Instead of winding my way to Sydney for the Sydney Writer's Festival this year I stayed local and headed to the Moree Picnic Races to celebrate a centenary of racing. It was a special day for us as Dad was a past president, life member and twice winner of the coveted Boolooroo Cup with horse Sahara Bounty. My mum, sister and I raised a glass to Dad - I've included a pic of Dad holding the Cup, he was so chuffed that day! Reading this junior version of the Vivian Bullwinkel story made my appreciate both the stoicism of those women, motivated by duty, and that world peace (any sort of peace for that matter) is very hard work and always fragile, like an egg balanced on the sharp end of a pin. Since the 1980s - when the last of the wartime generation left politics - there has been a tendency to confuse local financial prosperity with peace. This story had my mind ranging across Brexit, Gaza, Ukraine, migrant boats and the casual brutality of an assault I recently witnessed. It is a challenging story for a child to read, but the message is so very important. That message is that the gentle, cultured people of modern Japan are descended from the perpetrators of atrocities; in the same way that Germans are. Indeed, there is hardly a country or culture in the modern world that has not been complicit in mass killings. This wonderful customer had just returned from a wedding way out west (I hasten to add that she had a driver), and took the trouble to call in on the way home. She is a doughty soul, endless engaged in good works, and abreast of nineteenth century saying like “hold hard” that nobody else uses today, the sort of woman who knows the difference between a wagonette and a buggy, and in her heyday could probably harness a horse to either. On friday I attended a painting workshop at @yaamaganugallery Moree organised by the gallery's dynamo Toby Osmond in conjunction with Tjarlirli Art WA who held a group show with artists from Tjarlirli and Kaltukatjara. It was a fascinating morning learning about the painting processes and Dreaming stories of these highly talented artists. We were fortunate to not only have the guidance of Tjarlirli Art director, Reuben but also that of Leonie Bennett (pictured holding her dreaming story of the seven sisters.) Trying to think of my own story to paint proved difficult at first but I settled on my current household - the concentric rings representing my mother, me, my brother and sister... For the rest, I broached Topper’s Mountain as soon as my load was unpacked. Mead is a surprise hit from previous events - the sort of drink you don’t think you will like until you have finished the bottle. My good friend Mel has moved from Gravesend into macadamias, and this butter is to kill for. As for Rothwood cherries, I was reared around cherry orchards so they are in my blood - Early Rivers and Waterloo’s. The Deva chocolate, got a workout as well - I hope I can get more in Moree. Frank Sargent Morris, my great uncle, and the cause of my coming to this country. As cheap food from overseas flooded England in the early 1900s he was one of many farmers who came to Australia in search of a better life. It didn’t work - buying land sight unseen is never wise. After war was declared joining the Australian infantry became a means of escape, and income for his young family. He and the army parted company when medical authorities decided he was not quite sane. Surviving family records indicate that he believed the whole war, and the medical authorities, to be completely insane. His son George served with distinction in the second war and only escaped being decorated for valour by having previously incited a mutiny and failed to obey orders.
