The Partition of Africa: A Historic Turning Point 🌍 In 1884-1885, European powers met at the Berlin Conference to divide Africa among themselves, setting the borders we see today. Key players like Germany, France, and Britain decided how to claim lands, aiming to avoid conflicts among themselves. Importantly, no African representatives were present. They imposed their rule with minimal settlement, often exploiting local resources and people. King Leopold II of Belgium infamously exploited the Congo, leading to severe human rights abuses. By 1914, nearly all of Africa was under European control, with only Liberia and Ethiopia remaining independent. The borders drawn then still affect Africa today, often fueling conflicts. The struggle for independence began with Ghana in 1957, and by 2000, most African nations had gained their freedom. 1884 is like nothing I’ve seen/experienced before 🎭 A thought-provoking immersive theatre game which forces you to get involved and will leave you questioning ‘whose history is it anyway’? So good 👏🏾 ‘Welcome to Wilhelm Street’. As you enter Shoreditch Town Hall, you are asked to join a table (preferably with people you don’t know). You have a purpose-built model house which you get to furnish as you get acquainted with your new ‘family’; through a range of community bonding tasks. The way 1884 has been written and directed meant that the audience was eased into it and none of it felt awkward despite us being strangers a few minutes before 👌🏾 The niceties soon take a turn as you begin to realise your community and the home you live in is under threat. Increasingly regular radio announcements inform the Wilhelm Street community that change must take place; taking away our rights and freedom to choose how we live! This is where 1884 got really interesting for me. It felt like everyone in the room really embodied the role of innocent citizens but when what we know and loved came under threat, it was clear we were all ready to resist and fight for what is ours ✊🏾 The play is fully dictated by the audience at times which created suspense as we anticipated how things might pan out. The 2nd act of 1884 is really short in comparison to the first act and there is a dramatic change to the environment and atmosphere. At this point the significance of the Berlin Conference in 1884 (an often-overlooked historical turning point for the African continent and the world) becomes a little more apparent. Without any spoilers, it is evident at this point that history can often be adapted and rewritten. There is so much more to 1884; from receiving messages & calls via a mobile phone to table lamps turning red in protest. This is a must see immersive work of art that will have you talking about it all the way home 🙌🏾 This one gets four stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1884 is showing @shoreditchth until Saturday 27th April. It’s currently sold out but do check with the box office for returns. Let’s hope 1884 makes a return very soon!

. I already want to go back and read this again... One of the best non-fiction books I've ever read. Superbly written and accessible whilst providing so much fascinating, appalling and incredible detail it's impossible to not dwell on things long after closing the cover. My ignorance knows no bounds so a lot of this was new to me and it was exactly the book I'd hoped it would be. Dividing the chapters (and countries) into distinct units (Gold and Diamonds, Oil, Chocolate, Modern Slavery) provides a great structure to explore those who found (or fought) their way to the top. What becomes painfully clear on reading this is that the vision, skill and intentions for establishing a newly independent country may all be well and good in theory but the reality is often much different. The scale of corruption, horror and greed is breathtaking. She explained why filmmaking is a sector of society rather than an industry for her, which supports reflection and emotional learning as the most powerful tools of change. 💬 Sara Schurmann discussed with Fee Buck and Cassandre Warnauts at what point wasteful use of resources – both in movie production and in everyday life – is becoming unacceptable on a professional or personal level. 💬 Referring to film production regulations, media stereotypes and habits in society at large, the panel highlighted the challenge to fairly distribute the efforts of climate protection and the need to make sustainability policies an aid instead of a burden. 💬 T. Did you know that the Berlin Conference of 1884 and 1885 wasn’t really that important? The Berlin Conference is often described as the grand event when Europe split Africa between themselves drawing lines on a map creating what today is the modern African continent. Even if there is some truth behind this picture, the importance of the Berlin Conference is highly exaggerated. To be completely fair to history this conference mostly confirmed already known facts when it came to which parts of Africa the different colonial powers had “control over”. In addition to this is it quite generous to claim that the colonial powers had control over the whole area within their borders on the map. At best they had control over the coastal regions where the local leaders were in charge of the contact with the more inland provinces. This also resulted in the inland borders not being upheld because the colonial powers didn’t care and didn’t have the structural ability to do so, which in turn led to life in the new “border regions” being quite unchanged after the Berlin Conference. Today, the African nation of Ethiopia 🇪🇹 (my ancestral country) marks 128 years since its victory over an invading Italian army at the Battle of Adwa on March 1, 