century Southern California. It features an elaborately curved roof with cedar shingles as well as artistic details including hand-carved wood elements and paintings. Years of water damage from a leaking roof, weather exposure, a fallen tree, rats, and time had all taken a toll on the Japanese House, and a subsequent sensitive restoration and preservation effort earned it a Conservancy Preservation Award in 2013.” #TheHuntington . . . #Japan #japangeles #walkingaround #attheH #pasadena #tatami # #losangeles #lostinla #cityofangels #chasing_facades #discoverla #architecture #visitcalifornia #SanMarino #facadelovers #architecturelovers #nippon #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #wanderingaround #japan #tatami #japanesearchitecture #japanesegarden # spring # #deserve2preserve #bonsai

Gamble House •1908• Greene & Greene Finally, my first post on Pasadena’s Gamble House. Here’s a short description from Wikipedia about the historic home, one of the most famous in Southern California. Tours of the home are offered at GambleHouse.org. “David and Mary Gamble lived in the house during the winter months until their deaths in 1923 and 1929, respectively. Mary’s younger sister Julia lived in the house until her death in 1943. Cecil Huggins Gamble and his wife Louise Gibbs Gamble lived in the house beginning in 1946. They briefly considered selling it, until prospective buyers spoke of painting the interior woodwork white. In 1966, the Gamble family turned the house over to the city of Pasadena in a joint agreement with the University of Southern California (USC) School of Architecture. The Gamble House was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977. Today, two 5th-year USC architecture students live in the house full-time; the selected students change annually. The exterior of the house gained worldwide exposure as the Brown Mansion, the home (in 1955) of Emmett “Doc” Brown in the 1985 movie Back to the Future and more prominently in the 1990 Back to the Future III.” California Historical Landmark Marker NO. 871 at the site reads: * NO. 871 THE GAMBLE HOUSE - Built in 1908, the David B. Gamble House is a tribute to the genius of architects Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene. Its design represents a unique California lifestyle and is a masterpiece of American craftsmanship. In 1966 it was made a gift by the Gamble family to the City of Pasadena in a joint agreement with the University of Southern California. #Pasadena . . . . #greeneandgreene #historichomes #oldhomes #lostinla #cityofangels #thisoldhouse #discoverla #visitcalifornia #historichouse #architecturephotograhy #facadelovers #losangeles #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #chasing_facades #craftsmanhome #homesofinstagram #thisoldhouse #deserve2preserve #homesweethome #craftsman #craftsmanstyle #cottagesandbungalows #hollywoodhome #historicneighborhood #craftsmanship #artsandcraftsmovement #filmlocations

A few shots from around Rossmoyne, another beautiful district located in NE Glendale. Here’s a description of the neighborhood from www.GlendaleCA.gov- “Rossmoyne is one of Glendale’s most interesting historic neighborhoods, rich with some of our finest residential architecture. The historic district - Glendale’s largest - consists of 503 homes set along gently curving streets and features an outstanding variety of Period Revival homes, including excellent examples of the Spanish Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and French-inspired designs. The area was developed by the Haddock-Nibley Company beginning in 1923 and was largely built out by 1950. Nibley Park, donated to the city by the developer, is included in the district. The Royal Boulevard Historic District includes a portion of the second phase of the Rossmoyne development.” #Glendale . . . . . #spanishstyle #spanishtiles #houses #homesweethome #beautifulhomes #lahomes #lostinla #cityofangels #spanishrevival #homesofinstagram #lastyle #discoverla #architecture #gardens #losangeles #visitcalifornia #architecturephotograhy #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #frontyard #spanishcolonial #spanishstylehome #chasing_facades #Rossmoyne #gardenlove

Neighboring Tudor revival homes located in the Niodada Drive Historic District in North Glendale. The Verdugo Woodlands neighborhood which surrounds this district is largely intact and contains the Catalina Verdugo Adobe, built in the 1800s. Also attached is a section from a depression-era newspaper advertisement for Verdugo Woodlands which ran in the Los Angeles Times. From the city of Glendale’s website www.GlendaleCA.gov- “The Niodrara Drive Historic District consists of 32 single-family homes in the Verdugo Woodlands neighborhood. The area is part of the land allotted to Teodoro and Catalina Verdugo, grand-nephew and daughter of the ranchero José María Verdugo, in the Great Partition of 1871. The land containing the proposed district was subdivided beginning in 1909, first by the Verdugo Canyon Land Company and then by the F.P. Newport Company in 1917. The lots were further subdivided in the post-World War II era. The houses in the district represent fifty years of development activity (1912 – 1962). Collectively, they display the range of styles popular during those decades, from Period Revival through the Ranch and Modern styles. They also reflect changing tastes and trends in Glendale’s residential architecture. The area is strongly defined by its landscape and streetscape features, including a flowing stream that once ran along both sides of Niodrara Drive. The various bridges that criss-cross the stream bed, along with other natural and man-made elements, define and give the district its unique rustic character. Though its homes were built over the course of several decades, the stream and lush, tree-filled landscape tie them together as a highly picturesque and cohesive district.” #Glendale . . . . . #tudorhouse #weathervane #lostinla #tudor #ilovela #mocktudor #visitcalifornia #discoverla #walkla #walkingla #walkinglosangeles #tudorhouse #losangeles #cityofangels #chasing_facades #discoverla #visitcalifornia #facadelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #historichouse #provincialrevivalism #storybook #cityofangels #historicpreservation #homesofinstagram #lahomes #homesweethome #lahomes

