• Roxton • Is demolition looming for these art deco flats? The block of four was built in the late 1930s, and from the outside, appear in their original state, complete with double sash windows. From 1941 the building was owned by Joseph Dalton, who lived in flat 4 and presumably rented out the other flats. The building remained in his ownership until 1987. In 2013, a development application was lodged with Willoughby Council for the demolition of the building. It was proposed to construct a new five storey building with 16 units and approval from the council was granted. The building was then sold in 2016, but the development application appears to have lapsed. So what’s the future for these stylish apartments? There’s no heritage protection in place and Willoughby Council seem comfortable with their demolition. The surrounding development suggests their fate is sealed. #chatswood #willoughbycouncil #northshoresydney #forgottensydney #artdeco #artdecoflats #interwarfunctionalism #functionalistarchitecture #artdecoarchitecture #1930sarchitecture #architecture #architecturephotography #makeheritagematter #sydneyhomes #apartmentliving #shotoncanon #roxton

If you turn left when you get off the Manly ferry and walk up the hill, unless you are terribly distracted, you cannot miss this two tone Art Deco beauty. Built in 1930, it’s a Manly icon, looking over the harbour like a cruise ship about to set off. Note if you get off the ferry and turn right make sure you’ve got your id if you want a Bundy and coke at the Skiffies 🩷 . . .

• ACI House • Glass blocks date back to 1886 when Swiss architect Gustave Falconnier patented his mold-blown hollow brick design. But it wasn’t until the 1930s that use of the glass blocks became popular. They were most commonly used in Art Deco and Streamline Moderne buildings, like the one seen here. This building was designed by the architectural practice of Stephenson and Turner as the head office and showroom for glass manufacturers Australian Consolidated Industries. The building contractor was Concrete Constructions Pty Ltd. Building commenced in 1939 and was completed in 1941. The use of glass in the design is not limited to the ‘Insulux’ glass blocks. The facade is also clad in glass mosaic tiles giving the building its burgundy colour. The top floor is crowned with a cantilevered concrete plate, perforated by circular holes, helping it to stand out from its neighbours. Today, the building has the name Peejays after being owned by Peejays Developments from 1992 to 2023. It was recently sold to the Roman Catholic Church. The building is heritage listed and recorded in the Australian Institute of Architects register of significant buildings. #woolloomooloo #cityofsydney #eastsydney #forgottensydney #acihouse #peejays #artdeco #artdecobuilding #artdecoarchitecture #streamlinemoderne #interwarmodernism #interwarfunctionalism #functionalism #architecture #architecturelovers #architecturephotography #shotoncanon #nswheritage #historicbuilding #glassblocks #mosaictiles #stephensonandturner

• The Great Southern Hotel • The building seen here today is unmistakably interwar, but a hotel existed on this site as far back as 1858. At that time, a two-storey terrace existed on the site and was known as The Farmer’s Home. The licensee was Michael McNamara. William McNamara succeeded Michael in 1882, and rebuilt the hotel as a four-storey building in 1903. William renamed the business The Great Southern Hotel. Shortly after, in 1907, the hotel was leased to Tooheys. The beer brewer purchased the building in 1925. By the 1930s, there was debate over renovating or rebuilding the hotel. Plans were drawn up by architect Virgil Cizzio (1890-1963), and after a tender process, rebuilding of the hotel began in October 1938. The new public bar opened in October 1939, and the remainder of the hotel by December. The Art Deco building was heritage listed in the 1990s and remains as a hotel to this day. #haymarket #cityofsydney #downtownsydney #forgottensydney #artdeco #artdecohotel #artdecoarchitecture #19thcenturyarchitecture #1930sarchitecture #interwarfunctionalism #interwararchitecture #orangebrick #nswheritage #architecturelovers #architecturephotography #shotoncanon #greatsouthernhotel #virgilcizzio

Here are some examples of the Eileen Gray “Lota” sofa for Classicon. Are you’re looking for a unique design sofa, which not only looks the part, but is extremely comfy? This is a perfect piece to snuggle into for films and naps! Originally designed in 1924, Eileen Gray was a design trail blazer. In a world dominated by men, her inspiring and unique designs were certainly distinctive. They’ve stood the test of time and she remains one of the most collectible designers to this day. The last photo is our “Lota” sofa available in store. The grey fabric is in great condition, but if you’ve been inspired by some of the photographs, we can quote for cushion reupholstery. The entire sofa dismantles into manageable pieces too, so you’ll be sure to get it into your home. Another ingenious and pioneering design feature. £1,700 #eileengray #classicon #designicon #iconicfurniture #interwarmodernism #artdecostyle #functionalism #vintagefindsforsale #manchesterfurniture #womandesigner #sustainablefurniture #midcenturymodernfurniture #midcenturyforsale #chorlton #manchester #didsbury #vintagechairsforsale #artdecofurniture #interwarfunctionalism #interiordesign #homedesign #furnituredesign #classicdesign

