I recently completed Cultural Competancy training as part of a Carbon Farming Train-the-Trainer program. The workshop was an opportunity to learn more about Australia's First Nations people. I now have a better understanding of the proper protocols around Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Country and have heard a bit about our shared history and the impacts - which can still be felt today. The session also covered ways to be aware of cultural differences and create safe spaces for all attendees. Learning to be respectful of different cultures is a lifelong journey, because you don't know what you don't know. It's incredibly rewarding though, offering a new window through which to view the world. Thanks to IPS Management Consultants for a thought-provoking and valuable session! Highly recommended.

📅 On this day in 1787 The First Fleet, commanded by Captain Arthur Phillip, set sail from Portsmouth, England. Onboard the 11 ships were a mixture of convicts, marines, seamen & civil officers destined to start new lives in Australia. ⚓ Amongst the transportees were two young Lancastrians, George & Elizabeth Youngson. Aged just 12yrs & 13yrs, the siblings had been sentenced to death at Lancaster Castle for stealing 41/- in silver and 6/9d in copper from a silk warehouse on Moor Lane, Lancaster. The children were saved from the gallows three weeks later, and instead sent to Australia for seven years. Whilst George's fate 'down under' remains something of a mystery, Elizabeth settled down in Australia and has many descendants living there today.💰 📷The picture shows Captain Arthur Phillip 1786, by Francis Wheatley, currently on display in the State Library of New South Wales. #LancasterGuide #LWTT #lancaster #lancashire #portsmouth #australia #firstfleet #localhistory #australianhistory #convicttransportation #awardwinningtours #bluebadgetouristguide #instituteoftouristguiding #britainsbestguides

It’s been a long time coming but finally I have a final draft ready for a final edit - still some way to go but so much closer than I’ve been for a long time! The Ferns began 3 years ago along with some other writing I had on the go but those who know me well know that life got in the way - life meaning work. Several times I tried to get back on track but it was just too hard. This time it’s real though and it feels so good working with my editor. The Ferns is an historical crime fiction - a very different genre for me, historical, so it’s been a lot of reading and learning. #crimefiction #historicalcrime #australiancrimefiction #australianauthor #amwriting #amwritingcrimefiction #editing #australianhistory #australianhistoricalfiction

Holy massive concrete constructions in the middle of nowhere Batman! Mount Paris Dam is quite the site to behold. Originally built for mine water for the Mount Paris Tin Mine, was handed over to TAS Water after the mine closed. The decision was made to remove sections of the dam to allow the river to flow through it as it was considered unstable but a bit of a tourist attraction… it’s pretty cool we reckon! #dam #australianhistory #tasmania #shortwalks #naturephotography #treeferns #mountparisdam @suegminto

Yours truly with a replica of Joe Byrne's armour. This was taken from molds made of the real armour, so until the custodians of the real armour decide to put it on public display, this is a close a we can get to the real deal. Joe was the same height as me, but *much* slimmer. Unfortunately for Joe, the armour was only effective where it covered the body and it was a lucky shot that took him down. This replica is on display in the Benalla Costume and Kelly Museum next to Ned Kelly's green sash. #joebyrne #kellygang #armour #australianhistory #australianbushranging

On this day in 1796, Black Caesar, a former slave turned convict, arrived in Australia with the First Fleet, marking a significant event in the nation's history. Born into slavery in America, Caesar later found himself in the United Kingdom before being transported to Australia as part of the convict settlement. His journey from oppression to freedom took a dramatic turn as he embarked on a new life in the distant colony. Caesar's arrival in Australia symbolizes the complex narratives of slavery, colonialism, and survival that characterized this period. His experiences shed light on the harsh realities faced by many individuals during the early days of European settlement in Australia. Did you know Toowong's St Thomas Anglican Church has a fascinating history that dates back to the 1860s? This grand old building has served the community for over 150 years, and its story reflects the changing face of Toowong itself. The first St Thomas church wasn't the grand brick building we see today. It was actually a timber structure built in 1865. The current church, designed by prominent architect FDG Stanley, was constructed in 1877 in the Gothic Revival style, a popular choice for churches at the time. Interestingly, the decision to build the first St Thomas church was driven by the local residents themselves. They pledged funds to make it happen, showing the strong community spirit that has always been a part of Toowong. Over the years, St Thomas has undergone significant additions. The nave was extended in 1886, and transepts and a chancel were added in 1947. These changes reflect the growing congregation and the evolving needs of the church. Today, St Thomas Anglican Church is a beloved landmark in Toowong. Its heritage listing recognises its architectural significance and its role in the community's history. Intrigued? There's more to discover! Consider visiting the church website or even attending a service to experience this piece of Toowong's history firsthand. You could also become a member of the Toowong & Districts Historical Society! #StThomasAnglicanChurch #ToowongHistory #BrisbaneLivingHeritage #GothicRevivalArchitecture #QueenslandChurches #CommunityChurch #ToowongLife #BrisbaneAnglicans #HeritageBuildings #AustralianHistory

