On our trip to Napa this year we became wine club members @hanzellfarm and my favourite wine of theirs is the Chardonnay. To do something fun, I tried the Chardonnay in 3 completely different wine glasses and here are the results! Riedel Sommelier Black Series Chardonnay Glass -On the nose, I got the most oak characteristics -On the palette, the Chardonnay tasted the smoothest in this glass with more tertiary characteristics from the barrel. Gabriel glass Austrian Crystal Wine Glass -Biggest mouth feel with this glass, and a lot more of the fruit and lemon notes. Complex. Spiegleau White Wine Glass -The wine tastes extremely unbalanced. I got a lot of lemon notes with not much else. My favourite glass was @gabriel_glas The 2021 Chardonnay itself is excellent with notes of toasted marshmallow, honey, ripe pear, orange, lemon zest. It's a great easy drinking but smooth and complex Chardonnay. I didn't pair it with anything but in my opinion it would go great with mushroom risotto. In my humble opinion, wine glasses DO make a difference. Not necessarily the different brands, but the different sizes and how they are made, do. The mystery Sauvignon Blanc Collab Winemaker is… Craig McDonald! @omgcraigmc The idea behind this Collab was to make Sauvignon Blanc with a seasoned Winemaker who not only has more harvests than me under his belt, but also many of those vintages with Sauvignon Blanc. Craig has made Sauvignon Blanc at Anthony Vidal Estate in New Zealand and at Creekside with Rob Power. Of course Craig is best known in Ontario as the winemaker behind Trius wines. Craig agreed to this Collab provided he could run the ferment his way — even if it was outside of my usual vinification practices and comfort zone. And that’s what Collab is all about, isn’t it? Craig was able to source 30-year-old vines from Lake Lodge vineyard in the VA of Niagara Lakeshore. Making the wine, 72% of the must was wild ferment (my comfort zone) in stainless with the approach to keep the ferment temperature cool so as to prolong the ferment. This produced a Sauvignon Blanc with layered notes that were grassy, fresh and with a lean profile. The remaining 28% was fermented to Craig’s comfort zone — traditionally in barrel (neutral French oak) with the goal to allow the fermentation to go through with speed, without temperature control and with lees contact post ferment so as to add texture, tropical notes and weight on the midpalate with a touch of spice on the finish from the barrel. Both vessels aged separately for 7 months and were then blended together. A new banger from Guerila in the Vipava valley landed in Lisbon! TABU 2010 is a 14-year-old evolved, yet very alive white wine. A blend of Chardonnay, Rebula, Pinela and Zelen, the wine was aged in barrique for 3 years and 10 years in the bottle. Tabu has a slightly oily texture, with flavours of ripe apple and mango and camomile accompanied by earthiness and hints of oak. The uplifting acidity gives it the perfect balance. Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2022. While preparing a nice turbot with lemon, rosemary, garlic and extra virgin olive oil, I was looking for a nice wine-pairing. So I decided to uncork ( the screwcap) one of my recently acquired bottles from Kumeu Estate New Zealand. As Burgundy wine is getting absurdly expensive even for the generic wines, we are all hunting for more honest alternatives. Kumeu River Chardonnay is drawn from six different vineyard sites in the Kumeu Region. Although it is still different from a Meursault or Puligny, I really appreciated this wine, certainly considering its price! Undoubtedly this wine will be more complex after a few years of bottle aging. I will certainly buy this wine again! Jonas Dostert - Pure Dolomite 2022. 60% Chardonnay-40% Elbling aus Nittel an der Mosel. In der Nase direkt frisch und energetisch mit Zitrone, Boskop Apfel, einer Spur Aprikose, etwas schwarzem Tee und zarter Hefe. Am Gaumen auf jeden Fall auch wieder ordentlich säurebetont, minimal flüchtig, etwas mostig, dazu eine Schüppe Gerbstoff, die etwas Schroffheit in den Wein bringt und sich gut mit kalkig mineralischen und salzigen Noten verbündet. Das vibriert schon fast! Der Wein ist bei 11% leicht und zurückhaltend genug, dass er einem das Gefühl vermittelt, man würde sich gerade in der Mittagssonne sitzend eine Bio-Limonade gönnen und keinen Wein reinzwirbeln.