• Deloraine • Local builder Herbert Leary purchased this land in 1936 and presumably built this block of flats. He transferred the property into joint ownership with his wife, Minnie, in 1938. Then in 1967, it was transferred to another relative, Irene Leary. The entire block was sold in 2021. It was refurbished by developer McDonald Industries before being subdivided into strata title apartments and resold throughout 2023. Despite having no heritage overlay, the property embraces its 1930s character and looks to be in great shape. #drummoyne #cityofcanadabay #forgottensydney #artdeco #artdecoflats #artdecoarchitecture #1930sbuilding #1930sarchitecture #interwarflats #interwarfunctionalism #brickbuilding #sydneyhomes #sydneyapartments #architecturelovers #architecturephotography #shotoncanon #deloraine

• Marijana Court • This block of four flats was built under the ownership of Mr George Allan, likely in the late 1930s. Mr Allan purchased a large allotment from a public auction in 1918 and subdivided it into nine smaller lots. He sold three lots in 1923, then one each in 1925 and 1927. It would appear these flats were already built when this lot was sold to Eva Sender in December 1943. Mr Allan died suddenly the following year at his home just down the road from these flats. He was 59 and survived by his wife and four daughters. Marijana Court was last sold in 1987 and remains as a single title property. All of the interwar character has been retained over the decades, but the property has no heritage overlay at present. #maroubra #randwickcouncil #forgottensydney #artdecoflats #artdecoarchitecture #interwarflats #interwararchitecture #interwarfunctionalism #functionalism #functionalistarchitecture #sydneyhomes #australianhomes #architecturelovers #architecturephotography #marijanacourt #bricklovers #brickbuilding

• Hilltop • A cottage was first built on this site around 1913 after subdivision of the land from a larger block. It was owned by Mary Buchanan, who also lived in the home according to records. The property was sold in 1920 and then again in 1937 when it was bought by James Burns who seemingly had this block of 12 flats built. Council rate books describe the property as flats from 1938. Burns transferred the property into company title in 1954 with the company known as Hilltop Home Units Pty Ltd. The block appears to remain as company title to this day, the less common alternative to strata title apartments. Apart from ‘modern’ garage doors, not much has changed from the original 1930s design. #waverley #waverley2024 #waverleycouncil #forgottensydney #artdeco #artdecoflats #interwarmodernism #interwarfunctionalism #functionalism #interwarflats #sydneyhomes #australianhomes #apartmentliving #1930sarchitecture #hilltop

This obscure looking building is a block of two flats - one upstairs and one down. A cottage named “Rob Roy” was previously on the site, and noted on council records until the mid-1930s. The flats appear to have been constructed in the late 1930s. Ownership was transferred into a company name in 1976 and conversion to strata title took place in 1978. The pair remained owned by the company until 2020 when they were sold together. • St Bernard Hall • A small cottage once stood on this land. It was built around 1903 and had three owners until builder John Hepburn Park purchased the property in 1927. He applied to demolish the home and construct 12 units on the site. Upon completion in 1928, the block was sold to Mrs Ada Bernard who named the building St Bernard Hall. In the decades that followed, Mr Park bought and sold the building a number of times and owned it at the time of his death in 1962. His family inherited the property and retained it until 2000. The style of the flats is thought to have been inspired by American architecture of the 1920s. The face brick facade and crossed joinery window detailing were common at the time. The pillars either side of the entrance have an interesting inset “X” detail. It’s unknown whether an architect was involved or if Mr Park designed the flats himself. He built several blocks in the area and this is considered the best example of his work. The building was heritage listed following a study by Woollahra Council in 2002. #rosebay #woollahracouncil #whatsonwoollahra #forgottensydney #1920sarchitecture #1920sbuilding #interwararchitecture #interwarfunctionalism #brickbuilding #functionalism #stbernardhall #sydneyhomes #australianhomes #nswheritage