I'm often asked about my inspiration for The Gallows Bird. One of them was this painting, The Outcast by Richard Redgrave RA (1804 - 1888). Date. 1851, in the collection of the Royal Academy of Arts. The young mother in this painting became Helena and her baby became Birdie. There's a scene where Helena's mother begs her husband to relent. But Helena is thrust out, the door closed behind her. Never to be spoken of again. I'll be talking about this and much more at the Auckland Writers Festival on Saturday 18th May. This is a group portrait of the committee of the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum commemorating its Jubilee in the year 1900. The Benevolent Asylum stood as an imposing complex of three-story edifices, accommodating approximately 700 individuals. Established in 1851, it occupied a sprawling ten-acre expanse nestled amidst verdant countryside, eventually encircled by Abbotsford, Elm, Curzon, and Miller Streets in West Melbourne. In my post earlier today, I highlighted the life of Gertrude Mary Zichy-Woinarski MBE (1874–1955), an Australian welfare worker and mother of four, who dedicated her life to service in North and West Melbourne. In the year 1900 at age 26, she was elected a member of the Melbourne Ladies’ Benevolent Society so she would have worked closely with all the people in this photo. In August 1913, she was elected a vice-president of the society. Gertrude received the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) honour in 1954 for her charitable work. Her husband was Victor Zichy-Woinarski physician and surgeon at the asylum and they lived in a house just down the road from the asylum from around 1885 to 1915, where @lumenpeople now operates. 📸 State Library Victoria #northmelbourne #westmelbourne #hotham #australianhistory #melbourne #photography #melbournearchitecture #victorianarchitecture #australianarchitecture #architecture #australia #urbanstreetphotogallery #houses_ofthe_world #streets_storytelling #streets_unseen #capturestreets #checkmelbourne #mbe #oldphoto

Corporal John Bernard Mackey VC (16 May 1922 – 12 May 1945) John Mackey was born and raised in Sydney. After leaving school at age 14, John apprenticed in his father’s bakery but was more passionate about Rugby League and swimming. He overstated his age and enlisted in the AIF on 4 June 1940. He was posted to the 2/3rd Pioneer Battalion (9th Division), serving in Darwin before leaving for the Middle East. He returned to Australia after the battle of El Alamein in Egypt, and embarked for New Guinea in August 1943. During operations around Finschhafen he was promoted acting corporal. He was described as an outstanding leader who showed physical and moral courage. Despite being hospitalised twice for malaria he went on to embark for the invasion of Tarakan Island in Borneo in April 1945. The Allies wanted to secure the island as an airfield for operations against the Borneo mainland. On 12 May 1945 Corporal Mackey was in charge of a section of the 2/3rd during an attack on a strongly fortified feature east of Tarakan town known as “Helen.” He was leading his section along a narrow spur from which the ground fell away sheer on either side, when they came under heavy fire from three positions. Ahead of his men, Mackey charged a light machine-gun position, then a heavy machine-gun post, killing the enemy with grenades. Then dashing back for a submachine-gun, he attacked another light machine-gun position which was firing on his platoon. Within a few yards of the enemy post Mackey was fatally hit by machine-gun fire after killing two more enemy. His exceptional bravery allowed his platoon to reach their objective. John Mackey is buried at Labuan War Cemetery in Borneo. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his brave actions in Borneo. Mackey’s name is commemorated by an individual plaque on the front of the Leichhardt War Memorial in Pioneers Park, Leichhardt. #victoriacross #australiaatwar #PNG #theirspiritliveson #kokodatrackmemorialwalkway #OTD #OnThisDay #kokodatrack #onthisdayinhistory #australia #remember #WWII #australianhistory #kokodatrackmemorial #papuanewguinea #ww2 #warinthepacific #lestweforget