Paramount Laundry, the Metafor building, and the Gary Group office building From the Culver City Historical Survey- “John McBain was the contractor for the Paramount Laundry Company building when it was constructed in 1924. It was 110’ wide and 125’ long. Four years later a 20’ by 30’ garage was added to the rear. The laundry plant is unusually large and appears to have been built with the idea of servicing the Ince studio across the street. It is significant for its architectural integrity and for its possible connections with the movie studios.” From LAconservancy.org “Eric Owen Moss has designed buildings all over Southern California, but he is best known for his transformation of the Hayden Tract, an industrial neighborhood in Culver City. In 1989, Moss completed several remarkable Culver City buildings that prefigured his Hayden Tract work and set the scene for years of designs to come. The Lindblade Tower is an office building that marks the entrance to a complex containing three other Moss-designed buildings, that of the Paramount Laundry, the Metafor building, and the Gary Group office building. All of the buildings use parts of older industrial buildings, but are transformed with Deconstructivist forms. The Paramount Laundry building is particularly notable for its retention of the historic form and materials of the original two-story building; in this design, Moss extended the building’s two-story volume in a simple rectangular addition with window patterns echoing those of the original. The new addition is boldly marked by a three-story entry lobby covered in shining steel and angled beyond the building’s front façade. A matching steel canopy stretches across the front of the original building, supported by oversized clay and concrete columns.” (Continued below)

Culver City is and has been home to some notable contributions in Southern California storybook architecture. The fantastic Hobbit House (officially Lawrence and Martha Joseph Residence and Apartments) is located here along Dunn Dr. The famed Spadena House (the Witch’s House) in Beverly Hills was originally located here and served as the offices and dressing rooms for Irvin Willat’s film studio in 1921. It was moved to Beverly Hills and converted into a home 5 years later. On a small alleyway called Poinsettia Ct. you will find this sweet bit of storybook-style architecture hugging the curb of the sidewalk. I didn’t come across much information about the place online or in my books. From what I could find, it currently seems to be a small home that’s attached to and leased with an industrial space that fronts Lindblade St. Maybe someone out there knows more about it. #CulverCity . . . . . #storybookstyle #fantasyarchitecture #historichome #hanselandgretel #fairytalehouse #lostinla #cityofangels #discoverla #lahomes #visitcalifornia #architecturephotograhy #facadelovers #architecturelovers #homestyle #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #Americanarchitecture #Ilovela #losangeles #historichouse #homeinspiration #houses #homesweethome #losangeles #beautifulhomes #oldhomes #chasing_facades #homeofinstagram

A very cozy looking craftsman in Jefferson Park. Included are a few extra shots from around the neighborhood, which has craftsman lined streets that are remarkably intact. According to the neighborhood’s article on Wikipedia- “The Jefferson Park Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) was adopted by the Los Angeles City Council in 2011. The preservation plan offers guidelines for both commercial and residential structures in the community. The HPOZ does not cover the entire Jefferson Park neighborhood. The HPOZ is bounded by Adams Boulevard on the north, 7th Avenue on the west, Exposition Boulevard on the south (from Crenshaw Boulevard to Arlington Avenue), and Jefferson Boulevard on the south (from Arlington Avenue to Western Avenue). Street signs in the area have an additional sign to indicate that the street is part of the HPOZ area. The neighborhood is home to Craftsman bungalows, brick warehouses, colorful wall murals and small storefronts. In the early 1800s, it was partly within the Rancho Las Cienegas and partly within the common lands surrounding the pueblo. The area remained farmland into the 1900s. (One of the original farmhouses, the Starr Dairy Farmhouse built in 1887, still remains in the community.) After the 1948 Supreme Court ruling that banned racial covenants on property - Shelley v. Kraemer - the neighborhood saw an influx of upper-middle and upper-class African-American homebuyers.” . . . . . #losangeles #bungalow #prewar #craftsmanbungalow #historichomes #historicpreservation #victorianhouse #WestAdams #cityofangels #JeffersonPark #discoverla #visitcalifornia #historichouse #archi_ologie #facadelovers #architecturelovers #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #southla #chasing_facades #craftsmanhome #homesofinstagram #deserve2preserve #homesweethome #craftsman #craftsmanstyle #historicdistrict #LAhomes

Another Victorian/Craftsman transitional home in Western Heights that has a banner which proudly celebrates its centennial year (1907 to 2007) out front. I thought I’d easily come across something interesting about this 117 year old home online. Unfortunately, all I found was an old real estate ad listing it as 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, and renovated back in 2008. It sold back in 2015. Picture 2 is of another mysterious home nearby. These houses were once a comfortable walk from each other, being just a few blocks apart, but today interstate 10 separates them. #WesternHeights #WestAdams . . . #losangeles #victorian #victorianhouses #victorianhome #historichomes #oldhomes #victorianhouse #lostinla #cityofangels #thisoldhouse #discoverla #visitcalifornia #historichouse #MidCity #facadelovers #architecturelovers #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #southla #chasing_facades #craftsmanhome #homesofinstagram #deserve2preserve #homesweethome #craftsman #craftsmanstyle #porches

