Slide 2: Looking through the archives you see a protest occurred in 1969 and coincidentally, just recently, another protest broke out 54 years later at the same college, City College. The causes were different but the idea was the same, people got together to demand a change. Slide 3: The protests that occurred in April of 1969 involved many factors but it was mainly due to the education access to the students and wanting to have more control over their education. The students found many of the policies unfair so they took matters into their own hands. They used their right to freedom of speech to voice their demands and this resulted in the CUNY project making an everlasting impact. In comparison to the protest that occurred 54 years later, it was in response to the Israel-Palestinian War that broke out October last year, the people are upset at the fact that the US government sends aid to Israel, and after 6 months, the war is still happening. Slide 4: In 1969, the students protested for 5 demands; a separate school of Black and Puerto Rican studies, orientation for Black and Puerto Rican students, a racial composition of entering freshmen to be racially reflective of the high school populations and for all education majors to be required to take classes in Black and Puerto Rican history as well as the Spanish language. Today in Pittsburgh, University of Pittsburgh police clashed with protesters after a group of approximately 15 people attempted to erect a tent on campus grass. Officers forcibly remove those involved and they rejoined a crowd of several hundred who had gathered to march and rally as part of a demonstration planned to coincide with the University commencement. Officers set up a barrier on one side of the campus, but protesters shifted tactics and an hour after their first attempt, a larger group set up several tents in another part of the campus grass. While some locked arms and encircled the tents, several hundred people stood on the surrounding sidewalk, arms linked together, creating a barrier between officers and those on the grass. The city of Pittsburgh police arrived on scene around 6PM and as of 10 PM the situation remains at a standstill. The southern Gazan city has been a last refuge for more than 1.3 million people—more than half of Gaza’s population—in search of relative safety as Israel continues its deadly response following the Hama’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. The crowd marched from Market Square, through downtown Pittsburgh and ended at the City Council Building where speakers spoke of family members in the besieged city, condemned Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman and the United States ongoing military aid to Israel and demanded an immediate ceasefire. Their calls for an end to the siege echo growing international outcry. The death toll in Gaza has surpassed some 35,000 civilians, a disproportionate number of which are women and children. This is all my work for this semester. I focussed more on feeling and did a lot of intuitive work. The first is a protest painting in which I want Puerto Rico to sever its ties and bridges with the United States and become its own thing. It’s not that I want to burn the American flags, but the bridges that connect us on which they are standing. Fire is also intentioned to appear false to show that it is a metaphor for severing connections, not a symbol. The Puerto Rican flags are also meant to look more rendered while the American flags look flat to symbolise my knowledge of each place (i obviously know puerto rico more thats why there’s more demension). The second is the painting of a live figure of a model in oil paints. The third is my first attempt to make an abstract piece (see if you can figure out what i used as inspiration. Hint: it’s an object). The fourth piece is a wall piece that I made with multimedia paper and achiote (which was used by Puerto Rican Taínos to paint their skin). I used auditory sensory marking that demonstrates what I hear from a specific playlist I made of Taíno’s music. A rally was held in Union Square on Tuesday to demand that the Adams administration reverse the 55 million dollar budget cuts that are expected to hit the city’s Parks Department this summer. As a former “parkie,” I was thrilled to shoot this story for @theindypendent’s next issue. These cuts are a disgrace and will destroy many jobs and programming within the parks system. They find a cool spot for their belly in the grass or dust, plop down, and don’t budge. They aren't swayed into capitalism’s urgency to ‘keep busy, keep moving, pretend all is well.' They’re conserving their energy, not melting it away carelessly under this relentless equatorial sun. They’re living examples of Taurus, “I will not be moved.” I’m taking notes. Then there’s the college students protesting on campuses throughout the US and Canada. When the powers-that-be tell them to clear out because they’re demanding "too much" accountability, too much divestment, too much justice— they instead sit down. They say, we’re not going anywhere. Thousands join them in solidarity. They’re showing us Taurus, “I will not be moved”. I’m sitting with these images in the heat this Taurus season, and sitting long on their lessons. Taurus is teaching me to be still, to be like the protesting college students and the other animals – stubborn and unmovable. Taurus is opposite Scorpio in the zodiac, which is all about revelation, transformation, and death. Their polarity is a reminder that eventually, we all come to a full stop. We’ll all be grounded, and the earth will hold us tight, recycling our energy back into the cycle of life itself. The upcoming single " #Disco Chants for #Palestine (Beats To Accompany A #Protest March)” is exactly as the title implies: protest chants in support of #Palestinian liberation set to music. Link in the bio. I put this together for two reasons: First, a mate told me how she always finds the “Free Free Palestine” chant playing on Repeat in her head, but unlike a pop song that you can hunt down and then play and rock out to, protest chants aren’t usually pressed on vinyl or stream-able. It’s not easy to match your inner jukebox to an outer one with a chant. The other reason is that frequently at our London protests, folks show up with these awesome, giant Sound Systems on their bicycles… and they blast really dope beats, but I always find it slightly frustrating that the beats aren’t in sync with the rhythm of the surrounding protesters’ live chants… basically everybody throws each other off rhythmically. This might be a way to get the whole crowd in sync! This first release of “Disco Chants for Palestine” is the awesome Kris Cirkuit remix! Her beat here was originally the basis of an as-yet unreleased remix of our “Every Step You Take Is A Migration” single, but I found it the perfect beat to record chants to. Also provided is the a cappella version… for sound systems and DJs and producers who wish to make “Disco Chants for Palestine” fit their genre of choice. I’d like support for the liberation of Palestine to be on every dance floor on the planet… so make it Grimey, or make it Grindcore, make it Bossa Nova or a Barnyard stomp.
