Our annual Anzac Day service, held in the Centennial Chapel, was well attended by our community and supported by the Year 12 ākonga. 🤍 Readings and prayers were conducted by Deputy Head Prefect, Carter Rhodes, Head Prefect, Meg Simpson, and Principal of the Preparatory School, Jonathan Bierwirth. Year 13 student Jack Flanagan gave a moving performance singing ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’, accompanied by Year 13 student Sea-am Thompson on the organ. This year the Year 13 address was delivered by our top history student, Liam Hackston. 🌞🌹 Reflecting and Remembering: ANZAC Day at Heritage College A few weeks ago, our NCP and OCP campuses held solemn gatherings under the warm sun to honour ANZAC Day, a day of deep reflection on the brave souls who sacrificed their lives. At NCP, Mr. Schubert’s poignant trumpet rendition of the Last Post echoed through the air, evoking a deep sense of reflection. Our student leaders delivered heartfelt readings, while Ms. Rob and Mr. Charles shared moving tributes, fostering a profound atmosphere of remembrance. At OCP, the day began at 9:00 am with meticulous attention to detail. Our preps wore beautifully crafted poppies, symbolising remembrance and respect. Mrs Bennetts led a thoughtful reflection, and readings by Nikhil and Zac from the Student Leadership Committee, including "In Flanders Fields," prompted moments of contemplation and remembrance. At 11:11 am, the ELC children, alongside secondary students and staff at the Officer campus, gathered for a tribute that included verses of the Australian National Anthem and the Ode of Remembrance, culminating in a wreath-laying below the flagpole. As we remember those who have gone before us, let us recall the words from John 15:13, “Greater love hath no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.” That day, and every day, we hold in our hearts the bravery and sacrifice of our service members. I felt very privileged to give the ANZAC Day address at my old school and where George has commenced his secondary education. There are many students who have parents serving in the military, or connected to former military members, so it really was an honour to be invited and be involved. The school has grown a fair bit since i attended so addressing over 1500 students and staff got the heart pounding and brought back fond memories from my own student days. We’d love to share our babies' memories during the past two weeks. As our current curriculum planning involves outdoor activities, our teachers also set up excellent physical and sensory play outside. Our babies enjoyed touching the hanging scarf and playing peekaboo, and the scarf's colour and texture attracted them. Furthermore, they use unique musical instruments in daily life, such as pans, pots, and stein dishes. These were made of various sounds depending on shapes and materials. Our babies loved making sounds and listening to their music. Their creativity and sensory experience really flourished 😃 For ANZAC Day, a special event, our Kaiako orchestrated a lovely painting activity in which our little ones actively participated. They were part of memorable national events, a testament to our shared history. During mat time, our teacher explained the significance of ANZAC Day to them. Following this, they joyfully and enthusiastically engaged in painting beautiful poppy flowers. It was an excellent opportunity to integrate them into our society, fostering a sense of belonging with the community and their surrounding world ❤ Furthermore, we are putting in a lot of effort to prepare for Mother's Day, a special day for our lovely mums. As a token of appreciation, the children have painted a beautiful vase that will serve as a heartfelt Mother's Day gift. Day #2 shoot at the Anzac Memorial, Hyde Park on April 26th with Peter Milliken and our cinematographer @t_oxford. We filmed Peter visiting a replica headstone of William Allan (Allen) Irwin DCM (Peter’s Great Uncle) which was on display. While there we also filmed Pete at the soil exhibition, which houses soil from different townships in NSW where the soldier’s enlisted in WWI. Connection to soil, land, country is so important for First Nations people and such an integral part of our story. It was interesting to see how the soil from Gomeroi country (e.g., Moree, Coonabarabran, Tamworth) where William spent his time shearing as a young man, contrasted with the soil from Mont Saint-Quentin, France where William would be fatally wounded in August 31st, 1918. On 25 April 1915, the soldiers landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula, in what was then known as Turkey.