• Golden Barley Hotel • Local builders D Wall & Sons purchased several blocks of land from the Llewellyn Estate in 1907 and 1908, including this block on the corner of Llewellyn Street and Edgeware Road. The builders didn’t construct anything on this site, but instead used it as a timber yard. Meanwhile brewery Tooth & Co owned a hotel on the opposite side of Edgeware Road, at the intersection with Camden Street (since demolished). In about 1938, they purchased the timber yard from the Wall family for the purpose of building a new hotel. Architects Joy & Pollitt were commissioned to design the new hotel, drawing up plans in December 1938. It opened in August 1939 as the Golden Barley Hotel, a nod to the key ingredient for making beer. The builder was L Donlan. The building has a round tower accentuating its corner on this wedge-shaped block. The style is described as a blend of the Functionalist and Art Deco styles. There’s no doubt it has that 1930s flair. #enmore #innerwestcouncil #innerwestsydney #forgottensydney #artdeco #artdecobuilding #artdecoarchitecture #functionalism #interwarfunctionalism #functionalistarchitecture #architecturelovers #goldenbarleyhotel #sydneyhistory #sydneypubs #oldpub #joyandpollitt

• Union Hotel • Sydney brewery Tooth & Co purchased the former Union Hotel in May 1911. It was located close by, on the corner of Union and Iredale Streets. In the 1930s, they acquired buildings (possibly terrace houses) to form this more prominent site on the corner of King and Union Streets. The intention was to build a new hotel and transfer the licence from the old one. The new hotel was designed by architects Rudder and Grout, and was completed in 1940. The design of the building is typical of Sydney pubs from the interwar period. This is a more understated example of the functionalist style, although the combination of orange and cream bricks is quite unique. The original Union Hotel appears to remain in existence, but is almost unrecognisable with its verandahs removed. • Taubman House • A larger parcel of land was divided into two smaller allotments in 1937. This half was purchased by the Taubman family, who appear to have built this home after taking out a mortgage in 1938. If the Taubman name makes you think of paint, you’re on the right track. Brothers George and Nathaniel Taubman established their paint manufacturing business in Sydney in 1912. Nathaniel sold his share of the company to George in 1914 and founded the Sterling Varnish Co. with his son Claude. Nathaniel died in 1931, survived by his wife Mary, son Claude and daughter Elsie. The trio were jointly the buyers of this land. The Taubman ownership of the property was relatively short lived, with the family selling in 1944. The spectacular streamline moderne home looks entirely original from the street. While the large P&O style window dominates the facade, there is also a porte cochere on the left side, leading to a garage at the rear of the property. Sadly, there is no heritage protection for the home. #burwoodheights #burwoodcouncil #forgottensydney #streamlinemoderne #oceanlinerstyle #oceanlinerhouse #pandostyle #pandohome #interwarhouse #interwararchitecture #1930shouse #1930sarchitecture #brickhouse #interwarfunctionalism #functionalistarchitecture #functionalism #portecochere #taubmans

No one is in danger of losing their head at this Hampton Court unless they want to paint it grey. Luckily it was identified as heritage significance in 1995 so the axe doesn’t need to sharpened. Designed by Hall and Prentice, I can see some similarities to the big one in Surrey…… like fancy bits and a lot of bricks but unlike that one you can stand and gaze at this for free in a non creepy way of course. . . . . . . . . .

• Edwardton • A large block of land was subdivided into seven allotments and offered for sale by the Perpetual Trustee Company in 1932. The block had been the site of a large house known as Cambridge Villa, the former home of Charles Kidman, who had been granted land in 1856. Michael Halpin purchased lot 1, on the corner of Brook and Kidman Streets in April 1932. He held the land until 1935 when it was sold to Norman Leo Day, who commissioned architects EB Wilshire and HR Hodges to design a building for the site. By the end of 1935, a contract was signed with builder JM Barrie of Kensington to construct the flats. The block of eight was completed in 1936. Esmond Birdsall Wilshire and Harold Reginald Hodges formed an architectural partnership in the early 1930s and undertook several design projects for houses, flats, factories and commercial buildings. They designed Edwardton in the‘Interwar Stripped’ style, though with many elements typical of the Art Deco era. The building was converted to strata title in 1967 and is tightly held, with no sales in over 10 years. - Image 3 from the State Library of New South Wales - images 4-6 from Domain #coogee #randwickcouncil #forgottensydney #interwarflats #interwararchitecture #artdecoflats #artdecoarchitecture #interwarfunctionalism #functionalism #brickbuilding #periodhomes #historicbuildings #edwardton #wilshireandhodges