Happy Mother’s Day! Today, my kids and I are treating my wife to breakfast at @lumenpeople . I hope we can secure a table; it has been one of the go-to spots in North Melbourne since its opening in February 2023. Owned and operated by local couple Marichi Clarke and Emma Sheahan, this gem is close to our hearts. @susu_studio curated its aesthetics, while Marichi and Emma did the fit-out. With impressive backgrounds at Seven Seeds, Wide Open Road, St Ali, and Paramount Coffee Project, Marichi and Emma bring a wealth of experience. Their dedication and passion shine through in every dish they serve, every coffee they make and every wine they pour.
This strip on Victoria Street, between Errol and Curzon Streets, in 1895 was home to four residences and a tailor shop. One of the homes belonged to newlyweds Victor and Gertrude Zichy-Woinarski. Victor, a Victorian-born physician and surgeon of Hungarian and Polish descent, worked at the Benevolent Asylum just down the road, while Gertrude, also Victorian-born but of English descent, was a welfare worker involved in the same institution.  The Benevolent Asylum was massive complex of three-story buildings, housing some 700 souls. Gertrude’s contributions were recognised when she became a member and later vice-president of the Melbourne Ladies’ Benevolent Society. She received the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) honour in 1954 for her charitable work. Cassandra Pybus kindly dropped by during her Sydney visit and chatted to us about her newest book, "A Very Secret Trade" and chatted about how she uncovered one of the darkest and most carefully hidden secrets in Australia's colonial history. It is time we all knew the truth. In the nineteenth century, collectors and museum curators in Europe were fascinated by the antipodean colony of Tasmania. They cultivated contacts in the colony who could supply them with exotic specimens, including skeletons of the thylacine and the platypus. But they were not just interested in animals and plants. The belief that the original people of the colony were an utterly unique race and facing possible extinction had the European scientific community scrambling for human exhibits. Many eminent colonial figures were involved in this clandestine trade, among them four colonial governors, several key politicians and even Lady Jane Franklin. Worse still, the men responsible for the care and protection of the few original people who had survived the ravages of disease and the infamous Black Wars were prominent in the trade. The fall of Wewak marked the beginning of the end of the Aitape–Wewak campaign, the last major campaign on mainland New Guinea in World War Two. In 1943, Wewak was the site of the largest Japanese air base on the mainland of New Guinea and it suffered repeated bombing attacks by Australian and US forces that year. In October 1944, the Australian 6th Division began to take over from the Americans stationed at Aitape. Once they were established they began two advances, east along the coast to Wewak, and the other inland across the Torricelli Mountains to the Japanese supply base at Maprik. Both sides suffered heavy casualties. Operations against the Japanese in the Aitape-Wewak would continue until the end of the war in August 1945. Interested in outback history? @holowiliena_station was settled by the Warwick family in 1852, and is still owned by the family today. Current owners Luke and Frances share the stories of Holowiliena with guests joining their popular Holowiliena Station History Tour. Over morning tea on the homestead veranda, guests hear about life on a Flinders Ranges sheep station today, and in years gone by. A short walk offers a glimpse into the past, visiting the original station store, blacksmiths shop, pioneer settler cottage and cellar in the gum creek. Availability is limited as every tour is personally guided by Frances and Luke, when they're not busy on the station! Bookings are essential as groups are kept small, allowing every guest the chance to ask whatever they'd like to know about station life over the last 170 years. The week that was… Mount Torrens Christian School visited the Coach House on Wednesday to see our History Festival exhibition “LIGHT UP & GROW: ILLUMINATING, ELECTRIFYING TALES SHAPING COMMUNITY LIFE” We had lots of fun imagining life without electricity and seeing the demonstrations of power by Mr Trinkle, the Principal. However, by far the most popular display were the vintage bakelite telephones once the children figured out how to use them!! @historyfestival #SAHistoryFestival #SAHistoryFest2024 #Power #SeeSouthAustralia #SouthAustralia #EventsSouthAustralia #SouthAustralianTravel #SouthAustralianHistory #HistoryTrustofSouthAustralia #HeritageSA #SAHistory #FromTheArchives #SAStories #OurStories #History #OurHistory #LoveSouthAustralia #rememberwhen #historybooks #historytalk #adelaideevent #adelaidehistory #australianhistory #historyaustralia #HistoryFestival #MountTorrens #ElectrifyingTales #AdelaideHills #visitadelaidehills #southaussiewithcosi @southaussiewithcosi @keithconlon1 @1234_pimpod @adelaidehillscouncil @melanieselwood @ashton_hurn @jackbattybragg @makemayomatter

