What an awesome quote this was from The Golem and the Jinni. Since Chava (one of the protagonists) is a golem, her very purpose is to fulfill the desires of her master. She has the ability to essentially read others' minds, discern what it is they want, and then do that thing. This poses problems, though, when she senses someone's fears or wishes and acts accordingly, even though the person may not *actually* want what she thinks they do. This resonated deeply with me! For those of us who are empaths, it can be suuuuuper tempting to act according to the vibes that people give off. But sometimes—for whatever reason—there are feelings that people would rather keep to themselves. This is very similar to the lesson Chava had to learn. Again—I love this book! It was magical. Iyar is the second month in the Hebrew calendar (if you're counting from Nisan), and its name is actually an acronym for "Ani Hashem Rofecha" (when you spell it in Hebrew letters), which means "I, G-d, am your healer". So the month of Iyar is a great time for healing—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I don't know about you, but I have been mentally EXHAUSTED lately. The world is a tough place right now. So for me, this coming month is going to be about slowing down and giving my mind the space to heal a little bit. I'm not quite sure what that's going to look like yet, but I think it will include: 1) leaving my phone in a drawer more often 2) going on walks with my daughter to touch leaves & look at flowers 3) squeezing in moments of silence & deep breathing 4) taking a break from the news I'm sure most of my followers here don't follow the Hebrew calendar, but the new moon can be a great time for anyone, Jewish or not, to start fresh. I LOVED THIS BOOK! There are so many fantasy novels based around so many different cultures, but rarely do I see any that center around the Jewish culture. So when I stumbled across The Golem and the Jinni by @weckerh I was really excited, and it did NOT disappoint. Helene Wecker takes elements of Jewish mythology, weaves them together with Arab folklore, and drops everything smack in the middle of New York City. It's part fantasy, part historical fiction, part magical realism—and just wonderful. It's such a beautiful mingling of Yiddish and Middle Eastern vibes. eARC Review: The Sins on Their Bones by Laura R. Samotin 💀 I’m not going to lie, this review is still all over the place for me because I can’t seem to get my head wrapped around it. The beginning was so slow that I honestly couldn’t believe I was progressing through the book, but then the last 40% was amazing?? I’ll try my best to get my jumbled thoughts into understandable gibberish. 😅 The book follows Dimitri, Alexey and Vasily as they navigate a world that’s healing from a civil war caused by estranged husbands. 💍 First the positives. I LOVED the inclusion of Jewish mysticism, especially that of Ashkenazi beliefs. I studied Jewish mysticism via Sephardic Judaism for both a historical and literary research project, and this was just a beautiful mix of fantasy and religious mysticism. I also really enjoyed the relationships in the court of Dimitri. You can really feel the love and devotion they have for another. Another element I enjoyed was the exploration of the healing from toxic relationships that’s explored in this book. I thought it was done quite well. 💔 Now for the parts that didn’t work for me. I think this book oddly suffers from second book syndrome. The plot begins at the end of the war with the characters having numerous flashbacks to help drive both the plot and character development. I personally didn’t think this gave the book and character justice as we’re more told than shown the bonds between all the characters. I also thought this really hinders the plot well into half of the book. Another problem I had is that I think Alexey’s POV could’ve been more secretive since it did feel like he was mostly driving the plot while the other two POVs kind of did nothing. He gave off really creepy grooming vibes for me and his desire to be dominant gave me a lot of red flags moments. 🚩🚩🚩 In general, I think this book would have benefited from starting from a different point in the plot just to really hone in on the supposed love and strife between the characters. But, will I be continuing the series? Yes: I’m invested in the mysticism element and am excited to see where the plot goes, especially after that ending. 😳 (Continue in comments)