• Brighton Hall • Historical records show that HE Bulbrook & Sons applied to build eight brick flats on this corner block in October 1937. Initially the application was rejected by council, but a modified application was then approved in November 1937. They were completed in 1938 and by February 1939 the flats were owned by local RF Rattray. The flats are quite unique in their layout, but well suited to the irregular shaped block of land. The corner of the building is emphasised with a striking circular tower. The mix of red and cream bricks adds to the charm. The building is possibly one of the best art deco blocks in Manly, but regrettably, is not heritage listed. • Friend in Hand • A unique hotel, still using the same name it was given more than 150 years ago. The existence of a pub on this site is thought to date back to 1834. The previous building to exist here dates back to at least 1859, according to the oldest council records available. These records describe the building as a two storey brick and slate public house known as Friend in Hand. In 1921, brewery Tooth & Co acquired an interest in the hotel, and later the entire freehold. They purchased additional land on Queen Street and set about condemning the original building which was described as being badly planned and in a poor state. Plans for a new hotel were lodged by Tooth & Co in 1936. The blueprints for the design by architect RM Joy are held by the City of Sydney Archives (images 3 and 4). The builder was SA Bennell. A temporary bar was established during construction and the new hotel was completed in 1937. Tooth & Co held ownership until the 1970s and the heritage listed building was recently owned by the family of former Wallabies front rower Bill Young. Last year it was sold to Momento Hospitality. #glebe #cityofsydney #forgottensydney #friendinhand #friendinhandhotel #artdeco #artdecohotel #artdecobuilding #artdecoarchitecture #1930sarchitecture #interwarfunctionalism #interwararchitecture #creambrick #toothandco #rmjoy

• The Lakes Hotel • Beer brewer Tooth & Co opened The Lakes Hotel in 1938. The company acquired the lease of the Empress of India Hotel on Botany Road, Alexandria and transferred it to this site in order to create the new pub. At the time, Rosebery Park Racecourse was nearby and it’s thought the hotel was established to serve racecourse patrons. Of note, the racecourse was used by the military during the wars and was turned into the suburb of Eastlakes in the 1960s. The Lakes Hotel was designed by one of Tooth & Co’s architects, JG Dalziel. Curved edges and horizontal lines dominate the streamlined functionalist design. This is further enhanced by the contrasting colours of the textured red brick, cream bands and gloss black elements, like the tiles and awning. A major restoration in 2008 returned many of these to their original state. Construction was completed by CE Paynter & Co. The enamel sign was manufactured by Wunderlich Limited. Many prominent local companies from the era were involved with supplying items such as windows, bar fittings and refrigeration. The Lakes Hotel continues to operate as a pub to this day and is heritage listed. #rosebery #baysidecouncil #forgottensydney #artdecoarchitecture #artdecohotel #interwararchitecture #interwarfunctionalism #functionalistarchitecture #australianarchitecture #heritagebuilding #nswheritage #aussiepub #oldpub #thelakeshotel #jgdalziel

• Crossley Court • Most flats from the interwar era were given names, but it seems we rarely know the origin of the name. The owner of the land who commissioned this building was a local real estate agent John Charles Crossley, and he named his building after himself. The land was purchased by Crossley in 1927, and at the time he was a builder. By the 1930s, he had become a real estate agent and operated his own business known as JC Crossley and Co. Crossley commissioned architect C Reynolds Winter for the design of his building. Winter was responsible for many interwar designs in the 1930s, mostly on Sydney’s North Shore. Sadly, many of these have since been demolished or heavily modified. One notable surviving example of his work is the Masonic Hall at Lindfield, on Lindfield Avenue. Crossley called for tenders to build his mixed use block of five shops and 10 flats in August 1934. Soon after, contractors W Gawne and Sons were announced as the builders. Crossley sold the building in 1941 and it changed hands several times in the years that followed, but continued to retain his name. In 1968, it was strata titled. The building has been recommended for heritage listing, but to date, it seems this is yet to happen. This land was subdivided in 1941 as an unused section of yard from a larger estate. It was purchased by local contractor Henry Newman. A building application was lodged with the former Ashfield Council in August 1941 noting Newman as the owner and builder. The formula for the flats is typical of the interwar period - a symmetrical facade with curved corners, and a central staircase with a decorative stained glass window. But the choice of a cream brick with white accents is rather unique. The covered porch is also unusual. But it all works really well together. The flats were transferred to Newman’s widow in 1972 who sold the block in 1976. The building was converted to strata title in 1978. Disappointingly, there’s no heritage status, but being strata title does offer some protection. #summerhill #innerwestsydney #innerwestcouncil #interwarflats #interwarfunctionalism #functionalistarchitecture #artdecoflats #artdecoarchitecture #creambrick #brickbuilding #1940sarchitecture

