When the Hagans purchased the property, the land was farmed. There weren't many trees on the property, which allowed for a view of the surrounding landscape. Mickey Munchies is a huge fan of painter Georgia O'Keeffe. When we visited NM a couple of years ago, we tried to visit @okeeffemuseum but missed the last entrance into the museum. Thankfully, Frank Lloyd Wright has us covered. Mr. Wright was a visionary who designed over 1,000 structures through the course of his career. He, alongside other gifted artists, came out of the snowy midewest every winter and headed to their commune in the High Desert. They built this with the materials surrounding them, paying attention and respect to nature. "Form and function must be one." Mr. Wright and Ms. O'Keeffe spent time together here, and some of those rare moments are on display at Taliesin West. Mickey Munchies might not have had the opportunity to see her paintings yet, but looking at these photos is like looking into a secret window to the past. Walking into Mr. Wright's office left the exact same way he last stepped in the room, is transformative. I felt the creative energy and the urge to make something beautiful. Plus, those origami chairs are rad and SOUPER comfy, surprisingly! We are so glad we had the opportunity to visit such an incrEDible place. If you have the opportunity to visit, take it. You will not regret it. This living space - yes, I could live in it quite easily. Huge windows, amazing light. Imagine watching storms roll in, or enjoying a huge fire in the fireplace while seeing the snow falling outside. It's inviting and seems like a great spot to sit and read. This living space is a signature Wright open space after coming down a compact and enclosed space you step into this room and feel the expanse of it. So beautiful

For some reason, as I went through the images of the Muirhead Farmhouse, they called out to be black and white. I had to stop myself from making all the images black and white. After all, there is that Taliesin Red color that should be featured as well. The warmth that color adds to the home is palpable. You can SEE it and FEEL it. Maybe it was the light of the day, the shadows of the trees and the shapes that compelled me to use black and white. I shot this as a multi-image pano and it doesn't quite fit the Instagram ratios so it's a bit cut off on the ends.

The Muirhead Farmhouse is one of few Frank Lloyd Wright designs that he did not go back to see after it was completed. The early 1950s when it was built, was a busy time for him. The house Frank Lloyd Wright designed for Herbert and Susan Jacobs set the Usonian type with: Very simple materials Extreme privacy from the street, An L-shaped plan giving living and, Private spaces that focus on a back garden view. Like every Wright design the Usonian houses centered on a fireplace, “the masonry core,” which provided both physical and psychological warmth to his central spaces. Although they were designed on tiny budgets the original Usonian houses can still seem lavish in details when compared with conventional construction today. The critical cost was in the materials. Wright limited his Usonian palette to wood, brick, cement, paper and glass. He wanted to do away with most traditional interior finishes. He specified no plastering and wanted his wooden walls left unpainted. “Wood best preserves itself.” That’s true of brick as well. No one (I HOPE) would propose painting brick on a Usonian house. I finally went to see the Frank Lloyd Wright Muirhead Farmhouse. Never mind that I've lived within 20 miles of this place for half my life. Why I never went, I have no idea. The house is an example of Wright's Usonian architecture. It was designed in 1950 and built from 1951 to 1953. The Muirhead family still owns the house and farm and did a major renovation in 2003. The home is on the National Register of Historic Places.

With the ‘Flowers for Aline’ exhibition in April, Sogestu Ikebana Los Angeles Branch truly transformed Hollyhock House into a “garden house,” as Frank Lloyd Wright conceived it.