Two Homes by the architect Frank M Tyler, both located in West Adams Heights. This information comes Kansas Sebastian’s always illuminating Flickr.com account. The pictures are form my walks, as usual.- “Eckerly-Janney Residence Residence •1903 •Frank M Tyler, with interior modifications by Alfred S and Albert Heineman.   The Eckerly Mansion is a Transitional Victorian-Craftsman of the kind typical for F M Tyler – just on a much larger scale. The third floor is rumored to have been a ball room. The apartment building located north of the house was once the property’s gardens. After commissioning the house, Eckerly sold it to Chas G Pratt in 1909 who flipped the house in 1910 to Frank G & Florence B Janney. F G Janney was recognized as the “eminent metallurgical engineers of America and the world, and was one of the founders of the famous Utah Copper mines, was mill superintendent of all the copper mines of Utah and of other mines in Arizona.” In 1912 the interior was redesigned by Alfred S and Albert Heineman. William H Chamberlain Residence •1907 •Frank M Tyler Somewhere out there is a photograph of William Chamberlain in front of his Oxford Ave house, with a new Baker Electric car. According to ww.wWindsorSquareLosAngeles.blogspot.com, this elegant Lorraine Blvd home was “built on spec in 1920 by Arthur C. Davis, son-in-law and business partner of Sanson M. Cooper in the S. M. Cooper Company. The architect was Robert D. Jones in partnership with Sanson M. Cooper acting as contractor. The identities of the owners during its first 18 years are obscure. The house did not sit empty, of course; among other indicators of occupancy, such as directory listings of servants, an auction of its contents was held on 3-18-1930. In 1939, the family of Blackstone Smith, sales manager of the Holly Products Company (a cleanser manufacturer in Vernon), moved in. In 1943, the house was purchased by contractor Harry W. Baum, who immediately installed a new fireplace (BP issued 1-13-1944). Baum remained until 1949, when it was placed on the market that spring By 1950, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick L. Ryon were in residence; he was a creamery executive. The Ryons stayed until at least 1956. In residence by 1960 was insurance executive Hubert F. Laugharn Jr., whose father had been living in Windsor Square for many years. Like his father, Junior settled in for a long stay. In 1979, he erected a 35’ flagpole at the northwest corner of the house (BP issued 3-20-1979). The pole still remains.”  #WindsorSquare #HancockPark . . . . #losangeles #historichomes #oldhomes #spanishstylehome #cityofangels #thisoldhouse #discoverla #visitcalifornia #spanishstyle #doorwaysofinstagram #facadelovers # #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #chasing_facades #spanishstyle #doorway #homesofinstagram #historicneighborhood #deserve2preserve #homesweethome #columns #historicpreservation #historicneighborhood #spanishstylearchitecture #lahomes #SpanishColonial

The Piccadilly •1929•Milton M. Friedman From Los Angeles Department of City Planning documents- “Constructed in 1929, The Piccadilly was designed in the Chateauesque architectural style by local architect Milton M. Friedman (1882-1933) for owner Francis J. Murphy as an apartment building. H-shaped in plan with deep light wells on the north- and south-facing facades, the subject property is of reinforced concrete and steel construction. The primary, west-facing façade is symmetrically composed and features a central, seven-story projecting volume that has a pyramidal roof with two dormers, turrets, balconies, quoins and a recessed, tripartite arched entry. At the top of the pyramidal roof of the central volume is a sign that reads, “P.” On either side of the projecting volume are six-story, two-bay volumes with mansard roofs and full-width balconies with corbels at the sixth floor. At the ground level, the side volumes are fronted by two arches that are flush with the front of the central projecting volume. The hyphen of the H-shaped plan has a flat roof and the east wing has a barrel roof and a rooftop neon sign that reads, “Piccadilly.” Interior features include hardwood floors, courtyards with tiled walls and water features, tudor archways, and box beam ceilings in the entry hall. Milton Maxwell Friedman was born in California in 1882 and designed a number of other buildings in Los Angeles that include the Hotel Chancellor (1924); an apartment building at 216 S. Mansfield (1926); the Valentino Arms (1928); the Chalfonte (1929); and the New Administration Building or “Lubitsch Annex” on the Paramount Pictures lot (1930).” #Koreatown . . . . #chateauesque #french #mansard #historicbuildings #historicarchitecture #losangeles #apartmenttherapy #chasing_facades #discoverla #architecture #visitcalifornia #frenchstyle #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #chateau #frencharchitecture #oldhollywoodglamour #Wilshire #storybook #turret #oldbuilding #deserve2preserve #turret #apartmentbuilding #Ktown

The Fedora Wood Apartments brings a pop of zigzag moderne deco to a block of Korea Town dominated by bland contemporary apartments and a scattering of “pre-earthquake regulation” 1920’s brick dwellings. There’s not a whole lot online that I found about this building other than that it contains 39-units within its 3 stories and is listed as being built in 1937. It’s a remnant from a distinct architectural/city planning period on and around Wilshire Blvd between the wars. Here’s a short description of that era from An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles by Dr. David Gebhard and Dr. Robert W. Winter- “The 1920s brought the idea of Wilshire Boulevard as the “Champs Élysées of Los Angeles.” Apartments, major churches, retail stores, social institutions, and low-rise offices arrived, including masterworks from John and Donald B. Parkinson, Myron Hunt, and Morgan, Walls, and Clements. Two excellent examples of narrow, Art Deco apartment towers are The Serrano (1930) at 511 S. Serrano Ave. and La Marquise (1931) at 535 S. Gramercy Pl. In 1957, Los Angeles rescinded its 150-foot height limit for buildings, so Victor Gruen’s Tishman Building launched the high-rise era on Wilshire.” #Koreatown . . . . . #oldhollywood #historicbuilding #artdecobuilding #losangeles #zigzagmoderne #cityofangels #oldhollywoodglamour #deserve2preserve #chasing_facades #discoverla #apartmentdecor #architecture #visitcalifornia #apartmentliving #architecturephotograhy #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #artdecoarchitecture #Ilovela #deco #artdeco #artdecostyle #artdéco #accidentallywesanderson #ktown

The Beacon (formery Hotel Shangri-La) •1940• William E Foster The following information comes from www.SantaMonicaConservancy.org- “On October 30, 1938, the Los Angeles Times reported that plans were being prepared for one of the “largest apartment buildings constructed in Southern California in a decade.” A building permit for a new concrete apartment hotel for sixty-two families was filed on February 15, 1939. The developer, Tulsa-Santa Monica Corporation/F.A. Gillespie & Sons under the direction of Frank A. Gillespie, had the objective of “bringing to Santa Monica people of wealth and distinction from every part of the globe.” The Shangri-La Apartment Hotel, advertised as “America’s New Design for Living” opened on May 1, 1940. The building’s innovative design maximized open air circulation and views. Its L-shaped plan provided every room with both west-facing ocean and east-facing interior patio views. Originally constructed as apartments, the first five floors had nine double apartments and two bachelor apartments, with five luxury apartments on the sixth floor, and two penthouses on the seventh floor. The property has functioned both as an apartment and hotel, providing extended stay accommodations for guests and as a contemporary daily-rate hotel. During World War II, the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), a military aviation arm of the U.S. Army, used the Shangri-La Hotel as a rehabilitation station.” The hotel was renamed The Beacon in February 2023, when Sonder Hospitality Group assumed management. . . . . . #hotel #oldhollywood #losangeles #cityofangels #streamlinemoderne #deserve2preserve #chasing_facades #discoverla #visitcalifornia #architecturephotograhy #facadelovers #architecturelovers #beachlife #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #artdecoarchitecture #beachhotel #deco #moderne #artdecostyle #balcony #artdeco #streamline #SantaMonoca #SantaMonicaBeach