In the early 1950s, Qantas Airways needed larger premises for its Sydney terminal and international conference market. After much searching, Qantas executives turned to the Wentworth Hotel as the solution. Recognising an opportunity to redefine luxury travel, Qantas integrated its terminal and offices into the Wentworth. This move not only met operational needs but also elevated the Wentworth Hotel to new heights of sophistication and convenience. The Wentworth story seamlessly transitioned from a historic past to a modern icon, embodying the spirit of the Golden Era, offering travellers a sophisticated haven for rest, recreation, and new experiences. Just had a marvellous young family from Sydney in the shop. “What brings you to Moree?”, I asked. The answer is, of course, that they are on their way to Bourke. “Why Bourke?” That answer should be obvious too; in The Ballad of Abdul Wade, Ryan Butta quotes Henry Lawson’s comment to the effect that to understand Australia, you have to visit Bourke. So off they trot. That is just one tiny example of cascades of influence, how books can change lives and why bookshops matter. In turn I was able to tell them about The Bird in the Herd, cattle driving and TSRs - that people from Sydney are never taught. We also took in The Penguin Book of Spiritual Verse, modern neglect of Persian verse and the Brewarrina fish traps. So, you see, I was altered as well. @wisewordsbookshop #mymoree #moreebookshop #ryanbutta #theballadofabdulwade #australiana #australianhistory #camels #bourke #bourkensw

For this week’s #flashbackfriday we are catching a flick at the Plaza cinema! 🍿 📽️ When the Coliseum picture palace burned to the ground in 1936, Hoyts secured a lease on the Australian Natives’ Association building on Camp Street. Hoyts decked out the 1925 hall with new seats, modern heating, and the latest Western Electric talking picture equipment, opening the 600-seat ‘Plaza’ just three months later. Hoyts’ premier Ballarat cinema the Regent had a devastating fire in 1943, which left only the façade intact. During the rebuild, the Plaza was elevated to Hoyts’ first-run cinema. 🎞️ In 1949, the basement was converted into the 110-seat ‘Little Theatre’, the first home of the Ballarat National Theatre. 🎭 The Little Theatre also hosted Ballarat Film Society screenings in the 1960’s. Hoyts ‘temporarily’ closed the Plaza in 1957, citing a lack of films. It never reopened.   Today the building is occupied by the Department of Justice. The auditorium has apparently been converted into offices and the proscenium only partially survives.   Do you have memories of seeing films at the Plaza? Every Wednesday in May the BMI is hosting a series of Twilight Talks on cinema. Coming up on the 15th May we have artist and filmmaker @erinmccuskey screening her film ‘City of Chaos and Hope’ followed by a talk with Erin. For tickets, click the link in our bio and select BMI Events Calendar. 🔗 Ticket sales support the work we do here at BMI. This image is part of our free photographic exhibition ‘Not the Last Picture Show’ on the history of cinema in Ballarat. Ok so I have kicked off the new stage of my life, which will include lots of travel 🧳, lots of exploring places, people and most of all- stories. I have desperately missed writing so have reinstated the blog that this Instagram is named after- The Baggage Room. I’m not sure what it will morph into but to begin with it will be a collection of stories about travel and about interesting people, mostly lost to history. I am especially interested in women in history and why their stories so often get forgotten. I start off with the story of my great great great grandmother and explore the question- have things really changed for women since 1837. #womenofhistory #australianhistory #irishhistory #sydneyhistory #feminism

Continuing North toward Port Hedland we stopped in at Point Samson and the old historic town of Cossack. Cossack was the original port for pearls in the North West before luggers moved North to Broome in 1886. Cossack was an early hub for gold prospectors in the region and a port for pastoralists in the Pilbara. Following the opening of the Point Samson jetty the town was dissolved by 1910 and abandoned by 1950. We walked around the town which had great information signs telling you about the buildings and there what they were used for. We then headed out to Reader Head Lookout where the views were spectacular looking out over Point Samson and Butcher’s Inlet. When Heading out of Cossack you pass the burial site of Red Dog the Pilbara wanderer where there is a plaque on a rock, it’s a little tricky to find but we went for walk and found the plaque. #austrip #westernaustralia #historictown #cossack #pointsamson #reddog #travelaustralia #exploreaustralia #lapofaustralia #caravanning #caravanningaustralia #lapofoz #travel #explore #carvanlife #karratha #australianhistory