Remember Coronet Court from earlier this week? This is the block next door which was also owned by Melbourne businessman Max Strickland. This smaller block was built a few years later in 1940. It was designed by Clifford Plant and Roderic Voller to promote the plaster work of the Stucoid Modelling Company. Strickland was the manager of this company. It was thought that Strickland was planning to build a mirror image block of Coronet Court next door, creating a matching pair and a courtyard between the two. • Coronet Court • This story starts with a tragedy, but it has a happy ending. The house that originally occupied this site burnt down in January 1932. The owners sold and Melbourne businessman Max Strickland purchased it to build flats. Strickland wasn’t an architect but designed the flats himself. He saw demand in the growing rental market for Brisbane to have “up-to-date and well-serviced” flats similar to those in the southern states. The three-storey brick building has nine flats and is positioned opposite a large park. The unique design, with its angled bays of windows, was created with the intent of catching the breeze and providing views of the park. The grand central staircase has tall stained glass windows which Strickland co-designed with artist Charles Lancaster. The flats featured in a Courier-Mail news article in November 1933 with the subheading “strength, beauty, and dignity” (image 3 is from the article). The flats were described as “a building with the architectural dignity of a mansion”. It’s also mentioned that four of the nine flats were leased prior to completion. In 1939, Strickland sold the property to Thomas Maloney, who bought it for his daughter Eileen O’Connor. The building remained in the O’Connor family for around 70 years before being strata-titled in order to sell some of the units individually - only 4 have been sold to date. The building has a unique heritage agreement which requires owners to retain the original period features inside the flats. Coronet Court is heritage listed with Brisbane City Council. It’s applauded as a local icon and is really more than just a block of flats - it’s a work of art. #newfarm #brisbanecity #forgottenbrisbane #brisbaneartdeco #beautifulhomes #historichomes #1930sarchitecture #functionalism #functionalistarchitecture #artdeco #artdecoarchitecture #artdecobuilding #artdecoapartment #interwarfunctionalism #interwararchitecture #brickbuilding #coronetcourt #coronetflats

McWhirters: What we see here today is actually a composition of four buildings. The oldest dates back to around 1902, while the newest section was completed in 1931 and saw the creation of this marvellous Art Deco corner entrance. James McWhirter, a Scottish migrant, started his drapery business in 1898 as ‘McWhirter and Son’ in leased premises across the road from this address. The business expanded rapidly. By 1912, McWhirters was a full department store in new premises, purpose built to a design by architects Atkinson and McLay. The firm was floated as a public company in 1920. The business became McWhirters Ltd and James McWhirter was the Managing Director. Expansion continued into the 1920s, with McWhirters acquiring all the Wickham Street allotments from Warner Street to Brunswick Street. James McWhirter died in 1925, but the public company continued. By 1929, they had secured all the titles in the block to complete construction of new buildings to combine with the existing buildings. This created the landmark corner entrance and awnings. The architects of the extension were TR Hall and LB Phillips. The department store was purchased by Myer in 1955, who continued at the site until 1988. The property was redeveloped into McWhirters Marketplace the following year. Then, in 1997, it was altered again to convert the upper levels into apartments. The building was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992. #fortitudevalley #brisbanecity #forgottenbrisbane #brisbaneartdeco #1930sarchitecture #functionalism #functionalistarchitecture #artdeco #artdecoarchitecture #artdecobuilding #interwarfunctionalism #interwararchitecture #brickbuilding #repurposedbuildings #mcwhirters #mcwhirtersmarketplace

Queensland Brewery Company: This spectacular office building was designed by Herbert Stanley MacDonald, a partner at architecture firm Addison and MacDonald. It was designed for the Queensland Brewery Company as their new headquarters, replacing previous premises on Queen Street. Building commenced in 1940 and was completed by 1942. The style of the building was a departure from classical forms of commercial buildings seen in Brisbane in the preceding decades. It introduced the curves and angles of the functionalist movement, along with new building materials, light coloured bricks and glass blocks (which have sadly been replaced by standard glass here). The building has changed hands several times over the years but has always remained as offices. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992. Note the glimpse of the Story Bridge on the right, which was opened around the same time as this building (1940). #fortitudevalley #brisbanecity #forgottenbrisbane #brisbaneartdeco #functionalism #functionalistarchitecture #artdeco #artdecoarchitecture #artdecobuilding #interwarfunctionalism #interwararchitecture #brickbuilding

