Before using postcards for advertising - trade cards were used by businesses to promote their goods and services beginning in 1870. Publishing houses printed and distributed the cards for well-known businesses including Colgate & Palmolive, Van Houten’s cocoa, cigarette companies and celebrities. These advertising cards were also used for propaganda. Trade cards’ popularity continued after WWI, but declined with the radio broadcasting of commercials in the 1920s which reached mass audiences. It should be noted that Germany no longer printed postcards when WWI started. England and the U.S. printed quality postcards with a white border to save on ink costs. In 1939, postcards with color photos were produced which began the Photochrome era which still continues today. Strawberry Town & Country: Built in 1964 and was one of a few “Town & Country” shopping centers in the Bay Area. For decades, the shopping center hosted a variety of events including a Mardi Gras fundraiser with 50 booths, a visit from Santa Claus, and a Gala Summer art Festival featuring 150 artists. It was remodeled around 2006. Cielo Rancho Motel: This motel opened in 1947 and offered 20 units, a restaurant and the owner’s home. Mr. and Mrs. George Whitmer initially ran the business and later sold it to Mr. and Mrs. Pagano in 1957. Bayview Auto Court and Texaco Service Station: A convenient place to stay back in the day with “modern cottages”, restaurant and a gas station.