On this day 10 May (1908) Lawrence Tobin, aged 109, died. Mr Tobin lived in three centuries – born 1799 and died 1908. Lawrence was amazingly sprightly and still played football in his 80s. He later said: “I kicked many a goal when I was well over 80, they wouldn’t select me now. I suppose a man must retire from the field, sooner or later.” He put his longevity and good health down to: “Plain living and good batching… fresh air, plenty of work, plenty of rest” and his pipe! Lawrence lived with his son, James, in his last years and is buried in an unmarked grave in Roma Monumental Cemetery, QLD. Sunrise at Cooee Point The glow of the rising sun on the rusty corrugated shed, with the fresh morning sky behind it was mesmerising. Lightroom edits layered in Photoshop with textures to amplify echoes of underlying conflict in this sunny urban landscape. Textures made from photos I took in Tasmania: Wrack, Constructed, Royal, Lino Cut, Royal, Eucalypt, and Peach-Bloom. The council-managed campground at Cooee Point, on the outskirts of Burnie, looks out toward Bass Strait. Once part of Burnie’s industrial waterfront, the abattoir and cattle yards are gone now, leaving flat broken ground where shipping containers and truck loads are parked. A rusted disused railway track curves through the area, and continues west, closely following the coastline. A large industrial shed sits opposite the campground on the other side of track. At sunset, a stampede of quad and trail bikes raised dust clouds over the point, like post-apocalyptic road warriors. Later, in the dark, little penguins squabbled loudly on their way back to their nests. Once they settled, only the sound of waves lapping on rocks - it felt very remote. In the morning, police did the rounds of the camp asking if anyone had noticed the building materials stolen from in front of the shed. This region was part of the VDL Company’s royal grant. The VDL Company began developing a port and industrial centre in 1827. Named Emu Bay (after the Tasmanian subspecies that lived there until extinction in 1865), it was renamed to honour William Burnie, a VDL Company director. Conflict with the Palawa people was so intense that, by 1834, only one sixth of the original inhabitants survived to be taken to Flinders Island1. 1 palawa-places.org.au #tasmania #roadtrip #lonelyplaces #sunrise #darkandlight #australiangothic #australianhistory #australianlandscape #urbanlandscape #fineartphotography #postprocessed #adobelightroom #adobephotoshop #australianartist #australianart #australianphotography

This beautiful home on Arden Street, North Melbourne is named Devon and was built by Scottish builder James Robert Boyne circa 1870.  This was his family home. James was born in Falkirk, Scotland and ventured to Australia in 1854 with his beloved wife, Christina, who he married on 17 June 1848 when he was 24 and she just 18. James became a successful builder in Melbourne, he co-founded the building firm of Little and Boyne. They built Sts Peter & Paul’s Catholic Church in South Melbourne as well as St Marys Church in Caufield.  The laying of foundation stones for both magnificent bluestone churches coincided with the construction of this house. I wonder whether James enlisted the architectural expertise of the same individuals responsible for the churches’ design—namely, Thomas Anthony Kelly or Reed and Barnes.   James and Christina were blessed with a family of at least eight children. However, tragedy struck in 1868 when their 12-year-old son, Alexander, drowned in the Maribyrnong River, known at the time as the Saltwater River. Six years later, James died on 21 August 1874 aged 50. Christina then continued to live in this house until her death in October 1901 at the age of 74. Following James and Christina’s passing, ownership of the house transitioned to their youngest daughter, Janet, who likely came into the world within its walls. Named after her paternal grandmother, Janet Black, born in Falkirk, Scotland, in 1794, she remained a resident of the house until her passing at the age of 86 in January 1950. Janet was deeply esteemed as a cherished member of the North Melbourne Presbyterian Women Missionary Union.   (Source) Trove Sands and McDougall Directories Gravefinder MyHeritage #northmelbourne #westmelbourne #hotham #australianhistory #melbourne #photography #melbournearchitecture #victorianarchitecture #australianarchitecture #architecture #australia #urbanstreetphotogallery #houses_ofthe_world #streets_storytelling #streets_unseen #capturestreets #checkmelbourne #scotland #scottishhomes #falkirk

If Australia is to survive, it ought to cling to the hope of Nations. Australia was once called “Gran Tierra del Sur del Espíritu Santo” or “Great South Land of the Holy Spirit.” Cook was a devout Christian. Australia is part of the Great ‘Anglo-Protestant’ Sphere. It will be hard for Australia to accept Christ, but it must. Australian society is essentially pagan with a Christian veneer, nevertheless, God willing it shall be an island in a sea of wickedness, preserved against the ungodly. A stronghold for those secure in the LORD. Blessed is the Nation whose God is the Lord! 🇦🇺 #australian #australianaesthetic #aussie #australianculture #sunburntcountry #aussieculture #angloaussie #aussiemusic #australianhistory #britishaustralian #aussieaesthetic #oldaustralia