Views of the Pacific from Palisades Park in Santa Monica. Here’s some information about the park from Wikipedia- “Palisades Park is a 26.4-acre (10.7 ha) park in Santa Monica, California. The park is located along a 1.6-mile (2.6 km) section of Ocean Avenue on top of an uplifted unconsolidated sedimentary coastal Quaternary terrace with exposed bluffs, offering views of both the Pacific Ocean and the coastal mountains. The earliest portion of the park was gifted to the City of Santa Monica in 1892 by city founders Arcadia Bandini de Baker and John Percival Jones. The park was originally named Linda Vista Park until 1915. Throughout the early 1900s, the city expanded the park with additional land and commissioned upgrades to the area, installing walking paths, planting landscaping, and erecting lighting. In 2007, the park was designated as a historic landmark by the city of Santa Monica. The oldest structure built in Palisades Park is the Idaho Gate, a Craftsman-style archway built in 1912 and named for the adjacent street. There was a train/streetcar stop at the park called Linda Vista station; the building was torn down in 1955. The park has more than 30 species of plants and trees, including gum, yate, pine, palm, and fig trees.” #santamonica #PalisadesPark . . . . #santamonicabeach # #oceanfrontwalk #pacificocean #beach #beachlife #beachcity #coastline #streetgrammer #bikeriding #beachview #citypark #beachesofinstagram #lostinla #cityofangels #chasing_facades #discoverla #bluffs # #visitcalifornia #facadelovers #springwalk #publicpark #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #palmtrees #cityscape #urbanphotography

I am very pleased to share with you all the release of my first photo book,“The 4 Seasons of Los Angeles.” I began working on it last summer and now it’s up for sale on Amazon. The link to purchase it is on my Instagram bio page and listed below. The book is a square 8.5 x 8.5, 140 page paperback book, printed on demand by Kindle Direct Publishing. All but a few of the images were taken between Sept 2019 (the time which I started this account) and 2023. When I decided to put a photo book together, I began by simply organizing the images I wanted to use by the month they were taken. Later, i had the idea to put them together according to the season, which inspired the theme of the book and the title, “The 4 Seasons of Los Angeles”. Inside, you’ll find some of the best pictures I’ve taken over the years and a short musing over how I see the seasons play out around L.A. from my “dedicated” walkers point-of-view. Though it’s not a book exclusively about architecture or Los Angeles homes, you will definitely find plenty of that within the pages. I hope you all enjoy this book. It was a real labor of love for me. I had a lot of fun putting it together. Thank you all for the interest and enthusiasm you show in the content I share here. It made this book possible. Amazon also has it available in the following counties: Uk, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Japan, Canada, and Australia. The link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CXDTLZ1C You can also find another preview on the desktop version of the link above. P.S. I came across some pictures I took a few years ago showing bright, beautiful blossoming trees along the streets of Chinatown. On Wednesday I went back to see if I could get some updated shots. It looks like I was a little early for some of the trees, but I still managed to get some pictures of the bright colors you find around L.A.’s Chinatown. The first shot is from March of 2021, on a beautiful sunny day. The rest are from last Wednesday, when the weather a little more “moody”. #Chinatown #LosAngeles . . . . . #spring #flashbackfriday #chinatownla #chinesearchitecture #chinese #chineseamerican #dtla #downtowla #lostinla #cityofangels #sprintime #architecturaldetails #discoverla #architecture #visitcalifornia #architecturephotograhy #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #blossoms #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #Ilovela #losangeles #historicdistrict #chasing_facades

According to IamNotAStalker.com- “On Mad Men, the Draper family supposedly lives in the town of Ossining in Westchester County, New York.  In reality, though, their home is located in the suburbs of Pasadena, just a stone’s throw away from the Father of the Bride house.  It’s such a small movie world, isn’t it?  😉” The Pasadena neighborhood which this house stands is listed as Madison Heights on Google Maps. Simply a shot of an elegant home that caught my eye in Hancock Park. Hancock Park is like many upscale neighborhoods in America that developed significantly in the 1920s and 30s, with a mix of home styles like Tudor, Colonial Revival, French Eclectic, Neoclassical, etc. In the west you can find some grand Craftsman homes added into that mix and of course Spanish Style homes like this one are very common. I often list it as Spanish style but it has many other names. Spanish Colonial is one alternative name I hear often. An old edition of “A Field Guide to American Houses” that I own calls it Spanish eclectic. I’ve heard California Colonial and Morrish style also used. Whatever you call them, L.A. has some of the best examples in the country. #HancockPark . . . . . #spanishstyle #spanishtiles #houses #homesweethome #beautifulhomes #lahomes #lostinla #cityofangels #spanishrevival #homesofinstagram #lastyle #discoverla #homes #gables #losangeles #visitcalifornia #architecturephotograhy #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #frontyard #spanishcolonial #spanishstylehome #chasing_facades #deserve2preserve #1920sdesign