The Abercrombie Hotel which is about to reopen after being closed since 2014. The hotel was constructed in 1938 following the realignment of Broadway which resulted in the demolition of the the existing hotel on the same site. The new hotel was named the “Australian” and was designed by architects were Copeman, Lemont and Keesing. The Australian was one of five hotels built in the CBD in the Inter-War Functionalist style. The Australian Hotel became one of the most important pubs in the southern end of the Sydney CBD. It was patronised by Fairfax journalists, Carlton United Brewery staff and local rag-trade workers during the 40s, 50s and 60s. Following the closure of the hotel in 2014, the NSW state government gave approval for a 16-storey apartment building and office complex to be constructed above the hotel. The imposing glass tower was designed by architects Foster and Partners. In 2016 the vacant hotel, which had been renamed the “Abercrombie”, was purchased by Solotel which worked with H&E Architects (Barangaroo House, Chiswick) and Michael Delany (Cafe Fredas, Club 77, Piccolo Bar and SHADES) to revamp the bar and nightclub. Following the pandemic pause, the Abercrombie will finally reopen on December 23, more than eight years after it closed. #abercrombiehotel #australianhotelbroadway #broadwaysydney #chippendale #sydney #ilovesydney #lovesydney #pubsofsydney #sydneypubs #interwarfunctionalism #interwarfunctionalist #interwarfunctionalistarchitecture #interwarfunctionalistsydney #copemanlemontandkeesing # #sydneyexplainedchippendale #sydneyexplainedbroadway

Telford Trust Building (1939) 🏢. 📍George St, Sydney. The first portion of the building was constructed in 1939 and consisted of only three floors. This original section was known as Feltex House. The building was designed by Adam, Wright and Apperley for Felt & Textiles of Australia Ltd, and was considered to be unconventional in style. The building was renowned for its sophisticated rooftop garden which was designed by Paul Sorensen for Henri Van De Velde of Feltex, who was an avid gardener. In 1960 Buchanan, Felton and Lovell designed an additional seven storeys in sympathy with the existing structure. During this renovation the building was renamed the’Telford Trust Building’ The Telford Trust Building is a Inter-War Functionalist style office building. It is an elegant example of streamlined Functionalism, with the predominantly horizontal curved façade being broken with strong vertical lines. Other prominent features include a black terrazzo plinth, curved windows and walls, moulded to suit the corner site. I’m also fond of cut and paste. Thank you Canberra House for the info, what a website. This angular beautie is one of 5 houses on Evans Crescent, listed on the ACT Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects Register of Significant Twentieth Century Architecture, for multiple reasons. The group are among the first truly modern examples of the inter-war functionalist style and the only example in Canberra of a coherent group of residences in this style. A slightly dodgy angle as I don’t want to have a conversation with the AFP. Designed by Malcolm Moir, one of Canberra’s leading architects of the middle period of the twentieth century, this 1936 inter-war functionalist house has all the standard bits like ribbon windows and a cantilevered balcony and hood. The RM Williams Building (1932) 🥾. 📍George Street. The iconic Australian bootmaker is celebrating its 90th year since Reginald Murray “RM” began his business in outback South Australia in 1932. The four storey cream brick Inter-War Functionalist style building has been stylistically designed in response to its location on the corner of a laneway. The George Street façade comprises two sections, a curved projecting window bay responding to the corner location and a brick section with a vertical stepped brick fin element. The parapet is decorated with string courses and contrasting red brown brickwork. At some time after 1953 it had a fourth storey sympathetically added to increase floorspace. Around the same time a Penfolds wine restaurant operated from one of the floors. REPOST @sydney_explained . Adereham Hall (1934) 🏢 Location: Elizabeth Bay Rd, Elizabeth Bay Architect: Gordon McKinnon & Sons. Architectural Style: Interwar Functionalist with Art Deco detailing Adereham Hall is a nine-storey, 35 metre high apartment block completed in 1934 which was designed by architects, Gordon McKinnon and Sons. It replaced a grand 19th century Victorian stone mansion named Rockley, whose owner Mrs Boucher was very active in 1920s society’s upper social echelon and known for her haute couture. A magnificent 18 metre high Moreton Bay Fig (Ficus macophylla), possibly part of Alexander Macleay’s original gardens connected with his Elizabeth Bay House still stands in the front garden and is about 130 years old. At the time of completion Adereham Hall ushered in a new wave of living with its luxurious design such as a brass front door bell and brass plaque together with “Adereham Hall” set into a granite plinth, terrazzo entrance, modern Art Deco foyer ceiling, a fireplace and hexagonal arches. The external façade features a geometric Aztec or Mayan 'hieroglyph' and sunbursts at the top of each column and under each of the three top-floor windows and main entrance. It has been nick-named “Gotham City’’, a reference to its neo-Gothic Manhattan 1920 and 30s style and period and “Withering Heights” apparently after the number of gay lads that occupied it according to John Stapleton’s book, “Terror in Australia: Workers’ Paradise Lost”. Evening all. These are three interwar modernist houses by Department of Interior architect Cuthbert Whitley, 1939 at Leichhardt Street and Canberra Avenue, Griffith. Big blocks, old, small houses, fancy neighbourhood….. The last two photos are taken from ‘Canberra Architecture’, Andrew Metcalf, 2003 and show how they looked, very neglected, in the early 2000s. As my photos last week show, they are still in situ and now better kept but surrounded and enclosed by a development that is arguably in sympathy with their design but overpowers them in scale. Better than being demolished I think 😕. #cuthbertwhitley #griffith #canberra #canberraarchitecture #australianarchitecture #interwar #modernism #modernist #modernistarchitecture #interwarfunctionalism #1939 #1930s #30s

