Hoje na História - #jesuitas 11 de maio 1610 - A Companhia de Jesus celebra o 413º ano de falecimento do Pe. Metteo Ricci, SJ (1552-1610) em Pequim. Matemático e missionário, foi o mais eminente missionário na China. A história das missões dos jesuítas na China faz parte da história das relações entre a China e o mundo ocidental. Os esforços missionários e outros trabalhos dos jesuítas, no século XVI, desempenharam um papel significativo na continuidade da transmissão de conhecimento, ciência e cultura entre a China e o Ocidente e influenciaram a cultura cristã na sociedade chinesa. A primeira tentativa dos jesuítas de chegar à China foi feita em 1552 por São Francisco Xavier. Xavier nunca chegou ao continente, morrendo depois de apenas um ano na ilha chinesa de Changchun. Três décadas depois, em 1582, os jesuítas mais uma vez iniciaram o trabalho missionário na China, liderados por várias figuras, incluindo o italiano Matteo Ricci, introduzindo a ciência ocidental, matemática, astronomia e artes visuais à corte imperial chinesa, e realizando importantes atividades interculturais. e diálogo filosófico com estudiosos chineses, particularmente com representantes do confucionismo. Hoje na História - #jesuitas 10 de maio 1569 - *São João de Ávila (1499-1569), Diretor Espiritual e "O Mestre", amigo especial da Companhia de Jesus e de Santo Inácio tornou-se "Jesuíta Honorário". 1848 - O governo Austro-Húngaro decretou a supressão da Companhia de Jesus em todo o seu império. -‐---‐-‐----------‐- *Nascido na região de Castela, na Espanha, João foi enviado aos 14 anos para a Universidade de Salamanca para estudar direito. Mais tarde, mudou-se para Alcala, onde estudou filosofia e teologia antes de sua ordenação como sacerdote diocesano. Após a morte de seus pais, ele distribuiu seu dinheiro para os pobres e no ano de 1527, viajou para Sevilha, na esperança de se tornar missionário no México. O arcebispo daquela cidade o convenceu a ficar e difundir a fé na Andaluzia. Durante nove anos de trabalho lá, ele desenvolveu uma reputação como um pregador envolvente, um diretor espiritual perspicaz e um confessor sábio. Como João não tinha medo de denunciar o vício em altos cargos, foi investigado pela Inquisição, mas foi absolvido em 1533. Mais tarde, trabalhou em Córdoba e depois em Granada, onde organizou a Universidade de Baeza, o primeiro de vários colégios dirigidos por sacerdotes diocesanos que se dedicaram a ensinar e dar direção espiritual aos jovens. João de Ávila era amigo dos santos Francisco Borja, Inácio de Loyola, João de Deus, João da Cruz, Pedro de Alcântara e Teresa de Ávila. Ele trabalhou em estreita colaboração com os membros da Companhia de Jesus e ajudou seu crescimento na Espanha e suas colônias. Os escritos místicos de João foram traduzidos para vários idiomas. Foi o último superior geral antes da Supressão da Companhia de Jesus. Ricci nasceu em Florença , na Itália. Depois do treinamento espiritual preliminar (noviciado em Santo André, Roma), ele fez sua Filosofia (1722–25) e Teologia (1729-34) no Colégio Romano de Roma. Ele deveria ser professor das Ciências Sagradas e especializado em Teologia (1740-42). Além de ensinar, ele também foi o guia espiritual de muitos jovens religiosos no Collegio Romano. On this daily in 1861 John Sullivan SJ was born in Dublin to a Protestant father and a Catholic mother. Raised in the Church of Ireland, he converted at the age of 35 and entered the Society in 1900. Most of his Jesuit career was spent teaching at Clongowes Wood College, but it was his unflagging attention to the poor that brought him the deep regard and affection of all who met him. Deeply pious, his spiritual life was one of inspirational holiness. His beatification, the first ever in Ireland, took place in Dublin on 13 May 2017. “Be always beginning. Let the past go. A network of 168 local agencies based in dioceses throughout the country, Catholic Charities served more than 15 million of our at-risk neighbors last year alone. They serve people without homes, those who are unemployed or underemployed, children who are hungry or malnourished, elderly persons who are isolated, vulnerable migrants and refugees on the move, families recovering from natural disasters, pregnant women and new mothers in need, and persons with disabilities who have inadequate care. All together, the work of Catholic Charities makes up one of the largest networks of humanitarian aid in the nation. Today’s guest is Kerry Robinson, the president and CEO of Catholic Charities USA. If Catholic Charities is in the top tier of American Catholic endeavors, Kerry is in the top tier of American Catholic leaders. She’s dynamic, passionate, faith-filled and extremely smart. And she’s the second-ever woman and second layperson to lead the network. Before joining Catholic Charities, Kerry spent almost two decades working with a group called Leadership Roundtable, which she helped to found in 2005. Leadership Roundtable helps the church develop and implement best management practices to build accountable and transparent leadership culture. Kerry’s entire career has been dedicated to strengthening the church, and her experience and vision helped prepare her to lead this massive network. Comienza la movilidad a Lituania de los alumnos y profesores participantes en el proyecto "Multicultural Jesuit Education" con motivo de la acreditación Erasmus + 2021-27. Sobre las 3pm hemos llegado al aeropuerto de Kaunas donde las familias y profesores del colegio Jesuit School Kaunas nos han dado un caluroso recibimiento. Esta tarde los alumnos han elaborado tradicionales platos típicos lituanos y algunos hasta se han atrevido a probarlos. Mañana continuaremos con las actividades programadas y seguiremos informando. The mobility to Lithuania of students and teachers participating in the project ‘Multicultural Jesuit Education’ on the occasion of the Erasmus + 2021-27 accreditation begins. At around 3pm we arrived at Kaunas airport where we were warmly welcomed by the families and teachers of the Jesuit School Kaunas. This afternoon the students prepared traditional Lithuanian dishes and some of them even dared to try them. Tomorrow we will continue with the programmed activities and we will keep you informed. More than 200 people came together on Thursday, May 2, to celebrate and support the Mission and Ministry of Manresa Jesuit Retreat House at the 2024 Spirit of Manresa Banquet. Held at The Mint at First Michigan Conference Center in Lathrup Village, a new venue for the annual event, the banquet is one of two major fundraising campaigns for the 98-year-old retreat house. Fr. Tim McCabe, SJ, President and CEO of the Pope Francis Center in Detroit, gave the keynote address, Finding God Among the Homeless, offering heart-warming stories of the center's ministry to the inner-city poor and homeless. Welcome to “Pathway to Priesthood”—a limited audio series from the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States in which host Eric Clayton talks with Jesuits who are in the final days of preparing for priestly ordination. Hear Jesuits reflect back on their vocation stories and experience of formation, all while wrestling with some of the biggest questions surrounding priestly ordination. On this episode, we’re asking a basic question: Why even consider religious life? And what actually is it? To reflect on these questions and more, we have two Jesuits: Michael Mohr and Brook Stacey. Michael was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He has a background in teaching, and has spent the last couple of years of his formation studying at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Brook grew up in Toronto, Ontario. Though his undergraduate studies were in geology, he has more recently completed a master’s degree in psychospiritual studies. Both men have had the opportunity to live in a variety of places throughout the formation, and they both come at this question of religious life from very different perspectives. But at the end of the day, they both have found great consolation as members of the Society of Jesus.