Today is Frank Gehry’s 95th birthday. Here’s one of his firms lesser known commercial buildings from the 80s, along Main Street in Santa Monica. More about this shopping center from the book An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles by Dr. David Gebhard and Dr. Robert W. Winter- “Edgemar Development •1984-1988 • Frank O. Gehry• 2415-2437 Main St. The location has seen use since 1908 as an ice house and later an egg production facility named Edgemar. Now its an evolving mix of eateries, galleries, and shops. The assemblage may be thought of as a mini-mall —oh, if only they all looked like this!; it also harks back to a 1920s Los Angeles where a number of theaters were built with forecourts containing restaurants and retail shops. Gehry leads you into the central courtyard through two passages; one is defined by the curve of the west building, the other by an angled passageway.” On April 5th, the Colburn School will break ground on the Gehry designed Colburn Center in Downtown L.A. The signature component of the project is a 1,000-seat concert hall, to be named for Terri and Jerry Kohl, which would be Downtown’s first mid-sized concert hall. #SantaMonica . . . . . #mainstreet #minimall #shoppingcenter #frankgehry #losangelescalifornia #walkinglosangeles #losangeles #beachside #lostinla #cityofangels #socal #discoverla #gehry #visitcalifornia #urbanphotography #happybirthday #disneyhall #publicpark #walkingla #landscapephotography #landscape #modernarchitecture #1980s #contemporaryarchitecture #santamonicabeach #mainstusa #architects

Fairchild-Hastings Residence •1910• Myron H M Hunt, Elmer Grey, and Robert D Farquhar  Written by Kansas Sebastian on his Flickr.com page about L.A. architecture.- “Talk about a house with an architectural pedigree! Three of Los Angeles’s most prominent architects had their hand in creating this beautifully designed Colonial Revival mansion - Myron H M Hunt, Elmer Grey and Robert D Farquhar. The home was originally built for James (Jas) A Fairchild, who came to California in the late 1800’s and made his fortune in asphalt, paving the early city dirt streets. Dr. Hill Hastings was the second owner, who commissioned Robert D Farquhar to remodel the library and add a bedroom. By the end of the century, it was a boarding house, with many alterations. The current owner has restored the house, bringing it back to its former beauty. A service stairway in the back of the house, which had been sealed off, was re-discovered and opened during the renovations. The 1911 garage designed by Elmer Grey contains a large chauffeurs quarters above. The 1915/1928 Farquhar library addition had been dry-walled over at some point and has been uncovered and beautiful wood-work restored. It should be noted that John Griffin Mott, a Los Angeles native and son of Thomas and Ascension Sepulveda Mott married James Fairchild’s daughter, Miss Lila Fairchild. Mott studied law at St Vincent’s College (USC) and the University of Indiana, then began a practice in Los Angeles. He was a leader in the Republican Party and active in support of the Los Angeles Harbor in San Pedro and the Owens River Aqueduct. It’s one of the finest looking schools in the city and is currently undergoing a “comprehensive modernization” that is scheduled to be completed in 2027. None of the historic buildings seem to be affected by this project. Here’s some more information from www.LAUSDHistory.org- “John Burrough Middle School, founded in 1924, is located in Los Angeles. It is the home of the Bears.  It offers a Dual Language program, a magnet program, and a Schools for Advanced Studies (SAS) program. In 2019, it had approximately 1,842 students and a student/teacher ratio of 26:1.” The school’s exterior and interior have been used in many films and tv shows like Never Been Kissed ,Teen Wolf, Pleasantville, Ohio, Rebound, Beauty Shop, Agent Cody Banks,, and the television series Family Matters. Famous alumni of John Burroughs Middle School include Laila Ali (Muhammad Ali’s daughter), Tyra Banks, author James Ellroy, and American Idol’s Frenchie Davis. #HancockPark . . . . #losangeles #catholicschool #rainphotography #chasing_facades #discoverla #architecture #visitcalifornia #highschool #schoolarchitecture #facadelovers #romantic #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #collegiate #brickbuilding #rainyday # #campuslife #accidentallywesanderson #oldbuildings #renaissancestyle #brickbuilding #oldschool #buildingsofinstagram #bricklove

Last weekend I took a leisurely walk over the 6th St Viaduct to check out the view of snow capped San Gabriel Mountains. The day was beautifully clear and not too warm. More rain is on the way next week and perhaps more snow, though we are not expected to get anywhere near the rainfall totals we had during the last storm. I had over 8 inches fall in my neighborhood which is a lot considering that we only get about 15 inches a year on average. Though we are on track to have a wetter than average rain year in L.A. again, our snowpack is only about 60-70 % of what it typically is for this time of year in California . Hopefully, there will be a few more cold and snowy storms out there for the mountains to get that number up before the season ends. #6thStViaduct . . . . . . #bridgesofinstagram #bridges #bridges_of_our_world #lostinla #cityofangels #mountains #dtla #discoverla #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #6thStBridge #Ilovela #bridgetown #winter #bridge #bridges_of_instagram #losangeles #snow # #dtla #losangelesriver #downtownla #arches #bridge #ArtsDistrict #BoyleHeights #artsdistrictla #snowcapped #losangelesriver

Van de Kamp’s Holland Dutch Bakery (now Denny’s) • 1967• Harold Bissner From www.AtlasObscura.com- “Founded in 1915, Van de Kamp’s Holland Dutch Bakery quickly won over Southern Californians with its coffee and pastries. As branches of the chain popped up throughout the state, as well as along the Oregon and Washington coasts, all fans had to do was search for the slowly twirling blades of the stores’ signature rooftop windmills. As the company changed owners several times across the latter half of the 20th century (eventually filing for bankruptcy in 1990), the stores and their windmills disappeared.  Those nostalgic for the days of Dutch-themed dining can simply venture to Arcadia, where the lone remaining Van de Kamp windmill still twirls atop a Denny’s diner. The building is unmissable: Built in 1967, it blends elements of Dutch and Googie architecture and design. In the case of the Arcadia building, that meant a roundish structure with a folded-plate roof that was, of course, topped with a trademark windmill. Since Denny’s took over the space in 1989, the windmill has teetered on the edge of extinction. Initially, the diner chain planned to demolish it, but a public outcry led them to keep the local fixture. For 27 years, the windmill sat atop the restaurant, only spinning when gusts proved favorable. Then, in 2016, Denny’s added a few updates to bring the windmill back to life: a new motor, reinforced blades, and LEDs for nighttime illumination. But in 2017, disaster struck, as the blades detached and collapsed onto the roof. Thankfully, it didn’t break through and no one was injured. After a yearlong hiatus, a restored windmill appeared on the building in November 2018. It still spins, day and night, continuing its work beckoning hungry drivers to come inside for a cup of coffee and breakfast.” #Arcadia . . . . #mimetic #roadside #Googie #lostinla #cityofangels #socal #roadsideattraction #discoverla #streetphotography #midcentury #visitcalifornia #architecturephotograhy #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #sangabrielvalley #dennys #facade #vandekamp #chasingfacades #walkingla #walkinglosangeles #windmill #dutchwindmill #deserve2preserve