So, my IG account is about Midcentury modernist architecture, right? But I made the rules, I’m breaking the rules! One sunny day last week I took this pic of the kick arse Moir House at 43 Melbourne Avenue, Forrest, designed by Malcolm Moir as his own residence in 1935. It is an early example of the inter-war functionalist style. Marion Mahony Griffin, visiting after Walter Burley Griffin’s recent death, apparently said it was the only house in Canberra Walter would have liked. It has remained largely unscathed since ✊. These words have been shamelessly stolen from http://www.canberrahouse.com.au/houses/43-melbourne.html. 😊 #walterburleygriffin #marionmahonygriffin #moirhouse #malcolmmoir #moirandsutherland #1935 #1937 #forrest #canberra #canberraarchitecture #australianarchitecture #1930s #30s #interwarfunctionalism #interwarfunctionalistarchitecture

. Friend in Hand Hotel (1937) Location: Cowper St, Glebe Architect: R. M. Joy Architectural Style: Inter-War Functionalist with Art Deco overtones An earlier and now completely demolished hotel named ‘The Friend in Hand’ had already existed on the site since at least 1858. In 1921, the hotel had been acquired by Tooth & Co, who were competing with Tooheys to become Sydney’s largest brewery. A Tooths & Co. Report dated 3 April, 1935 described the Friend in Hand Hotel as an ‘.. old two storey building of poor appearance….The Hotel contains a small Public Bar with three Parlours.. The building is badly planned. .. There is no Private entrance ...The whole place is obsolete and should have been condemned years ago’ Plans for a new, which involved the acquisition of some adjoining properties, were prepared by architect R.M. Joy, and submitted to Council in 1936. The new Inter-war functionalist style hotel features a cream face brick façade with the ground floor finished in glazed tiles (black to base; yellow to middle with green banding; mustard to top). There are timber and glass doors at regular intervals along the two street elevations. Other prominent features include a ground floor suspended awning, and regularly spaced double hung timber windows which are set within bands of contrasting brickwork. The hotel remained in the ownership of Tooth & Co until 1970. In more recent years, the hotel has become known for its collections of kitsch and memorabilia, which includes costumed mannequins and a model train track running above the bar. #friendinhandhotel #sydneypubs #glebe #glebesydney #interwarfunctionalist #interwarfunctionalism #interwarfunctionalistarchitecture #interwarfunctionalistsydney #artdecoarchitecture #artdecosydney #1930sarchitecture #1930ssydney #interwarmodernism #interwararchitecture #toothandco #toothandcobrewery