In armed conflict, can we keep from dehumanizing the other side? Can we recognize and take responsibility for the suffering of others even as we grieve and seek justice for the suffering on our own side? These are not intellectual exercises. Jews across the United States, in Israel and around the world are wrestling with this issue every day. What I can say is that I see Israelis in dialogue with Palestinians on a daily basis, speaking beyond the slogans chanted on college campuses, as they try, on an individual basis, since their feckless leaders are worse than useless, to reach each other and recognize each other's humanity. I struggle with this because when I see protests that call for violence I go to the place of Never Again. One of the interesting meanings of the Six of Cups, the Tiferet Card today, our card of Compassion, is the possibility of childhood abuse or trauma. So we could see the Five of Wands as the acting out of that trauma. On both sides in this conflict there is an acting out of past trauma that only re-traumatizes everyone. How can we get past this? With Compassion. I often see a lot of stuff about Kabbalah and tarot, but it usually feels like a stretch, like someone who wasn't Jewish tried to associate the two somewhere down the line. This book is much more "Jewish". Krafchow knows his Kabbalah AND he knows his tarot, and it was super interesting to see the parallels he draws and the meaning he maps onto the cards from a Jewish mystical perspective. In fact, it was Krafchow who inspired the character of my protagonist's grandfather. In my cozy mystery series, newly divorced Ava Goldberg opens a tarot cafe, having learned to read the cards from her late Kabbalist grandfather. The High Priestess—the second card in the major arcana—is the card I identify most with in the entire tarot deck. I even have a necklace with her on it! She represents intuition, spirituality, and deep understanding. She reminds us that things are not always as they seem and encourages us to look beyond the superficial. She reminds us to trust ourselves. In the original Rider-Waite tarot deck, the High Priestess holds a Torah scroll on her lap. Only the first four letters of it are visible, and the rest she guards inside the folds of her cloak. The role of the Priestess as a guardian of the sacred word resonates with me as a writer. Although I'm not writing anything like the Torah, I want to always remember that my words, both written and spoken, hold power. The High Priestess is a helpful reminder to weigh my words carefully. It's the first day of the week of Gevurah, never an easy week, in this a very uneasy time. But it is Chesed in Gevurah, which can be seen, in the combination of these cards as illustrating the concept of “Principled struggle” is known in the Jewish tradition as מחלקת לשם שמים, makhloket l’shem shamayim, “a debate/dispute for the sake of heaven.” In such a dispute, all sides see each other as holy, and as seeking the holy, the light, in the dispute. This is the Chesed in Gevurah. And in the Chesed card today, the card with our Squire meditating on his fears, you may notice a detail in the stained glass window: the Latin word Pax, or Peace, is there, though harder to see in some decks because of the choice of colors in the window. Today someone I know called to say he was considering ending our connection because he thinks there is too great a divide in our politics in this fraught moment. Since he hadn't really had a discussion with me about just what my politics and feelings are, I suggested he actually inquire into what I believe and have the difficult discussion. And having that discussion, if he still felt the need to say goodbye, I would understand. But without this discussion, he would miss an opportunity for a discussion starting from a point where both sides, knowing each other's commitment to justice, could really listen to each other. We still may disagree, and he may still feel the need to go. But for me, it's essential to see the humanity of the other side. And to hope there is at core, a dispute that is for the sake of heaven, so that we make bring heaven down to earth. I can't pretend I always feel that way. It's easy to demonize and other others. But this work demands more from me. And all of us. Today is the 5th day of the Omer: Hod in Chesed. Let go into the flow. Hod is, among other things, about surrendering the small cup of the ego into the larger container of Divine benevolence, a flow that is always available to us. In the Eight of Pentacles, our Hod card for today, the surrender is to the work at hand, understanding that even the so-called humble work of making things with one’s hands, requires our full, undivided attention without distraction. Because it’s when we make this work a meditation, the work becomes holy, and for the sake of heaven. It’s engraving the star of the spirit in the gold disk of matter, collapsing duality into an experience of oneness. This can only happen when one has made the mind an ally. When one has done the work of the Four of Swords, watching the flow of thought, the mad monkey mind, until it settles down into a deep silence enabling us to give our complete attention to our work, whatever it may be. I have been struggling with my wild mind these last months, unable to hold equanimity for even a moment. The daily threats to rule of law in the U.S., and the conflict in the Middle East, send my mind in multiple directions and overwhelm me with anger, anxiety, fear and confusion. To quote a musical I love, “sometimes I stand in the middle of the floor, not going left, not going right.” Every day is an attempt to stay focused on how I can be