Arcadia Chamber of Commerce •1965• Fickes & Fickes From the inscription on the historical marker outside the building and set up in 2009 by Arcadia Historical Society- “With the demise of the famous Red Line electric railway, land in the median of Huntington Drive directly across from the famous Santa Anita Park horse track became available on which to build a headquarters for the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce in 1964. The photos above show the design by architect Fickes & Fickes and the groundbreaking ceremony at this location. The round building, dedicated on Nov. 13, 1965, has been likened to a UFO or something from the futuristic cartoon TV series “The Jetsons,” but it instantly made the Chamber the geographic and civic hub of the City and has served the Chamber well for nearly half a century and counting. The very rough boundaries are Eighth Street on the north, Beacon Street on the east, Thirteenth Street on the south, and Pacifc Avenue on the west. Arguably the most notable feature is Lindholm House (1888), an early Queen Anne with some Eastlake details. The house has a two-story spindled porch and a corner bay tower whose third stage is open. San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building (Los Angeles Maritime Museum •1941• Derwood Lydell Irvin From Wikipedia- “The Los Angeles Maritime Museum is housed in the former Municipal Ferry Terminal building, located on the main channel of the Los Angeles Harbor. It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by architect Derwood Lydell Irvin of the Los Angeles Harbor Department. It was built in 1941 at Berth 84, by the Works Project Administration (WPA). The ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. The building was then used for offices of the LA Harbor Department. The San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Los Angeles Maritime Museum opened in 1979 as a result of widespread community efforts to save the historic building. The museum’s interior renovation was designed by architect James Pulliam. The museum is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.” A building similar to this one, on the Terminal Island side was demolished to accommodate port expansion. #SanPedro #PortOfLosAngeles . . . . . #rainstorm #portown #accidentallywesanderson #losangeles #lostinla #cityofangels #californiastorms #walkingintherain #discoverla #streetscape #visitcalifornia #urbanphotography #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #Ilovela #igersla #lahistory #streamline #ferrybuilding #rainyday #streetsgrammer #harbour #maritime #rainwalk #moderne #artdeco #itneverrainsinsouthernCalifornia

Tahl Mah Sah Buddhist Monastery & Temple of America A few exterior shots of Tahl Mah Sah Buddhist Temple on Wilton Place. Google lists its hours as 7-5, but when I stopped by on a weekday afternoon, nothing was open apart from the front gate 🤷🏻‍♂️. On a sidenote, Koreatown (the temple is technically within the boundaries of Wilshire Park) has one of the most interesting concentrations of religious architecture in the city. Especially concrete churches from the 20s and 30s. I should do a walking tour in my stories of the many different and attractive temples and churches you can within close proximity of each other in this neighborhood. Here’s a bit of information on the temple from KoreatownLAdirectory.com “Located in the southwest area of Koreatown, “Tahl Ma Sa” is a modest Buddhist shrine with a main hall for prayer, a small bell pavilion, and small Buddha statues. * This is a quiet, private Buddhist meeting place for traditional Koreans from the old country.” You are welcome to stop by and visit Dalmasa on the official day of Buddha’s birth, observed on May 15, 2024 by South Koreans.” #Koreatown #WilshirePark . . . . . #Buddhisttemple #temple #losangeles #buddhism #ktown #koreantenple #korean #WilshireCenter #yearofthedragon #buddha #lostinla #cityofangels #bells #architecturaldetails #discoverla #streetphotography #visitcalifornia #architecturephotograhy #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #Ilovela #losangeles #dragons #chasing_facades #religousarchitecture

The South Seas House •1902 Taken from www.LAParks.org- “The South Seas House has stood in the Historic West Adams District for more than 100 years. Originally Built in 1902 by Los Angeles music patron Joseph DuPuy, the two-story house is a combination of several styles— Victorian, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and Craftsman, to name a few. The house has intrigued generations with its sharply peaked Polynesian-style gables (unlike any other constructed in that era), arroyo stone pillars, clapboard outer walls and triangular attic vents. Experts say it was one of Los Angeles’ first tropical-themed houses, the precursor to the exotically eclectic architecture of the 1920s. Joseph Dupuy died in 1922 and over the next 50 years a succession of owners took care of the house. In the 1970’s however, the City of Los Angeles purchased the home for a street widening project that fell through. By the 1990’s the house was empty except for squatters who vandalized the place and scavenged everything from doorknobs to banisters. The South Seas House was brought back to life through the efforts of local community members after years of neglect and the doors were re-opened in June of 2003. It is operated by the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks and has been revitalized as a recreation and community center and serves the community with programs for both children and adults. While it is not your typical recreation center, we do offer Day camp programs, computer classes, after school programs, tutoring and small private functions. “. . . . . . #losangeles #victorian #victorianhouses #victorianhome #historichomes #historicpreservation #victorianhouse #WestAdams #cityofangels #JeffersonPark #discoverla #visitcalifornia #historichouse #archi_ologie #facadelovers #architecturelovers #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #southla #chasing_facades #craftsmanhome #homesofinstagram #deserve2preserve #homesweethome #craftsman #craftsmanstyle #historicdistrict #LAhomes