. Booth House (1938) Location: Bridge Street, Sydney Architect: Brewster and Manderson Architectural Style: Inter-War Functionalist Booth House is a rare surviving example of an inter-war functionalist office building in the city. It was purpose-designed as offices for the owners Frederick H. Booth & Sons (wool merchants) by the architects Brewster and Manderson. The curved building was specifically designed to provide continuous natural light on three sides, an important consideration for sample rooms in wool merchants offices. The nine-storey building features a horizontal banded brick and glass facade which makes use of its corner block position. The ground level is clad in rusticated sandstone with decorative granite cladding used around the main entrance. The windows of the ground and lower ground floor are highly detailed with copper came glazing. The main components of the façade above the ground floor level include the use of red granite, salmon coloured brickwork (darker on window heads and sills), and steel windows. In the early 1980s many of the offices were converted into residential apartments. The ground floor has also been used as a restaurant. #boothhouse #brewsterandmanderson #interwarfunctionalism #interwarfunctionalist #interwarfunctionalistarchitecture #interwarmodernism #interwarfunctionalistsydney #interwararchitecture #streamlinemoderne #1930sarchitecture #1930ssydney #nswheritageregister #sydneyarchitecture #sydneybuildings #bridgestreet #bridgestreetsydney #sydney #streamlinemodernesydney

. The Hastings Deering Building (1938) Location: Riley St, Woolloomooloo Architect: Samuel Lipson Architectural Style: Inter-war Functionalist The six storey Inter-War Functionalist style commercial building was constructed in response to an an increased demand in vehicle ownership in the Post-Depression economy. It was purpose built by businessman Harold Hastings Deering as a multi-storey car sales and service building where the Sydney Ford dealership would operate. Forward-thinking Harold Hastings Deering wanted a modern corporate headquarters and hired architect Samuel Lipson to design the building. Ford cars came and went by way of banked spiral ramps leading up from the street. This system of ramps was patented world wide in the names of Samuel Lipson and Hastings Deering Limited. The building itself was constructed of reinforced concrete with curved corners and continuous banded glazing to each level. During the second world war the building was taken over by the government and the main show room was fitted out as a machine shop for war production with machinery turning out shell cases and munitions. The car sales business continued to operate until 1970 when it sold to Westfields for a retail development however, the building was soon protected under the Heritage Act after union pressure stopped it from being demolished. In 2013 the building was redeveloped into a small supermarket with retail/medical tenancies above #hastingsdeering #hastingsdeeringbuilding #samuellipson #interwarfunctionalism #interwarfunctionalist #interwarfunctionalistarchitecture #interwarfunctionalistsydney #1930sarchitecture #1930ssydney #interwararchitecture #sydneyarchitecture #woolloomooloo #nswheritage #nswheritageregister #streamlinemodernesydney #streamlinemoderne

The brick façade has decorated brick detail and cement rendered projecting bands with high parapet above with a flat terrace beyond. The brick façade sweeps around the corner with an inset balcony set between flanking blocks and a central octagonal tower to the roof deck above. #interwarfunctionalism #interwarfunctionalistarchitecture #artdeco #artdecoarchitecture #artdecosydney #artdecopub #interwararchitecture #1930sarchitecture #sydneypubs #instagay #gaysydney #erskineville

Wejście do niej widać z lewej strony. #Poland #Warszawa #wieżowiec #hall #westybul #interwar #interwararchitecture #funktionalismus #interwarfunctionalism #interwarmodernisme #czystaforma #myszking1

Day 123/366. The Corp! Ugala building at J. Kuperjanovi 16 in Tartu is a brilliant example of interwar functional architecture in Estonia. Built 1938-39. Architect Arnold Matteus who was also the city architect of Tartu during 1926-35 and 1941-44. . Probably will draw the whole building as well:) . . . . . . #interwarfunctionalism #urbanillustration #urbansketch #architecturelovers #ahouseaday #drawingaday #drawingchallenge #tartu #visittartu #blackandwhitedrawing #cloudysky #urbantrees #fineliner #digitalink #linework #eestiillustraatorid #illustratorsofinstagram #illustragram #buildingart #senseofplace #timeandspace #urbanviews #houseportrait #housesofinstagram #historicalhouse #urbanwalks #procreateart #ugala #illustrationnow #archisketch

Day 122/366 . Hello, 3D house 😁 After two weeks of colourful façade fun its time to do some studies on real houses again:) Architect Olev Siinmaa's functional villa from the 1930s in Pärnu. A (somewhat) quick sketch. Not so quick actually, still took me 1,5 hours 😄 .