of service. I feel like I haven’t been succeeding very well. Still, every moment is an opportunity to let go and surrender the Divine flow. #EmbodiedKabbalists Rabbi Isaiah ben Avraham HaLevi Horowitz (c. 1565–1630) was born in Prague and lived in Poland and Frankfurt before settling in Eretz Yisrael. He was known as the Shelah Ha-Kadosh, the Holy Shelah, from the acronym of his most famous work, Shnei Luhot HaBrit [The Two Tablets of the Covenant]. Horowitz was brought up learning from many great Torah scholars of his time and excelled in halakhah [Jewish law] and Kabbalah. His major work combines halakhah, homilies, and mysticism with the overarching theme of how to live an ethical life. This was greatly influential after Horowitz’s death and likely inspired many Hasidic teachers who followed. I see the Four of Swords as a card of meditation, of the knight-to-be squire facing his fears, the flow of thought as he undergoes the Night Vigil before his elevation the next morning to knighthood. So when I pair it with one of the Gevurah cards, the Five of Wands, these verses from the Dhamapada come to mind: "Seeking but not finding the house builder, I hurried through the round of many births: Painful is birth ever and again. O house builder, you have been seen; You shall not build the house again. Your rafters have been broken up, Your ridgepole is demolished too.” These are said to be the words of the Buddha when he gained enlightenment and found freedom from rebirth. One of the qualities of Gevurah is Structure, and often people see the figures in the Five of Wands as building a structure—though they may seem somewhat disorganized about it, a negative side of Gevurah. I can see the figures in the Five of Wands as the many competing thoughts, trying to build the house and distract me from this work. And I have lots of distracting thoughts, all taking me away from the task of the remaining 48 days. Each one of these thoughts is like the figure in the foreground of the Five of Swords, a saboteur, waiting to undermine my attempts to harness my mind and make it an ally in this work. It is a warning right on the second day, not like I need it because I am already distracted and desirous of putting my attention elsewhere. Except I recognize the house builder. However, unlike the Buddha, who declared no more houses, which is to say bodies, would be built for him, I’m looking for a nice beach house on Fire Island. And I’m only sort of joking. I have attachments, desires, fantasies, and they can turn me away from my task—houses and bodies. I try to be aware. And when I get distracted, I just keep returning my mind to it focus. One of the qualities of Chesed is Nurturance. The Four of Swords, a Chesed card, captures much of how I feel right now. I need to go inward, and face the very real fears that stoke both compulsive worry, righteous anger (which is an addiction) and compulsive action. Rather than react, I need to just watch the Flow of thought. And when I do react, it's simply a matter of returning to the practice with the Nurturance and Loving-kindness of Chesed. In some ways, this will be my theme for this year—taking time to take care of my wounded soul. Why would the Pope and the Popess, or Priestess, be placed so far apart in the sequence of the Major Arcana? Why would she be numbered 2 while he is numbered 5? A clue may be concealed in the corresponding second and fifth Hebrew letters; namely the Beit and the Hei. Both letters relate to blessing… “Abraham, the first Jewish soul, is subsequently entrusted with the Divine power of blessing, the “big beit” of Creation, as is said: “And you shall be [the one who bestows] blessing.” Afterwards, at the time of his circumcision, he was given the “small hei” of Creation, the power to draw down and manifest the Divine blessing of happiness in the smallest detail of reality. The Priestly Blessing is composed of three verses. The number of words progress in the order 3, 5, 7, with equal differences of two, beit. My dreams were all like this last night. Everywhere I went; ר (Resh). Around every turn; ר. It was as if someone, or something, were working very hard to make sure I didn’t miss the message. So, what is there to gain from this, the 20th letter of the Hebrew Aleph-Bet? The letter Resh, itself, likely derives from the Proto-Sinaitic script, where its shape was inspired by a human head. In Semitic languages, the word for head is “ra’sh,” which underscores this connection. In many areas of Jewish thought, Resh can symbolize poverty and wickedness, particularly because in the ordering of the Hebrew alphabet, it precedes the letter Shin, which represents the divine name Shaddai and thus, divine abundance. This juxtaposition highlights themes of spiritual and moral destitution versus divine richness. In Kabbalah, the area I’m mostly digging around in, Resh is associated with the sefirah of Keter, which represents divine will and the crown. This association imbues Resh with connotations of leadership, high spiritual status, and the intellectual faculties of the head or mind.