1896. This victory marked a significant moment as an African nation thwarted European attempts to enslave the natives, exploit their resources, and cause division. Italy’s piece of the pie was modern-day Ethiopia. However, their colonial lust was stopped dead in its tracks after a well-equipped and trained Ethiopian army annihilated them on the 1st March 1896. In honour of this sacrifice, today we celebrate the 128th anniversary of the historic Battle of Adwa. While the battle started on 29 February, tensions between the Ethiopians and Italians had simmered for years. Since the mid-1880s, the budding European colonial power had established a presence in the then seaside village of Massawa in modern-day Eritrea. Once consolidated along the coast, the Italians began occupying inland territories. By 1890 they declared Eritrea as their own. With nothing to halt their insatiable desire for more African land, repeated violent incursions took the Italians all the way to Ethiopia. In 1894, Ras Mangasha, the ruler of the Tigray region, mobilised his people against the invaders. Unfortunately, his efforts were subdued by Italy’s army. The rapid colonial expansion prompted Menilek II, who had been crowned as Ethiopian Emperor in 1889, to start mobilising the nation in resistance. By September 1895, a formidable force of up to 100,000 troops was assembled. Marching to the tune of purpose and determination, the soldiers began retaking territory but, in general, avoided major confrontations with the invading army. That changed on 29 February 1896 when General Oreste Baraterie, commander of the occupation force and acting on orders from Rome, attacked the Ethiopians. By the afternoon of 1 March, Menelik’s forces had run the tail between the legs of Italy’s army. It was a decisive blow, one that sent Rome’s ambitions retreating back to Eritrea. In honour of this sacrifice, today we celebrate the 128th anniversary of the historic Battle of Adwa. While the battle started on 29 February, tensions between the Ethiopians and Italians had simmered for years. Since the mid-1880s, the budding European colonial power had established a presence in the then seaside village of Massawa in modern-day Eritrea. Once consolidated along the coast, the Italians began occupying inland territories. By 1890 they declared Eritrea as their own. With nothing to halt their insatiable desire for more African land, repeated violent incursions took the Italians all the way to Ethiopia. In 1894, Ras Mangasha, the ruler of the Tigray region, mobilised his people against the invaders. Unfortunately, his efforts were subdued by Italy’s army. The rapid colonial expansion prompted Menilek II, who had been crowned as Ethiopian Emperor in 1889, to start mobilising the nation in resistance. By September 1895, a formidable force of up to 100,000 troops was assembled. Marching to the tune of purpose and determination, the soldiers began retaking territory but, in general, avoided major confrontations with the invading army. That changed on 29 February 1896 when General Oreste Baraterie, commander of the occupation force and acting on orders from Rome, attacked the Ethiopians. By the afternoon of 1 March, Menelik’s forces had run the tail between the legs of Italy’s army. It was a decisive blow, one that sent Rome’s ambitions retreating back to Eritrea. "On 15th November 1884, the Berlin Africa Conference, also known historically as the West Africa Conference or the "Congo Conference," took place at this site. The German Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck, invited the European and overseas powers which held a presence in Africa at that time to take part, including England, France, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, Spain, the Ottoman Empire and the USA. Africa and the African people were present at the Conference only through their opposition to European politics; they were excluded as political subjects: not one African participant was invited." - site notes. The Berlin Congo Conference, met in here in the Reich Chancellery (Wilhelmstrasse 92, formerly 77). The actual building no longer exists. It was badly damaged in the Second World War and then demolished, intentionally without evidence of its 1945 history, in 1949. Hitler occupied the building in 1933-1945. In 1935, he built an air raid shelter under the building's garden annex. Born In blackness by Howard W. French. One leading argument in this book is what almost every well read black person already knows but must be academically argued. Which is…black people/culture/labor/creativity build western countries. Africa and Africans built the New world. First through our resources and then literally through the blood, trauma and sweat of black bodies. And I also think this is why it is important that black people are in certain positions. Not to be cliché or per-formatively woke , but we do bring in a perspective that isn’t evasive of or one that erases blackness. One common narrative in the way the west tells their history is that Africa and Africans hold no weight, that we were an uncivilized society before the white man “discovered” us. That even today, the world moves ahead and we are so far in the past, we can’t catch up. This is an academic text accessible to all. I really enjoyed how he placed Africa back into an important position in history. A good question that the author kept asking was -why would the new world go to such extremities just to human traffic black bodies for such a long time and often at their own loss if there weren’t economical benefits?- Like every fiction book though, it got repetitive at some point. It was also difficult to keep up with the timeline. Also some part felt boring and congested.