A few pictures from one of my walks around Silver Lake and its reservoir (decommissioned in 2006). The neighborhood is a healthy walking distance from where I live, so I often take a stroll around here when I don’t want to venture too far from home. It was mostly warm and sunny out, but there were some excellent cloud formations in sky above which made this an attractive afternoon outing. #SilverLake #LosAngeles . . . . . #homesweethome #spanishstyle #spanishtiles #losangeles #historichomes #spanishrevival #winter2024 #houses #homesweethome #beautifulhomes #oldhomes #lostinla #cityofangels #cloudphotography #homesofinstagram #discoverla #mountainview #visitcalifornia #architecturephotograhy #facadelovers #streetphotography #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #reservoir #homesofinstagram #chasing_facades #skylovers

Evergreen Cemetery and Ivy Chapel •1877 From the book An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles by Dr. David Gebhard and Dr. Robert W. Winter- “Evergreen Cemetery is the oldest continuously operating cemetery in Los Angeles. It contains some interesting nineteenth-century tombs and sculpture. Architecturally, the important object within the cemetery is Ivy Chapel, designed by Arthur B. Benton in 1903. The chapel is a medieval stone structure with a handsome front composed of four pointed windows along with a long narrow porch. There is also a restored nineteenth-century Chinese-American burial shrine. A walk through the gravestones adorned with photographs, particularly in Italian American and Armenian-American sections, reveals a fascinating portrait of the emerging city. Also moving is a monument for the Japanese-American 442nd Infantry Regiment.” There’s also this additional information from IamNotAStalker.com- “The 67-acre cemetery is home to over 300,000 departed souls, many of whom figured prominently in the City of Angels’ founding.  Just a few of the notables buried at Evergreen include oil baron Charles Canfield, Ralphs founder George Ralph, Our Gang’s Matthew Beard, Church of Christ founder Charles Price Jones, former slave-turned-entrepreneur Bridget “Biddy” Mason, Robinsons-May department store founder Joe Winchester Robinson, the Penguin’s Jesse Belvin (who co-wrote the song “Earth Angel”), the Coasters’ Bobby Nunn, and Isaac Lankershim and his son-in-law, Isaac Newton Van Nuys, who together founded both the cities of Van Nuys and North Hollywood.” The Ivy Chapel was used in the 1984 horror classic “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” The cemetery was also used as a location in the 1985 drama “Mask” starring Cher, as well as the television show “Criminal Minds.”. #BoyleHeights . . . . #stonechurch #winterdays #movielocation #tombstones #lostinla #cityofangels #cemetery #mortuary #discoverla #gravesite #architecture #visitcalifornia #losangeles #winterwalk #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #stonebuilding #statue #chasing_facades #stonefacade #oldhollywood #medievalarchitecture #filmlocations #statues

The Paramount Ballroom •1925 From the Nov. 10, 2022 LATimes.com article by Selene Rivera- “The Paramount Ballroom’s earliest incarnations in the 1920s included a stint as a Jewish bakers’ union. During the Great Depression, it turned into a soup kitchen, and as the economy began to recover in the late 1930s, it was transformed into a ballroom. Concerts began in 1939 with Count Basie’s jazz orchestra, the first time an all-Black band was allowed to perform in Boyle Heights. For the next several decades, the building shook with appearances by Benny Goodman; Don Tosti (best-known for his song “Pachuco Boogie”); Little Julián Herrera, the first Chicano R&B singer; and salsa giants like Celia Cruz and Tito Puente. The 1960s and ‘70s brought Chicano rock groups like Cannibal and the Headhunters and Thee Midniters, followed by Los Illegals and Thee Undertakers in the 1980s. In 2010, the Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory opened, a nonprofit offering free music lessons in guitar, piano, keyboards, trumpet and DJ-ing.” According to the venues wesbsite www.ParamountLA.com-“The venues 400 person capacity allows it to host a wide variety of acts, from internationally touring bands, to fast-rising indie rock bands to popular local artists.” #BoyleHeights . . . . . #bricklove #historicbuildings #historicarchitecture #losangeles #lostinla #cityofangels #chasing_facades #discoverla #brickbuilding #visitcalifornia #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #masonry #brickbuilding #AmericanHistory #Jazzhistory #brickbybrick #oldbuilding #deserve2preserve #chicanohistory #chicano #punkrock

Here are 10 images from a recent walk through Hollenbeck Park in Boyle Heights. I like this park’s lake and its three fountains, which turn on and off every few minutes. You can also come across a variety of birds and turtles hanging out lakeside. Here’s a brief history from Wikipedia- “Hollenbeck Park has been an oasis in the Boyle Heights neighborhood since 1892. The park was named for John Edward Hollenbeck (1829-1885), founder of First National Bank, whose widow, along with former L.A. Mayor William Workman, donated 21 acres (85,000 m2) of land. In May 1929 the Laurel and Hardy film Men O’ War was filmed here, back when there were still rental boats for the public. In the 1950s, the Golden State Freeway was built against its western boundary.” Followers of my account have noted some the unique and mature flora found in the park. Particularly a group of Araucaria bidwillii trees, commonly known as the bunya pine, which is a large evergreen coniferous tree native to Australia. I’m not totally sure, but I believe the large tree with red needles that looks like it’s sick is actually a red cypress or bald cypress native to the Southeastern U.S. There are a few parks that have these trees planted in LA and they drop their needles each winter and then grow a new set in spring. Ive also included a few views of and from the 6th St Viaduct. Since the bridge isn’t very far from the park; I now include a walk over it whenever I visit. #BoyleHeights #HollenbeckPark . . . . . #cityofangels #discoverla #visitcalifornia #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #igersla #lamagviews #shotoniphone #streetsgrammer #birdwatching #dtla #skyline #walkinthepark #publicpark #urbanphotography #seemycity #fountains #visitlosangeles #lakeside #eastla #urbanwildlife #cityscape #6thstreetbridge #wildlife #urbanhikers #losangeles #skyscrapers #downtownla

