Up the ladder to the roof: I don’t often lead with someone else’s photograph, but the Albert Embankment is full of ghosts. This is WH Smith’s Bridge House, built on the Surrey side of Lambeth Bridge. Of course, it’s long gone, as is the Doulton HQ we looked at on Tuesday. Decca Records, another commercial giant of the interwar years, also had its head office here, and the building survives, stuffed with apartments and wearing a tacky new suit. In the midst of it all still stands the no-nonsense magnificence of the former headquarters of the London Fire Brigade, vacated in 2007 and apparently uncertain what to do with itself. This vast complex combined active operational management with training and staff accommodation. When it opened in 1937, weekly displays were given to the public showing rescues from the ten-storey training tower and other acts of derring-do. Three years later, it was one of the most important and consequential buildings in London. So I’m afraid my photos are a bit scanty today, but there was a brief time when this road was one of London’s most modern. All the buildings (and I’ve omitted Lambeth Bridge House) were built on land originally owned by Doulton. - Albert Embankment SE1 170 years after Albert Embankment was built to create space for Joseph Bazalgette’s world first urban sewer system, it will finally get its first intercepting sewer in 2025 when Tideway opens. South London was still rural Surrey in his day but this is still a raw deal over raw sewage and doesn’t bode well for a timeframe on the Bakerloo Line Extension… Bazalgette’s sewers linked 1100 miles of ceramic pipes to 82 miles of intercepting sewers. These are like churches to sanitation where the first steps of treating sewage occurs and they prevent excess overflows into the Thames. The rest of South London has these intercepting sewers but Albert Embankment is home to the outflow of the River Effra which combines with the Camberwell Storm Overflow and simply cascades straight in the river here. This outflow alone dumps roughly 300,000 tonnes of raw sewage a year in the Thames. Tideway is a 25 kilometre long super sewer that runs under the Thames protecting the city to a population of 35 million. They have factored in that people’s use of wipes and other non flushables is equivalent to the system dealing with two extra people. Albert Embankment will also get three new public gardens of reclaimed land in the river and some beautiful artwork celebrating the Effra and its industrial history. You are encouraged to keep an eye out for lions. If you know the riverside this makes sense.