Dunbar Hotel •1928 From www.LAConservancy.org- “Built as the Hotel Somerville, the Dunbar Hotel played a key role in L.A.’s African American community for decades. Doctor John Somerville built the hotel for the first West Coast convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1928. The hotel provided first-class accommodations for African Americans in segregated Los Angeles, who were denied comparable lodging elsewhere. The hotel was a great source of pride, having been financed and built by African Americans. An instant landmark, it was considered the finest black hotel in the nation—and quickly sparked the area’s development. At the heart of the Central Avenue jazz scene, many prominent jazz musicians stayed or performed there, including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, and Bessie Smith. Other notable guests included Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Hern Jefferies, Langston Hughes, Joe Louis, Arthur B. Spingarn, and W. E. B. Du Bois. The Dunbar fell into a slow decline starting in the 1960s and stood vacant for over a decade. Thomas Safran Associates and the Coalition for Responsible Community Development revived the hotel as the centerpiece of Dunbar Village, an affordable housing project for seniors and families. Reversing years of deferred maintenance and alterations, the team restored hundreds of original features with great attention to detail, while fully upgrading the building for modern use. The building’s atrium, which was enclosed years after the building was first constructed, was reopened as a communal space with skylights and replicated tiles, flooring, and a fountain in the same location as the original.” It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. #CentralAve . . . . . #missionrevival #historicbuildings #historicarchitecture #losangeles #lostinla #cityofangels #chasing_facades #discoverla #brickbuilding #visitcalifornia #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #masonry #californiahistory #AmericanHistory #Jazzhistory #spanishstyle #oldbuilding #deserve2preserve #blackarchitecture #blackhistory

Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company •1928• James H. Garrott, Louis Blodgett From Wikipedia- “The Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Building was built in 1928 and for many years housed one of Los Angeles’s most successful African American-owned businesses, the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company. The building is located in the heart of the city’s Central Avenue commercial district that was a center of the jazz world in the 1930s and 1940s. The two-story building was designed by architect James H. Garrott and constructed by Louis Blodgett (both African Americans) in the Mission Revival style. The company occupied the second floor, while the first floor was rented out to local merchants. In 1949, the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company moved to its new headquarters in West Adams, now also an historic building.” National Register of Historic Places No. 98000712 #CentralAve . . . . . #missionrevival #historicbuildings #historicarchitecture #losangeles #lostinla #cityofangels #chasing_facades #discoverla #architecture #visitcalifornia #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #missionstyle #californiahistory #AmericanHistory #WesternHistory #spanishstyle #oldbuilding #deserve2preserve #blackarchitecture #blackhistory #southla #africanamericanhistory #southcentral

Sherwood House •1929• Charles M. Hutchison This was written March 2013 in www.LosFelizLiving.com- “This is a classic Tudor style home that was designed in 1929 by Charles M. Hutchison. It was originally part of the F.P. Fay Company’s “Los Feliz Hills” planned subdivision. The first owner’s name was Lucile Sherwood. Even though she only lived there for a few years, the name stuck. It was then the home of James J. Cline, in 1930, who was a UC Berkeley running back during the 1923 and ‘24 seasons. Although Cline was a star of the team, the team had an atrocious record during his time with the team. The only posted 2 wins in two years. Cline was the founder of Cline Lumber, an LA staple for generations of home builders. Then the home passed to Tobias Kotzin, who was a clothing manufacturer in Los Angeles. He lived in the home from 1944 to 1976. His wife, Bessie, stayed there until her death in 1989.” The house features a steeply pitched, multi-gabled roof and hand-toweled stucco finish as well as a weather vane designed as a harness racer which sits atop the roof’s front hipped gable. Posted @withregram • @walkinglosangeles You may have come across one of these “Time Switches” which are scattered around town. They seem to go by a few different names , depending on who you talk to. The best one I’ve heard is Keystone Alarm Stations. According to the @losangelespolicemuseum, they are made from our old recycled police and fire call boxes. They are still used by the city to house street lighting equipment. If you come across a worn-down, unpainted one like this on Verde Oak Dr near W Live Oak Dr, you can e-mail [email protected] and they, in collaboration with LADWP, will restore them. #TheOaks . . . . . #losangeles #lostinla #cityofangels #chasing_facades #southerncalifornia #architecturephotograhy #deservetopreserve #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #oldamerica #laconservancy #keystone #callbox #streetfurniture #oldhollywood #oldla #timeswitch #lastreet #lastreetstyle #hollywoodhills From FPR: thanks @iamscottmichaels for the intro to these in his Patreon story about the mysterious death of Thelma Todd #thelmatodd

Bubeshko Apartments •R. M. Schindler Information from www.LAConservancy.org- “In the late 1930s, modernist master R. M. Schindler designed two apartment buildings in Silver Lake for Anastasia Bubeshko and her daughter Luby. The clients wanted a home that would also provide rental income, as well as living spaces that were flexible enough to be re-arranged as needed in the future. Schindler responded with a vision of a “Greek hillside,” a cohesive collection of five units that could be divided into seven. Each unit was unique and connected to the outdoors. Two later alterations, also by Schindler, allowed the units to be subdivided in different ways. This rare example of multi-family housing by Schindler remained in the Bubeshko family, and home to Luby, for sixty-five years. The apartments served as a gathering place for artists; sculptor Gordon Newell created the decorative caps on the garage walls of one of the buildings, and architect Gregory Ain was once a tenant. In the mid-2000s, Luby sold the property to a young family who sensitively restored the buildings“ #SilverLake . . . . #losangeles #homes #cityofangels #chasing_facades #discoverla #architecture #visitcalifornia #homesofinstagram #architecturephotograhy #facadelovers #architecturelovers #laarchitecture #walkinglosangeles #walkingla #Americanarchitecture #homesweethome #architect #midcenturystyle #midcentury #midcenturydesign #modernistarchitecture #modernism #shotoniphone #architecture #socalliving #historichome #rmschindler #moderne #Schindler
